Book Synopsis The plays and fragments by : Sophocles
Download or read book The plays and fragments written by Sophocles and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1890 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Richard Jebb's seven-volume edition of the works of Sophocles, published between 1883 and 1896, remains a landmark in Greek scholarship. Jebb (1841-1905) was the most distinguished classicist of his generation, a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and University Orator, subsequently Professor of Greek at Glasgow University and finally Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge, and a Member of Parliament for the University. Each volume of the edition contains an introductory essay, a metrical analysis, an indication of the sources used to establish the text, and the ancient summaries ('arguments') of the play. The text itself is given with a parallel English translation, textual collation and explanatory notes, and an appendix consisting of expanded notes on some of the textual issues. The quality of Jebb's work means that his editions are still widely consulted today. This volume contains Philoctetes.

Book Synopsis The Play of Texts and Fragments by : J. Robert C. Cousland
Download or read book The Play of Texts and Fragments written by J. Robert C. Cousland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence, it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies, since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book s thirty-two contributors constitute an international "who s who" of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama, and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come.

Download or read book Greek Tragedies III written by Aeschylus and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology collects some of the most important plays by Ancient Greek tragedians, in updated translations with new introductions. Greek Tragedies, Volume III presents some of the finest and most fundamental works of Western dramatic literature. It draws together plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides from Chicago’s acclaimed nine-volume series, Complete Greek Tragedies. This third edition updates the translations to bring them even closer to the ancient Greek while retaining the vibrancy for which they are famous. New introductions for each play provide essential information about the production histories and the stories themselves. This volume contains Aeschylus’s “The Eumenides,” translated by Richmond Lattimore; Sophocles’s “Philoctetes,” translated by David Grene; Sophocles’s “Oedipus at Colonus,” translated by Robert Fitzgerald; Euripides’s “The Bacchae,” translated by William Arrowsmith; and Euripides’s “Alecestis,” translated by Richmond Lattimore.
