Book excerpt: When a young woman walking in a strange forest falls into a deep pit, she must draw upon her childhood stories and a curious dream for strength and direction. Since she was a girl, Sara had been told amazing stories by her mother about heaven, Earth, and the rainbow bridge. This bridge is the actual connector between heaven and Earth that animals must cross to enter heaven. Each morning, her mother brushes her hair, sparks her imagination with a new part of the story, and then ties back her hair with a pink silk ribbon. Sara develops the habit of removing the ribbon and tying it on animals she finds who have passed away in the woods, fields, and beach near her home. She says to the animal, "I send you with some of my love to protect you, help you see clearly, and find your way home to the rainbow bridge." Now, Sara lies at the bottom of a muddy hole, crying for help. All of those animals are in heaven with Sara's father, listening to her hopeless desperation. They are crowded onto the bridge, looking over the edge, and they will do anything to help her. They tie together all of their ribbons to create a rope, lower it from heaven to Earth, and lift her out of the pit to safety. This is a story of how Sara's simple acts of kindness find their way back to her.

Book excerpt: The Pink Ribbon Recovery Program is designed to facilitate recovery from breast cancer surgery. These surgeries include lumpectomy, mastectomy, and breast cancer reconstructive surgeries; including TRAM flap, LAT flap, and implant reconstruction. This program also reduces the risk of lymphedema. There are four phases to The Pink Ribbon Recovery Program. Each phase should be maintained for two weeks. The progression from one phase to the next will depend on how you are feeling. You can participate in these exercises two to three times per week. Once you have completed this program, you are now ready to join in many types of mainstream activities. Please be aware of any ongoing limitation you may have due to your surgeries. PHASE I can begin as soon as possible following surgery. Movement promotes blood flow which will increase oxygen supply. This helps to aid in the healing process. PHASE II focuses on improving trunk rotation and lateral flexion (side bending movement). Spine and core stability exercises are added in this phase and we continue with shoulder range of motion exercises. PHASE III adds more strengthening exercises for the core and we begin to incorporate lower body strength and stability exercises. Phase IV introduces the use of resistance to the workout. A Dynaband is used to strengthen the muscles of the back, shoulder, and trunk. Talk to your doctor or healthcare team member before starting this or any exercise program. The Pink Ribbon Recovery Program works in conjunction with your doctor's recommendations for an exercise program. You may also use this program in conjunction with, or as a follow-up to any prescribed physical therapy.

Book excerpt: An unforgettable collection of fairy tales for grownups—from the Booker Prize-winning author of Possession. • “A delight.... provoking and alarming, richly yet tautly rendered.... [She] has the sheer narrative skill to raise the hairs on the back of your neck and make your pulse race.” —The New York Times Book Review Like Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, Isak Dinesen and Angela Carter, A. S. Byatt knows that fairy tales are for adults. And in this ravishing collection she breathes new life into the form. Little Black Book of Stories offers shivers along with magical thrills. Leaves rustle underfoot in a dark wood: two middle-aged women, childhood friends reunited by chance, venture into a dark forest where once, many years before, they saw–or thought they saw–something unspeakable. Another woman, recently bereaved, finds herself slowly but surely turning into stone. A coolly rational ob-gyn has his world pushed off-axis by a waiflike art student with her own ideas about the uses of the body. Spellbinding, witty, lovely, terrifying, the Little Black Book of Stories is Byatt at the height of her craft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of collected poetry, art work, and a short story that started about twelve years ago. The poetry started with a simple muse. A thought that required no thought what-so-ever. The inspiration and the desire started with a girl sitting in the same classroom, later writing became a pleasant way to pass the time. The art work started with a severe case of writers block, which lead to drawing lines on paper. It isnt really supposed to look like anything, just whatever is seen in the eye of the beholder. The short story came about from the passing of someone that was dear to the heart. A grandma, who prayed every day for a grandson she barely even knew. The Pink Ribbon is a short story about a little girl with a pink ribbon tied in her hair, fear, and death. There are two wishes that are made with this book. Helping those with cancer is the first. Weather it is the treatment, care, or cure. A percentage of the authors proceeds will go to helping those that suffer from cancer. The second wish is helping the author find The Muse; the girl, who is now a woman, which first inspired and encouraged him to write over a decade ago.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 PULITZER PRIZE IN GENERAL NONFICTION "The Undying is a startling, urgent intervention in our discourses about sickness and health, art and science, language and literature, and mortality and death. In dissecting what she terms 'the ideological regime of cancer,' Anne Boyer has produced a profound and unforgettable document on the experience of life itself." —Sally Rooney, author of Normal People "Anne Boyer’s radically unsentimental account of cancer and the 'carcinogenosphere' obliterates cliche. By demonstrating how her utterly specific experience is also irreducibly social, she opens up new spaces for thinking and feeling together. The Undying is an outraged, beautiful, and brilliant work of embodied critique." —Ben Lerner, author of The Topeka School A week after her forty-first birthday, the acclaimed poet Anne Boyer was diagnosed with highly aggressive triple-negative breast cancer. For a single mother living paycheck to paycheck who had always been the caregiver rather than the one needing care, the catastrophic illness was both a crisis and an initiation into new ideas about mortality and the gendered politics of illness. A twenty-first-century Illness as Metaphor, as well as a harrowing memoir of survival, The Undying explores the experience of illness as mediated by digital screens, weaving in ancient Roman dream diarists, cancer hoaxers and fetishists, cancer vloggers, corporate lies, John Donne, pro-pain ”dolorists,” the ecological costs of chemotherapy, and the many little murders of capitalism. It excoriates the pharmaceutical industry and the bland hypocrisies of ”pink ribbon culture” while also diving into the long literary line of women writing about their own illnesses and ongoing deaths: Audre Lorde, Kathy Acker, Susan Sontag, and others. A genre-bending memoir in the tradition of The Argonauts, The Undying will break your heart, make you angry enough to spit, and show you contemporary America as a thing both desperately ill and occasionally, perversely glorious. Includes black-and-white illustrations

