Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems by Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë The Bronte sisters published aw, in 1846, a little volume of verse with tire erie - Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. This, however, was only a selection from their manuscripts, and much remained. Charlotte Bronte, in 1850, after the death of her sisters, Emily and Anne, revised their novels, Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey, for a second edition. She included in this edition a few poems selected from the mass of their manuscripts. In the Preface to these volumes, dated September 19, 1850, she tells of the circumstance under which their first volume was published, and in a note to the poetical selections she apologizes for printing the poems which included some of Emily's, written when quite young and says. And after all, its worst struggle and strongest ordeal is yet to come; but it takes comfort, subdues fear, leans on the staff of a moderate expectation, and mutters under its breath, while lifting its eye to that of the public. Book excerpt: Charlotte (1816-1855), Emily (1818-1848) and Anne (1820-1855) were famous nineteenth century poets and novelists, publishing their original work under the pseudonyms, Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Charlotte's novel, 'Jane Eyre' was the first successful novel, followed by Emily's 'Wuthering Heights' and Anne's 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall', all of which are considered to be masterpieces, and classics of English literature. The Bronte sisters, together with their brother, Branwell, were very close during childhood and they displayed their story telling talents at very early ages, inventing imaginary worlds such as that of Gondal and Glass Town and developing complex stories within the settings of these worlds. Their poetic talents shine through their poems which excel in passion, imagination and originality, including poems of love, loss, death, the beauty of nature, and so much more.

In looking over my sister Anne's papers, I find mournful evidence that religious feeling had been to her but too much like what it was to Cowper; I mean, of course, in a far milder form. Without rendering her a prey to those horrors that defy concealment, it subdued her mood and bearing to a perpetual pensiveness; the pillar of a cloud glided constantly before her eyes; she ever waited at the foot of a. secret Sinai, listening in her heart to the voice of a trumpet sounding long and waxing louder. Some, perhaps, would rejoice over these tokens of sincere though sorrowing piety in a deceased relative: I own, to me they seem sad, as if her whole innocent life had been passed under the martyrdom of an unconfessed physical pain: their effect, indeed, would be too distressing, were it not combated by the certain knowledge that in her last moments this tyranny of a too tender conscience was overcome; this pomp of terrors broke up, and, passing away, left her dying hour unclouded. Her belief in God did not then bring to her dread, as of a stem Judge -- but hope, as in a Creator and Saviour: and no faltering hope was it, but a sure and steadfast conviction, on which, in the rude passage from Time to Eternity, she threw the weight of her human weakness, and by which she was enabled to bear what was to be borne, patiently -- serenely -- victoriously....

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters: With Illustrationd From Photographs It has been thought that all the works published under the names of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, were, in reality, the production of one person. This mistake I endeavored to rectify by a few words of disclaimer prefixed to the third edition of "Jane Eyre." These, too, it appears, failed to gain general credence, and now, on the occasion of a reprint of "Wuthering Heights" and "Agnes Grey," I am advised distinctly to state how the case really stands. Indeed, I feel myself that it is time the obscurity attending those two names - Ellis and Acton - was done away. The little mystery, which formerly yielded some harmless pleasure, has lost its interest; circumstances are changed. It becomes, then, my duty to explain briefly the origin and authorship of the books written by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. About five years ago, my two sisters and myself, after a somewhat prolonged period of separation, found ourselves reunited, and at home. Resident in a remote district, where education had made little progress, and where, consequently, there was no inducement to seek social intercourse beyond our own domestic circle, we were wholly dependent on ourselves and each other, on books and study, for the enjoyments and occupations of life. The highest stimulus, as well as the liveliest pleasure we had known from childhood upwards, lay in attempts at literary composition; formerly we used to show each other what we wrote, but of late years this habit of communication and consultation had been discontinued; hence it ensued that we were mutually ignorant of the progress we might respectively have made. One day, in the autumn of 1845, I accidentally lighted on a MS. volume of verse in my sister Emily's handwriting. Of course I was not surprised, knowing that she could and did write verse: I looked it over, and something more than surprise seized me, - a deep conviction that these were not common effusions, nor at all like the poetry women generally write.
