Book excerpt: From the kitsch cuteness of Hello Kitty to the cult of manga and anime, Japanese design has long paved the way for the West to follow. Graphic Japan goes beyond this well-known territory to reveal the myriad styles of design produced in Japan today, from packaging to posters, and typography to new media. Contemporary Japanese graphic design is a unique collision of traditional cultural influences and a focused thrust toward modernization on global terms, and the book reflects this marriage of tradition and hypermodernity. Essays on today's innovators are beautifully printed in a simple, elegant manner that is typical of traditional Japanese work, and are combined with bold and colorful visual material which reflects the brash, global commerciality of much new material. This book is an inspirational "must" for designers in the West.

Book excerpt: This is a book of photographs which were taken in eastern and northern Japan (most of the prefectures to the east and north of the black line on the map below) through the four seasons of the year. At the time this book was published (June 2011) Daniel had been living in Japan for over 10 years and he and Kazuya Numazawa had known each other for about 9.5 of those years. They spent a good deal of their weekend and vacation time traveling around together, doing photography in northern and eastern Japan and exhibiting their work on their respective websites. Friends had been encouraging them to prepare a book of their photos so that the world could see and enjoy them. They finally got around to doing just that. This book highlights approximately 450 of their best photos years taken during the 9.5 years which they had traveled around together at that time. The photos range from astounding mountain scenery taken through the seasons to close-up photos of flowers - also through the seasons. If you wonder what Japan has to offer the traveler or tourist, this book will give you some hints and clues as to what you might be able to see if you travel to Japan in any of the four seasons. This book takes you as far north as you can go on Hokkaido, the Northern Island, as well as to Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Gifu, Gunma, Kanagawa, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Toyama, Yamagata and Yamanashi Prefectures. (By the way - Daniel & Kazuya are still traveling around together, taking photographs and enjoying life as this is being written in 2015.)

Book excerpt: The Japanese landscape print has had a tremendous influence on Western art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In Japan and in the West it is often seen as the dominant form in Ukiyo-e, pictures from the floating world. And yet for all its importance, it is a genre whose history has never been written. Beyond The Great Wave is a survey or overview for all those interested in discovering the inner dynamics of one of art history's most remarkable achievements. However, it is also a quest narrative, in which landscapes and notions of Japan as a homeland are intertwined and interconnected. Although there has never been a book-length study of the Japanese landscape print in either Japanese or English, a great deal has been written about the two giants of the genre, Hokusai and Hiroshige. From what traditions did these two nineteenth-century artists emerge? Who were their predecessors? What influence, if any, did they have on other Ukiyo-e artists? Can their influence be seen in the shin-hanga and sôsaku-hanga artists of the twentieth century? This book addresses these issues, but it also looks at a number of other factors, such as the growth of tourism in nineteenth-century Japan, necessary for understanding this genre.

Book excerpt: The Getty Research Journal features the work of art historians, museum curators, and conservators from around the world as part of the Getty’s mission to promote critical thinking in the presentation, conservation, and interpretation of the world’s artistic legacy. Articles present original research related to the Getty’s collections, initiatives, and research projects. This issue features essays on the cross-cultural features of a small alabaster vessel in the “international style” of the ancient Mediterranean, French and Flemish influences in the Montebourg Psalter, a new identification for the so-called bust of Saint Cyricus, the effects of the Reformation on the art market in northern Europe, sketchbooks kept by the Portuguese painter João Glama Stroeberle containing comments from his teachers, the origins of the architectural history survey, Japanese ink aesthetics in non-ink media, the impact of the invention of adhesive tape in the 1930s on the artistic process of abstract painters, and the importance of ephemeral artifacts for the documentation of Carolee Schneemann’s performance works. Shorter texts include notices on an Egyptian ushabti from the tomb of Neferibresaneith, a bronze statuette newly identified as representing the Alexandrian god Hermanubis, and an etching by Félix Bracquemond commissioned by the Parisian gallery Arnold & Tripp.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese gardens are found throughout the world today--their unique forms now considered a universal art form. This stunning Japanese gardening book examines the work of five leading landscape architects in North America who are exploring the extraordinary power of Japanese-style garden design to create an immersive experience promoting personal and social well-being. Master garden designers Hoichi Kurisu, Takeo Uesugi, David Slawson, Shin Abe and Marc Keane have each interpreted the style and meaning of the Japanese garden in unique ways in their innovative designs for private, commercial and public spaces. Several recent Japanese-style gardens by each designer are featured in this book with detailed descriptions and sumptuous color photos. Hoichi Kurisu--transformative spaces for spiritual and physical equilibrium. Takeo Uesugi--bright, flowing gardens that evoke joyful living. David Slawson--evocations of native place that fuse with the surrounding landscape. Shin Abe--dynamically balanced "visual stories" that produce meaning and comfort. Marc Keane--reflections on human connections with nature through the art of gardens. Also included are essays on the designers and mini-essays by them about gardens in Japan which have most inspired their work, as well as commentaries by patrons and visitors to their North American gardens. The book focuses on recently-created gardens to suggest how the art form is currently evolving, and to understand how Japanese garden design principles and practices are being adapted to suit the needs and ways of people living and working outside Japan today.