Book excerpt: Suzy and Nancy Goodman were more than sisters. They were best friends, confidantes, and partners in the grand adventure of life. For three decades, nothing could separate them. Not college, not marriage, not miles. Then Suzy got sick. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977; three agonizing years later, at thirty-six, she died. It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The Goodman girls were raised in postwar Peoria, Illinois, by parents who believed that small acts of charity could change the world. Suzy was the big sister—the homecoming queen with an infectious enthusiasm and a generous heart. Nancy was the little sister—the tomboy with an outsized sense of justice who wanted to right all wrongs. The sisters shared makeup tips, dating secrets, plans for glamorous fantasy careers. They spent one memorable summer in Europe discovering a big world far from Peoria. They imagined a long life together—one in which they’d grow old together surrounded by children and grandchildren. Suzy’s diagnosis shattered that dream. In 1977, breast cancer was still shrouded in stigma and shame. Nobody talked about early detection and mammograms. Nobody could even say the words “breast” and “cancer” together in polite company, let alone on television news broadcasts. With Nancy at her side, Suzy endured the many indignities of cancer treatment, from the grim, soul-killing waiting rooms to the mistakes of well-meaning but misinformed doctors. That’s when Suzy began to ask Nancy to promise. To promise to end the silence. To promise to raise money for scientific research. To promise to one day cure breast cancer for good. Big, shoot-for-the-moon promises that Nancy never dreamed she could fulfill. But she promised because this was her beloved sister. I promise, Suzy. . . . Even if it takes the rest of my life. Suzy’s death—both shocking and senseless—created a deep pain in Nancy that never fully went away. But she soon found a useful outlet for her grief and outrage. Armed only with a shoebox filled with the names of potential donors, Nancy put her formidable fund-raising talents to work and quickly discovered a groundswell of grassroots support. She was aided in her mission by the loving tutelage of her husband, restaurant magnate Norman Brinker, whose dynamic approach to entrepreneurship became Nancy’s model for running her foundation. Her account of how she and Norman met, fell in love, and managed to achieve the elusive “true marriage of equals” is one of the great grown-up love stories among recent memoirs. Nancy’s mission to change the way the world talked about and treated breast cancer took on added urgency when she was herself diagnosed with the disease in 1984, a terrifying chapter in her life that she had long feared. Unlike her sister, Nancy survived and went on to make Susan G. Komen for the Cure into the most influential health charity in the country and arguably the world. A pioneering force in cause-related marketing, SGK turned the pink ribbon into a symbol of hope everywhere. Each year, millions of people worldwide take part in SGK Race for the Cure events. And thanks to the more than $1.5 billion spent by SGK for cutting-edge research and community programs, a breast cancer diagnosis today is no longer a death sentence. In fact, in the time since Suzy’s death, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has risen from 74 percent to 98 percent. Promise Me is a deeply moving story of family and sisterhood, the dramatic “30,000-foot view” of the democratization of a disease, and a soaring affirmative to the question: Can one person truly make a difference?
