A Taste of Grace proclaims God's grace as irreconcilably opposed to the core values and beliefs of institutionalized religion and reveals God's grace to be an absurd and foolish sentiment that doesn't add up to the human mind.

Book excerpt: This book is about the human experience concerning God, and how we have taken the Divine and used it for our own ends. From the Great Flood to the Legend of Atlantis, this book looks at the great truths as well as the myths and legends that have shaped our lives. In these pages, we will examine the story of Jesus and Muhammad, the rise of Christianity and Islam, and the forces that have shaped our religions (Both East and West) over the centuries. The book comes in two parts. The first half of the book looks at how we as a civilization got to where we are in both our physical and spiritual development. It gives a brief history of the development of religion and spirituality. The second half allows us to take a long look at ourselves as a people and a civilization. It examines our religious beliefs and the practices of the “priesthood” that have made our world here in the twenty first century the way it is!There now seems to be as many different types of spiritual beliefs and practices as there are groups or tribes in the world, yet in spite of this diversity there is an underlying commonality present in every practitioner of every belief! This common denominator is the overwhelming need to have that belief system in the first place. There are so many types of belief's present in the world today that naturally they cannot all be right. It seems logical that only one of them could be the “True” religion. This by default means that all the rest are wrong. Actually, in the light of day, they are probably all wrong to a greater or lesser degree. However, in spite of this, our common craving for a belief system makes a very convincing argument for a Higher Power. So remember the old saying “If there were no God, man would have to invent one. “ The only real question is how do we separate the fact of a “God” with the myths that have shaped our lives? This book attempts to find some answers.

God-101 presents a fascinating insight into how the original "cult" teachings of Jesus were altered by Greek philosophy, Pagan beliefs and Pauline thought to become the sayings of "The Christ" and the basis of our modern Bible. God-101 gives an analysis of how the "priesthood" has corrupted Christianity and the other major religions. It shows how "Dogma" has led to the polarization of different sects within the same religion, (Catholic/Protestant - Shiite/Sunni) and how religious strife affects society as a whole, including the upcoming world - wide clash between Christianity and Islam! Book excerpt: For many generations modern Christians have sat in church week after week while ministers pound the pulpits telling them what horrible sinners they are. In many cases doctrines have been handed down from parents to children, professor to student, and pastor to assistant, with little or no study of the scriptures on a personal basis. It should come as no surprise that we are missing some important pieces. If you are ready for real growth then you should read the Bible for yourself and find out what it says to you first hand. Reading this book may help you along the way. In this book we will explore provocative truths that you may not have considered before. We will look at topics the average minister will rarely if ever speak of. We will discuss things that the protestant church simply cannot accept in spite of it being right in front of them in black and white and even in red and white. We will also look at a few scientific discoveries that support the word and spark our imaginations. Christ came to set us free from the bondage of the old law and bring salvation, yet many churches today are riddled with legalism, bickering, envy, hate, all the things that contradict what Christ came to promote, that being love and forgiveness. Christ himself said that he came into the world not to condemn it but instead to save it and to give each person eternal life. Plain Truth is a fresh look at some of the most interesting scriptures on the most controversial subjects. I have shared it with the world in an effort to promote the Kingdom of God along with peace and personal growth for those that seek it. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I have enjoyed creating it. It may not be inspirational on every point to every reader, but if it helps each reader discover even one small truth for them, then my mission is accomplished. Author: Todd D. Utley

Book excerpt: The book provides a clear and straightforward presentation of Christian truth for the average Christian believer in understandable, non-ecclesiastical, language. It is intended to help the believer understand the ultimate truth about God and human beings and, with the knowledge of such truth, experience the peace, comfort, and assurance of God's love and purpose. God has made Himself known through the magnificence of the natural world and astounding complexity of life itself. Today we also know that the universe was created in the Big Bang, which requires a Creator who exists outside the universe. Although believers know that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, an indispensable part of God's true nature is his love. This is demonstrated through God's ultimate revelation in Jesus Christ. It is his love of human beings and his desire for a love relationship with us that is his reason for creating us and our purpose for being. But sin entered the world with Adam's disobedience in the Garden of Eden. The true nature of sin is understood as self-centeredness, a misplaced priority of putting our own needs and wants above those of the One who created us. Adam's original sin resulted in a genetic change that has been inherited by all human beings born after Adam, and accounts for the sin nature of self-centeredness that exists within each one of us. It is this original sin which accounts for all the pain and suffering, even from natural disasters and disease. God's act to remedy human sin and restore our relationship with Him is Jesus Christ. The Bible describes our condition and his solution using legal terms such as guilt and punishment, as a debt which we owe to God but cannot repay, and as slavery to our sinful nature. We are unable to do anything ourselves to remedy our condition. Salvation is a gift which God offers us. All we have to do is believe the truth. In the second part of the book, various troublesome topics that confront the Christian believer are discussed in order to bring understanding, comfort, and assurance. God's existence outside of time is presented to correct the misunderstandings of predestination. The truth of God's grace, the free gift He offers through Jesus Christ, is explained, showing that a gift offered must be accepted in order to be complete. The contemporary issue of evolution is shown to be wholly consistent with Christian truth when the established scientific facts and Christian truth are both understood. God's hand, rather than chance, explains the development of new species through genetic changes in DNA, while human beings came into existence through the image of God which He miraculously breathed into Adam and Eve in a second step following the physical and physiological development of the bodies which we inhabit. Insights are provided into the usually avoided topics of Jesus Christ as the only way to God and the seeming mystery of death.

