In the first of the two indices, every name is placed in its proper position according to its spelling. It must not be supposed that on this account I regard the various spellings as denoting various persons. If I had stopped at some particular time, I might have come to some decision on the spelling, and made that spelling uniform through the book. But this I found to be more difficult than I cared to undertake, and especially so since we go on from our earlier notices down to the present day. I have therefore adhered to this rule, that wherever I quoted a document I gave the exact spelling of the name in that document, and I leave to the reader the duty of deciding whether the contemporary varieties of names belong to one or to different individuals. In hardly any case will a difficulty arise. It is vain to regret that my information was not fuller and more perfect. No one would have rejoiced more than the writer had it been so and yet what is here recorded proves that even a little country village has a history which is worth knowing, and therefore worth writing. To avoid such a long list, which must have been sub divided - the sub-divisions have been placed under their respective headings, such as Hospitals - Mineral Waters - Pump Room Churches - Societies - Schools. Possibly in other cases the rules have not been for some reason exactly kept, the index should there fore always be closely consulted. Cross references have been avoided, these being left for the index. When the place of imprint is not given, - London must be under stood. This plan prevents a constant repetition and brings out more clearly one object, - the work of the local or provincial press. Whilst a few small things seen have been omitted as unworthy, others which would seem to have been published have not been met with, perhaps they disappeared and have left no mark behind. That the production of these volumes has been a labour of love without hope of reward, rather with a certainty the other way, cannot be urged as an excuse for any shortcomings. That such a work cannot be perfect or absolutely without omissions must be clear to all. It is hoped, however, that after being so long desired, it may fairly fill a place in our local literature and be some advance towards a clear and distinct knowledge of our county history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Borough of Bridgewater in the County of Somerset This book is an attempt to set forth some of the incidents of the past history of a town whose antiquity is great, and whose story has been singularly varied. From the early part of the thirteenth century up to the close of the seventeenth the place throbbed with energy; they were five centuries whose characteristic, here, was action. It is with this period, in the main, that the following pages are concerned. From the dawn of the eighteenth century, and onwards, a quieter mood crept over Bridgwater. To chronicle this later period would require a separate volume, and entirely different treatment. It is therefore excluded from the scope of the book. Perhaps another hand may some day take up the task. The difficulty has lain chiefly in selecting from the abundance of documentary and other evidence which has been available. A vast number of notes, carefully prepared, have had to be omitted by reason of the need of keeping the book within the due limit of size. A possible objection might be taken to the title, for although the town is always spoken of as the Ancient Borough, it was created a county by Henry VIII when he raised Henry Daubeney to the earldom of Bridgwater. He is much obliged to the subscribers who did not desert the Society, and confined themselves to enquiries after its welfare. Nearly the whole of the material of the volume for the current year has been transcribed and transmitted to the Editor, and it will be put in hand at once. The number of subscribers is three less than last year. Under the present circumstances perhaps a larger shrinkage might have been expected, but it follows after heavy losses in the last two lists. A report for 1900 may not omit to mention the death of Mr. John Batten, F. S. A., one of the promoters of the Society, whose knowledge of the records and history of the County was unrivalled. Mr. E. D. Bourdillon has also passed away, another original subscriber. The financial statement presented with the Report does not represent the real state of affairs, as the large balance has to provide for the cost of Volumes XIII and XIV, and, to a certain extent, for that of Volume XV as well. From the nature of the profession in which he appears. He has brought forward some curious particulars, which in a few years more, for want of being recorded, would be irrecoverably lost. His work will hold up many instances of exertion, directed to the benefit of the town, as domestic examples, to awaken a spirit of emulation. And it will display before the reader a scene which must instruct andafect every one, who has any idea what liberty, civil or religious, means; liberty, that best birthright of Englishmen, and, next to Christianity, the most precious gift of heaven. It has given him pleasure to hold up to remembrance the names of those gentlemen, who have, in any respect, rendered public services to the Town of ta'unton. This he, will be hold to say, hehas done, with candour and impartiality. It is scarcely necessary, he would hope, to caution the reader against considering such a tribute of praise, paid where the author conceived it was merited, as pledging himself to any character; though it is a point of virtue with him to do justice to all. He cannot conclude this preliminary address without testifying the lively sense he has of the honour done him, by the ready and free patronage and numerous subscriptions, with which this work has been encouraged; for which he returns his sincere and cordial thanks. The gentlemen, whose obliging communications he has noticed in the proper places, are requested to accept his grateful acknowledgments amongst them the Rev.
