Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Players Blue Book In compiling The Players Blue Book the aim has been to supply a series of photographs and short biographies of those actors and actresses best known at the present time and to furnish in convenient form a souvenir of this age of the drama in America from the view point of those who interpret it. It is not meant to be a critical work, nor a work of reference, though accuracy has been sought after above all else. Information about the people of whom the book tells has been obtained from the people themselves, though in a few cases where this information was found to be too meager, other sources have been questioned. The vain imaginings of press agents have been carefully eliminated, and the attempt has been to present the matter in an attractive form and to say as much as possible in the space alloted to each biography. Of course, in a work of this kind it is well nigh impossible to please every one. Some names may have been omitted which by right should have place, and other names added which, in the opinion of some, should have been left out. It has been the object of the compiler to present those who have by their efforts and talents found place in the front ranks of the profession and to give facts without prejudice. When it has been possible to procure well authenticated anecdotes or bits of life history not exactly bearing upon theatrical experience but of an interesting nature, these have been briefly told, in the belief that dry information is not digestible without a sauce of story. The compiler wishes to thank the members of the profession, managers, and others who have assisted in making the completion of this work possible, and to acknowledge his gratitude especially to those whose portraits and biographies appear herein. Book excerpt: * Instant NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestseller * * GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER for BEST DEBUT and BEST ROMANCE of 2019 * * BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR* for VOGUE, NPR, VANITY FAIR, and more! * What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius—his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through? Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic. "I took this with me wherever I went and stole every second I had to read! Absorbing, hilarious, tender, sexy—this book had everything I crave. I’m jealous of all the readers out there who still get to experience Red, White & Royal Blue for the first time!" - Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners "Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. It is romantic, sexy, witty, and thrilling. I loved every second." - Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones & The Six

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Players, Vol. 2 of 2 At the age of fourteen he was bound an apprentice to a saddler, but his notions of life were of a higher scope, he soon escaped from his trade, and travelled up to Dublin on foot. How he managed to exist there he never told, but the story of the Irish judge comes partly in to ex plain it, and it was as humbly as could well be; all he himself ever acknowledged was, that after being some time in the metropolis, he got settled as a badgeman in Trinity College. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baseball Notes for Coaches and Players I have read "Baseball Notes" by Elmer Berry and have found it to be the most thorough and specific book on the subject I have ever seen. His method of treating every phase of baseball is simple, direct and comprehensive. An especially valuable feature is the ease with which exact knowledge of a particular department may be obtained. For instance, in the chapter on "Battery Strategy" an inexperienced player would find a fund of practical knowledge which would teach him how to take advantage of his own strength and his opponent's weakness. Many articles and books have been written on baseball theory and practice. Mr. Berry has gleaned the best from all of these and added many facts from his own intimate knowledge of the game. I can heartily recommend this work as a most reliable and usable reference book for all who are interested in coaching or playing our national game. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Behind the Scenes: Being the Confessions of a Strolling Player These scenes! How familiar they became by the successive visits of the strollers. In time we learned them as a book. That blue drawing-room - that cut wood - those battleuients the Castle of Elsineur - that street in Verona yes, or anywhere else, -even now they rise before our mind's-eye, phantom-like, and we can realize them still. The fine scenery Of all the great theatres of Europe has failed to blot from our memory the daubs which filled with wonder the playgoers upon whom our strollers conferred the sunshine of their countenance. As the title of the work implies, the book aims also to make the game plain to the spectator who mav not have enjoyed the advantage of close acquaintance afforded the man who has taken an active part in the play on the field. Above all, however, should a perusal of the work give the reader, be he player or spectator, an adequate idea of the spirit in which the game is both played and viewed in its best form, the author will feel adequately rewarded for his labor.
