Freshly cut heartwood is a pale lemon yellow. In texture the wood is rather soft but firm. A cubic foot of dry wood weighs about 27 pounds. Limber pine is occasionally cut for rough construction lumber which is used locally, the quality of the lumber being poor because of numerous knots. More intensive use of dead trees would enhance the raw material base of the region's wood-using industry, facilitate management practices on logged over areas, and help decrease the cost of postharvest cleanup. One possible method of utilizing dead trees in this region is to chip the wood either in the forest or at the mill, for manufacturing into paper. However, the paper making industry needs additional information regarding the processing and quality of the resulting chips. This paper reports the results of two investigations: (1) characteristics of chips from dead down and standing trees, and (2) the pulping characteristics of dead lodgepole pine trees. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparison of the Nutrient Content of Rocky Mountain Douglas-Fir and Ponderosa Pine Trees Data on the content of nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in Douglas - fir and ponderosa pine trees are presented for the Silver Creek Study Area, in the southwestern Idaho batholith. Suppressed, intermediate, and dominant trees of each species were cut and sampled from two habitat types in the study area. Needles (stratified by age), bark, heartwood, and sapwood (stratified by bole size), and branches (stratified by branch size), were analyzed for the elements of interest. No significant differences in chemical content between habitat types were detected for either species. Interspecific differences in chemical concentration were found in one or more elements for each plant part. Trends in elemental concentration over needle age, bole size, and branch size were also suggested by the data. (1982) found for small ponderosa pine trees in the Black Hills classes 5, 6, and 7 inches) that wood volume and oven-dry weight of the wood and bark can be reliably estimated from the combined greenwood and bark weight. A total of 97% of the variation in predicting wood volume (cubic feet) from the greenwood and bark weight was accounted for in the trees. Simulation of random truckloads of small roundwood showed that this class of material can be weight scaled by either ratio-weight or regression-weight scaling methods based on a small number of sample loads. Concerning weight loss from logs left in storage, Yerkes (1967 found that for Black Hills ponderosa pine logs left in woods storage up to 108 days during late summer (july, August, September) weight loss was minor and could be ignored in weight scaling. Fifty short logs lost an average of of their beginningweight. Analysis of logs from storage sites ranging from an open pasture to a dense reproduction thicket did not show a significant effect on weight loss.
