Book excerpt: Russian novelist and philospher Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is best known for his monumental novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, but his reputation as a master of short fiction is richly evident in this unparalleled anthology. Here, in the largest one-volume collection available, are 36 stories of war, intrigue, treachery, murder, moral turmoil, spiritual anguish, and occasional redemption. They include early stories like the famed "Sevastopol" tales of warfare and "Lost on the Steppe;" the tour de force novellas "The Death of Ivan Ilyitch" and "The Kreutzer Sonata;" as well as folk tales, parables, realistic tales, and many lesser-known gems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Darkness (1886) is a play by Leo Tolstoy. Forbidden for decades in Tolstoy’s native Russia, the five-act play was first staged in Paris, where it earned praise from some of France’s leading critics. Noted for its brutal depiction of violence and desperation, the play is concerned with the universal religious and philosophical themes that inspired such masterpieces as War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Peasant life is often portrayed in art as peaceful and romantic, in touch with the rhythms of the natural world and coursing with spirituality. In The Power of Darkness, Tolstoy refuses such empty symbolism, choosing instead to tell a story of greed, murder, and betrayal that has everything to do with the political reality faced by its impoverished characters. Fearful of what will happen to their farm when her aging husband Peter dies, Anisya seduces her farmhand Nikita, whose lack of education and opportunity—as well as a moral emptiness—make him a willing accomplice. Betraying Marinka, a young orphan girl he manipulates for pleasure, Nikita joins Anisya in dispossessing her stubborn husband. Tragic and disturbing, The Power of Darkness is a story of man at war with nature, and therefore at war with himself. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Leo Tolstoy’s The Power of Darkness is a classic work of Russian literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: "Although Tolstoy's fame rests on his novels, he was also a prolific dramatist; yet this part of his oeuvre has been consistently neglected by scholars and readers alike. Because the plays are satirical, didactic, and colored by complex peasant dialect, earlier translations have been flawed. Now the noted Slavic philologist Marvin Kantor and Tatiana Tulchinsky have prepared the first complete English translations of Tolstoy's plays. These latter pieces provide fascinating insight into Tolstoy's life and his development as a writer"--Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Darkness, Tolstoy's first and greatest play, was not written until he was fifty-eight years of age, and it was not allowed to be performed in Russia till some years later. Both there and elsewhere abroad it was highly successful on the stage, as was also the comedy, Fruits of Culture, which he wrote three years later, to be performed by his own family and their friends. The only other play published during his lifetime, The First Distiller, is a very slight piece of no particular dramatic importance. It was written in the cause of temperance.Besides these, he left three other plays finished, or nearly finished, when he died. The Live Corpse (which in English has also been called The Man who was Dead) is the one best adapted for the stage. The Cause of it All is, like The First Distiller, a short and unimportant piece dealing with the effects of drink. The most interesting, not dramatically but psychologically, of the three is The Light Shines in Darkness, which was left in an unfinished state. In it Tolstoy presents his own case, and deals with the contradiction that existed and has so often been commented on, between practice and theory in his own life and teaching. Odin's Library Classics is dedicated to bringing the world the best of humankind's literature from throughout the ages.
