Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton Milton's original intention was to have visited Sicily and Greece, but he says, The sad news of civil war coming from England called me back; for I considered it disgraceful that, while my fellow-countrymen were fighting at home for liberty, I should be travelling abroad at ease for intellectual purposes. From Naples he returned' to Rome, where he again spent two months, and arrived once more in Florence towards the end of February 1639. After a short excursion to Lucca, he set out for Venice, crossing the Apennines, and passing through Bologna and Ferrara. His residence in the island-built city was of short duration; there be shipped for England the rare and curious books which he had collected in his travels up and down the Peninsula. His course next lay through the fertile plains and famous towns of Lombardy, over the Pennine Alps, and along Lake Leman to Geneva, where he stayed for a week or two, to enjoy the society of the most learned professor of theology, John Diodati, uncle of his friend Charles, who had just recently died. Resuming his homeward journey, he passed rapidly through France, and landed in England about the beginning of autumn, after an absence of fifteen months. During all his wanderings his conduct had been blameless - worthy of him who thought no man should dare to be a poet whose life was not itself a poem. I take God to witness, he solemnly affirms, that in all those places where so many things are considered law. Ful, I lived sound and untouched from all pro igacy and vice, hav ing this thought perpetually With me, that though I might escape the eyes of men, I certainly could not the eyes of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concordance to the Poetical Works of John Milton The only Concordance to Milton's Poetical Works that has yet appeared is that by the late Mr. Guy Lushington Prendergast of the Madras Civil Service, published at Madras in The edition was small, and it has long been out of print. Unfortunately, too, the editing seems to have been left to the printers, who apparently cut ofi from either end of a quotation such words as would not fit into a line of the Concordance, thus rendering it necessary for one consulting the work to refer in most cases to the passage in Milton; there are also many errors in it owing to the fact that to copyists as well as to compositors English was a foreign language. In 1867 Mr. C. D. Cleveland, of Philadelphia, published in England a small work entitled A Complete Concordance to the Poetical Works of John Milton (london, Sampson Low), but it was merely a verbal index, a first edition of which had appeared in Cleveland's edition of Milton's Poetical Works, published in America in 1854. Previous to this there was Todd's Verbal Index, appended to his edition of Milton's Poetical Works in 1809; but in it, according to Cleveland, there are over three thousand mistakes. In the present Concordance I have followed the text of the new Aldine Edition of Milton's Poetical Works, edited by me this year for Messrs. George Bell 85 Sons, which was carefully revised from my edition of Milton's Poetical Works, published by W. H. Allen 85 Co. In 1877 and 1885.