Book excerpt: “If the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?”—1 Corinthians 14:8 THE volume now in the reader’s hands consists of a series of papers, systematically arranged, on the leading truths of Christianity which are “necessary to salvation.” Few, probably, will deny that there are some things in religion about which we may think other people hold very erroneous views, and are, notwithstanding, in no danger of being finally lost. About baptism and the Lord’s Supper,—about the Christian ministry,—about forms of prayer and modes of worship,—about the union of Church and State,—about all these things it is commonly admitted that people may differ widely, and yet be finally saved. No doubt there are always bigots and extreme partisans, who are ready to excommunicate every one who cannot pronounce their Shibboleth on the above-named points. But, speaking generally, to shut out of heaven all who disagree with us about these things, is to take up a position which most thoughtful Christians condemn as unscriptural, narrow; and uncharitable. On the ether hand, there are certain great truths of which some knowledge, by common consent, appears essential to salvation. Such truths are the immortality of the soul,—the sinfulness of human nature, the work of Christ for us as our Redeemer, the work of the Holy Ghost in us,—forgiveness, justification,—conversion,—faith,—repentance,—the marks of a right heart,—Christ’s invitations,—Christ’s intercession, and the like. If truths like these are not absolutely necessary to salvation, it is difficult to understand how any truths whatever can be called necessary. If people may be saved without knowing anything about these truths, it appears to me that we may throw away our Bibles altogether, and proclaim that the Christian religion is of no use. From such a miserable conclusion I hope most people will shrink back with horror. To open out and explain these great necessary truths,—to confirm them by Scripture,—to enforce them by some appeals to the conscience of all who read this volume,—this is the simple object of the series of papers which is now offered to the public. The name which I have selected will prepare the reader to expect no new doctrines in this volume. It is simple, unadulterated, old-fashioned Evangelical theology. It contains nothing but the “Old Paths” in which the Apostolic Christians, the Reformers, the best English Churchmen for the last three hundred years, and the best Evangelical Christians of the present day, have persistently walked. From these “paths.” I see no reason to depart. They are often sneered at and ridiculed, as old-fashioned, effete, worn out, and powerless in the Nineteenth Century. Be it so. “None of these things move me.” I have yet to learn that there is any system of religious teaching, by whatever name it may be called, High, or Broad, or Romish, or Neologian, which produces one quarter of the effect on human nature that is produced by the old, despised system of doctrine which is commonly called Evangelical. I willingly admit the zeal, earnestness, and devotedness of many religious teachers who are not Evangelical. But I firmly maintain that the way of the school to which I belong is the “more excellent way.” The longer I live the more I am convinced that the world needs no new Gospel, as some profess to think. I am thoroughly persuaded that the world needs nothing but a bold, full, unflinching teaching of the “old paths.” The heart of man is the same in every age. The spiritual medicine which it requires is always the same. The same Gospel which was preached by Latimer, and Hooper, and Bradford, ruby Hall, Deviant, Usher, Reynolds, and Hopkins,—by Manton, Brooks, Watson, Charnock, Owen, and Gurnall,—by Romaine, Venn, Grimshaw, Hervey, and Cecil,—this is the gospel which alone will do real good in the present day. The leading doctrines of that gospel are the substance of the papers which compose this volume. They are the doctrines, I firmly believe, of the Bible and the Thirty-nine Articles of the Church of England. They are doctrines which, I find, wear well, and in the faith of them I hope to live and die. I repeat most emphatically that I am not ashamed of what are commonly called “Evangelical principles.” Fiercely and bitterly as those principles are assailed on all sides,—loudly and scornfully as some proclaim that they have done their work and are useless in this day, I see no evidence whatever that they are defective or decayed, and I see no reason for giving them up. No doubt other schools of thought produce great outward effects on mankind, gather large congregations, attain great popularity, and by means of music, ornaments, gestures, postures, and a generally histrionic ceremonial, make a great show of religion. I see it all, and I am not surprised. It is exactly what a study of human nature by the light of the Bible would lead me to expect. But for real inward effects on hearts, and outward effects on lives, I see no teaching so powerful as thorough, genuine Evangelical teaching. Just in proportion as the preachers of other schools borrow Evangelical weapons and Evangelical phraseology I see them obtaining influence. No doubt the good that is done in the world is little, and evil abounds. But I am certain that the teaching which does most good is that of the despised Evangelical school. It is not merely true and good up to a certain point, and then defective and needing additions, as some tell us; it is true and good all round, and needs no addition at all. If those who hold Evangelical views were only more faithful to their own principles, and more bold, and uncompromising, and decided, both in their preaching and their lives, they would soon find, whatever infidels and Romanists may please to say, that they hold the only lever which can shake the world. The readers of the many tracts which God has allowed me to send forth for thirty years, must not expect much that they have not seen before, in “Old Paths.” Experience