Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hundred years ago, a small band of ordinary men and women set out on an epic journey from Britain to New England facing stormy seas, near starvation and death. What drove them to undertake this hazardous journey and endure such hardships? In this book, John Brown demonstrates that it was principally their desire for freedom to worship God according to their consciences. Their journey began long before the Mayflower set sail, and the author charts the persecution they had endured in Britain, their settling in Holland for a period, and all the events leading to their sailing in 1620, first from Southampton where they had gathered and then finally from Plymouth. The initial hardships, cold and many deaths experienced through the first winter in their new home only deepened their resolve to continue in dependence on God. Continuing difficulties gradually yielded to success and the addition of further emigrants to strengthen them and establish other colonies. This book covers events up to the uniting of these colonies in 1643. John Brown (1830-1922) was minister of the Bunyan Meeting in Bedford and is well known for his historical works.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Fathers of New England and Their Puritan Successors Placing in the forefront of this work, what an Elizabethan writer called 'a brief ingresse to the Christian reader, ' it may be well to state that it is now more than forty years since the latest previous history of the Pilgrim Fathers, printed on this side of the Atlantic, was given to the public. Therefore as might be expected, since the appearance of Mr. Bartlett's book in 1853, important contributions have been made to the literature of the subject, which have had the effect of placing it in clearer light and giving it fuller meaning. Notably the discovery in 1855 of the original manuscript of Governor Bradford's History of Plymouth Plantation may be regarded as a matter of prime importance. It was known that such a history had been written, although never published, for it was freely used by Nathaniel Morton in his New England's Memorial, published in 1669; Thomas Prince, in the preface to the first volume of his Annals, printed in 1736, had cited it as one of his manuscript authorities; and Governor Hutchinson had also used it in the preparation of the second volume of his History of Massachusetts in 1767, he being the last man who, till the present century, was known to have seen it. Book Synopsis Early New England by : David A. Weir
Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.
