Its extensive collection of journals, manuscripts, maps and music reflects over 400 years of academic development and amounts to over 6 million volumes. A Legal Deposit Library since 1801, it receives copies of all material published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The most famous of its treasures is the Book of Kells, whose rich illuminations are one of the finest examples of medieval art. Together with the Book of Durrow, also in the collection, they represent Ireland's greatest cultural treasure. The Library also bears testament to more recent history, counting letters from Irish WWI soldiers and various artefacts from the Easter Rising - including a bullet fired through the Library roof - among its collection. This selection of objects highlights the diversity of the holdings and illuminates their fascinating history.

Download or read book Ireland on Show written by Fintan Cullen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking past the apparent lack of a sustainable Irish display culture, this book demonstrates that there is a very full story to tell of the way Ireland displayed its art from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Ireland on Show analyzes the impact of the display of art as a significant political and cultural feature in the make-up of nineteenth-century Ireland - and in how Ireland was viewed beyond its own shores, in particular in Great Britain and the United States. Fintan Cullen directs much-needed critical attention and analysis to a subject that has been largely overlooked from an Irish perspective. This study moves beyond museums, to address the range of art institutions in Irish cities that displayed art, from the Royal Hibernian Academy, founded in the 1820s, to Hugh Lane's Municipal Art Gallery, opened in Dublin in 1908. Throughout, the book explores the battle between the display of a unionist ethos and a nationalist point of view, a constant that resurfaces over the period. By highlighting the tension between unionist and nationalist viewpoints, Cullen uses the display of art to investigate the complexities of Irish cultural life before the founding of the Free State.

Book Synopsis The Image in Early Cinema by : Scott Curtis
Download or read book The Image in Early Cinema written by Scott Curtis and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Image in Early Cinema, the contributors examine intersections between early cinematic form, technology, theory, practice, and broader modes of visual culture. They argue that early cinema emerged within a visual culture composed of a variety of traditions in art, science, education, and image making. Even as methods of motion picture production and distribution materialized, they drew from and challenged practices and conventions in other mediums. This rich visual culture produced a complicated, overlapping network of image-making traditions, innovations, and borrowing among painting, tableaux vivants, photography, and other pictorial and projection practices. Using a variety of concepts and theories, the contributors explore these crisscrossing traditions and work against an essentialist notion of media to conceptualize the dynamic interrelationship between images and their context.

Book Synopsis Me Darlin' Dublin's Dead and Gone by : Bill Kelly
Download or read book Me Darlin' Dublin's Dead and Gone written by Bill Kelly and published by Poolbeg Press Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Kelly survived a tough childhood in Dublin to become one of Ireland’s foremost journalists, perhaps best known for his Sunday Press soccer column as ‘Big Bill’ which was so popular it ran for thirty years. Here, with the sure touch of a born storyteller, he takes us back to his tenement boyhood in a time when ‘discos, television, even the wireless were in the realm of science fiction’ and water wings were made from two paraffin-oil tins and a piece of twine. Then he leads us onward through his extraordinary and varied life – his Catholic schooling where the nuns left him ‘in no doubt that hell was a terribly real place and damn few escaped it’ – his debut boxing event as a pro under an assumed name ‘for a fiver for three rounds’ – his introduction to journalism in the newsroom of Radio Éireann in 1946 – his brief career in PR when he represented the great boxer Jack Doyle – how he ‘rescued Kippure’ with the Irish Parachute Club – his boozing sessions with Brendan Behan and so much more. Big Bill’s love of his native city shines through every word but it is his own exuberant and humorous take on life that makes this such a memorable read.