has taught me, at last, that the peculiar tastes of all classes of society must be consulted, if good is to be done by the press. I am convinced that there are thousands of people in England who are willing to read a volume, but will never look at anything in the form of a tract. It is for them that I now send forth “Old Paths.” Those who read through this book continuously, and without a pause, will, doubtless, observe a certain degree of sameness and similarity in some of the papers. The same thoughts are occasionally repeated, though in a different dress. To account for this, I will ask them to remember that most of the papers were originally written separately, and at long intervals of time, in some cases of as much as twenty years. On calm reflection, I have thought it better to republish them, pretty much as they originally appeared. Few readers of a religious book like this read it all through at once; and the great majority, I suspect, find it enough to read quietly only one or two chapters at a time. I now send forth the volume with a deep sense of its many defects; but with an earnest prayer that it may do some good. J. C. LIVERPOOL. This classic includes the following chapters: Chapter 1. Inspiration Chapter 2. Our Souls! Chapter 3. Few Saved! Chapter 4. Our Hope! Chapter 5. “Alive or Dead?” Chapter 6. Our Sins! Chapter 7. Forgiveness Chapter 8. Justification Chapter 9. The Cross of Christ Chapter 10. The Holy Ghost Chapter 11. Having the Spirit Chapter 12. Conversion Chapter 13. The Heart Chapter 14. Christ’s Invitation Chapter 15. Faith Chapter 16. Book excerpt: If you search the scriptures, you will find in the book of Joshua 24:15, New King James Version, a message that reads, "If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve." Joshua had gathered all the tribes of Israel and reminded them that their forefathers had served other gods and they needed to make a decision about the gods they would serve. Joshua loved his Jewish brothers and sisters and wanted them to realize that they had been given a choice: worship the true living God or worship one of the many false gods of their day. In today's culture, that same choice is before us all. We live in a society where political correctness is out of control. The line that separates right from wrong is beginning to disappear altogether. It seems to me that speaking common-sense truth these days is nearly impossible because many people are so easily offended. Just as Joshua loved his fellow human being enough to tell the truth in his day, that same love flows through me along with a great desire to speak truth in love to all mankind. We all have been given a choice by God to follow him, deny him, or chase after other gods. This book has been designed to inform you of all the choices there are in our world when it comes to religion, worship, doctrine, or even dismissing the idea of a God altogether. But remember this, the death rate for humans is 100 percent. Because of that terrifying reality, I pray the urgency to make your decision on this very important subject becomes your new priority. I believe the plain and simple truth in a dazed and confused world will give you the material you need to make your well-informed decision and settle this for good. Because if you're not living for truth, you're not living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allan W. Janssen has written a fascinating book about religion and the search for God throughout human history. From the earliest burial rituals to the main religions of modern times, he examines what we believe, and how these beliefs were formed. The book is filled with illustrations and wonderful quotes, such as the ending quote from Arthur C. Clarke: "One of my objections to religion is that it prevents the search for God." And that quote pretty well epitomizes what Mr. Janssen has to say about the matter. The message as I perceive it is that when a religion is written down and a priesthood or other system of leaders is established, then that religion can be used for whatever purpose the leadership decides it should be used for, and true believers will not question it, since to do so would be a sin. And when people do not dare to question, that is where the trouble begins. The first part of the book covers the history of human development and how religion began. It includes a very detailed time line that is very helpful in putting everything into perspective. The second part of the book has to do with how religious leaders emerged, and how religion began to be used for ulterior motives by those leaders. One part of this section that I found particularly interesting was the section on Memes, the phrases, images, and ideas that become a part of our culture and our thoughts. How do these memes relate to religion and spirituality? That's explored in The Plain Truth About God in detail.I found this book to be well-researched and filled with intriguing information. I believe that any open-minded person with an interest in human culture and religion will find it useful and enlightening to read. This is not a dry textbook but a vital exploration of human beings and our search for a bigger meaning, and what the results of that search have and can lead to.The Plain Truth About God is a very good overview of religion, and I highly recommend it to all open-minded readers.Georgina StuartMy hope in writing this book is to have people come back to spirituality without the trappings and false beliefs that we have been subjected to by organized religion over the centuries. There now seems to be as many different types of spiritual beliefs and practices as there are groups or tribes in the world, yet in spite of this diversity there is an underlying commonality present in every practitioner of every belief! This common denominator is the overwhelming need to have that belief system in the first place. There are so many types of belief's present in the world today that naturally they cannot all be right.
