Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of Christianity Among the Religions of the World The fourth chapter was prepared at the invitation of the Com mittee of the International Council of Unitarian and other Liberal Religious Thinkers, which held its second meeting at Amsterdam in September, 1903. A few passages in the section on Hindu thought have been expanded, in order to bring out more clearly the contrasts between the fundamental conceptions of religious experience in the Indian and the Hebrew developments. In tracing the barest outlines of the succession of faiths, and endeavouring to estimate their relative spiritual significance, it is inevitable that those who speak from the outside should lay a different emphasis on the same facts compared to those who speak from within. Just as the art, the poetry, the ethical types, of the higher races vary, so also must the specific expressions of faith. The time has not yet come when the East and the West can see eye to eye. But we are daily learning new lessons of sympathy and reverence. To help, however imperfectly, to enforce this teaching, is the purport of the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of the World It has been suggested that a list of books Should be appended for the sake of those who desire to pursue the fascinating study of comparative religion, but though this would be easy it seems unnecessary. The books which would suit one class of readers would be quite unsuitable for another class. It may, indeed, be well to point out here that, just as the best way to become acquainted with Christianity is to read the Bible, so those who would know the religions of the East, at anything like first hand, should read the Sacred Books of the East (clarendon Press), which have been so well translated into English in our day. This, however, would be too serious an undertaking for the average man. Failing this best way, there is no better series to read than that of the non-christian Religious Systems, published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The student of these manuals will find in the foot-notes references to the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paganism and Christianity If any great classical writers of the ancient world, like Seneca or Cicero, could come to life again, nothing surely would astonish them more than the descriptions they might read in our books of the state of the world when they left it, of its moral depravity, and the absence of the religious idea. One would gladly hear what they would say to it all; but, falling that, it only remains to enter as much as possible into their tone of thought, and to present the case between Christianity and Paganism as they might do if they could now speak for themselves, and had at their command eighteen centuries of Church history and all writings of the Fathers and theologians. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Religion in the Study and the Street The present volume of my brother's papers and lectures owes its existence to a belief that those who knew him and valued him as a teacher would not desire that any of his work should remain unpublished or relatively inaccessible. Rightly or wrongly, it was felt that the very lightness of his touch, the irrepressible gaiety of his presentation of things, and the informality of his style were calculated to obtain for him a hearing from some who would turn away from a more solemn treatment as too dull; while others will discern that learning need not be ponderous in order to be profound, and that scintillating scholarship is no impossible contradiction. Moreover there was the impression that even in those matters where there was no pretence to originality, a pronouncement from one who had gained so distinguished a place in the world of scholarship might carry a degree of weight and conviction which would be entirely lacking from an identical pronouncement coming through other channels. This explains not only the publication of these varied papers, but also why they are sent forth just as they stand, without any attempt to dress them up in the accepted garb of literary proprieties. Had my brother lived, he would most certainly have made numerous emendations both in substance and in style, for no one was ever less disposed to regard a question as closed, or more ready to welcome new light. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity, the World-Religion: Lectures Delivered in India and Japan My second purpose was to lodge in the Hindu mind our conviction that Christianity is essen tially a universal religion, divinely adapted to the spiritual needs of each man, whatever his race, rank or nation. The sensitive Hindu, who for long ages has scarcely looked beyond his own beloved Aryavarta, is not easily: °disposed to favor the claim that anything outside of India is mighty enough to take up and include his own land, with its great religious philosophies and its three thousand years of intellectual history. Christianity, although it had lingered since the fourth century on the West Coast in the Syrian Church, and although it had touched Southern India in the apostolic labors of Xavier, appeared to the Hindu mind chiefly as the religion of his English conquerors. Then he came to regard it as the faith belonging in various forms to the Western world of railroads and iron steamers, the world of fire-arms and materialistic science. He saw clearly some of the unlovely aspects of Christendom, and the name Christian had none of the attractiveness for him which it possesses for Europeans and Americans. Flattered by the praises, sometimes indiscriminate, of Western scholars, who unearthed for him his own sacred literature, he began to think that he possessed something already which rendered Christianity, at least for him, unnecessary. Of late years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of Jesus in the Life of Today: A Series of Unconventional Talks on Some Present Day Realities of the Christian Religion Old religions, stranded here and there among the Obliv ious years, are a common sight. Names of divinities that once shook the world have now to be looked up in books Of reference. Clever writers tell us that the reli gion of Jesus is already laboring among the shallows, and will soon be hard aground, never again to move under its own power. We believe, on the contrary, that the Christian faith pulsates with the power and wonder and beauty Of the God of Life, and that the personality of Jesus is - to human experience - the living center Of its glory. All that is sweetest and best in human life still finds its source in Him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Christian's Appreciation of Other Faiths: A Study of the Best in the World's Greatest Religions The discussion in these lectures is not so much from the standpoint of what is commonly called Liberal Religion as in the spirit of appreciativeness. In either case the question arises: Can missions exist under such circumstances? If the spirit Of missions disappears, then appreciativeness and lib eral religion are both wrong and ought to be dis carded. This is not the alternative in the estimation of the one who gave the lectures. A special treat ment is given to this question as a climax to the study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Judaism and Christianity, the Differences We have no objection, however, to Professor Friedrich's definition of judeo-christian as an acknowledgment of Christianity's debt to Judaism and of the profound influ ence of the Hebrew Bible on the New Testament. We, and there is ample reason to assume that the vast ma jority of Christians will second this objection, oppose, however, the use of judeo-christian in the sense Pro fessor Morgenstern employs it, namely to express that the two religions are truly, basically one. For, in point of fact, Judaism and Christianity are lt basically one but are, as Professor Friedrich so aptly states, fundamentally opposed to each other. Professor Herford was therefore right in prognosticating that Judaism and Christianity can never blend without the surrender by the one or the other of its fundamental principles. In view of such authoritative Christian statements, it seems strange that Dr. Morgenstern blithely asserts that we may truthfully call judeo-christianity the religion of tomorrow's better world (judaism's Contribution to post-war Religion, p.
