Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Playtime Naturalist The writer of this book has a liking for intelligent English lads, just as some people have for blue china and etchings. He ventures to think the former are even more interesting objects. And, as the writer was once a boy himself, and vividly remembers the never-to-be-forgotten rambles and Observations of the Objects in the country; and, moreover, as he treasures up such reminiscences as the most pleasant and innocent of an active man's life, he thought he could not do better than enlist this younger generation in the same loves and the same pleasures. He has endeavoured to do his best for his human hobbies, and hopes their lives may be richer and sweeter and more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half Hours With a Naturalist: Rambles Near the Shore Now, however, all these minute beings have been proved to belong to the Simplest forms of vegetable life, and the Locomotive Theory had to be abandoned. Among the beings which occupy the border-land be tween the animal and vegetable kingdoms, the sponges have of late years started into prominence. Relegated at first to the vegetable, but now conclusively proved to belong to the animal kingdom, the sponges are full of interest to the student of zoology. With the sponge of commerce we are all familiar enough, and it is scarcely necessary to state that it con Sists of the horny Skeleton alone, the whole of the organic matter having been removed. This organic matter is apparently nothing but a mere wash or film of gelatinous substance covering every filament of the Skeleton but when carefully examined it presents a most remarkable mixture of simplicity and complica tion. Without entering into the purely scientific details Of sponge-structure, I will endeavour to lay open some of the wonders which are hidden in one of the lowest forms of animal life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home of a Naturalist Somewhere in the mysterious space in the roof was stored for some years a collection of stuffed animals, the gifts of well-known naturalists. These creatures were periodically put out on the lawn to air; and a queer sensation they produced there. The domestic animals took flight, all except the dogs, which showed fight at first; but soon learned that the fierce, wild beasts had long since ceased to claw. Unfortunately, the small house, crowded with children and other live dependents, had but sorry accommodation for the stuffed beasts, which in course of time began to look mangy to a degree. At last, some wise person suggested that the collection was decidedly bad for people, and a bonfire was made of it. Armadillo, sloth, tiger, bear, and bison, surmounted by a boa constrictor - whose internal arrangement of arsenical soaped stuffing had been leaking all about the place for months - made a grand pyre, round which the dogs and haims bounced delightedly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Hamilton Gibson: Artist Naturalist Author Hree men have done more than any others to inspire our generation with the love Of nature. They are Henry D. Thoreau, John Burroughs, and William Hamilton Gibson. Thoreau, when the gen eration was young, challenged it to come out of doors, live in a Shanty, and see as much Of the world as he saw. John Burroughs, in later years, has acted as guide to a multitude of minds, eager to be person ally conducted to field and forest. William Hamil ton Gibson, besides winning many feet into those highways and byways whose charms he taught us to feel, was fortunate in his exceptional power to bring nature to the very eyes of men in the works Of his pencil, with which he made luminous - literally illustrated -his pages. This alone would be a justification Of some account of his life and work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
