Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pianoforte and Its Acoustic Properties The study of music properly initiates its students only then when, together with the acquiring of technic, it arouses their souls by implanting in their minds a knowledge and conception of the tonal art. For piano makers also, there is such a study: it is the science of acoustics. The early violin makers pursued the study of acoustics after their fashion and they possessed a wonderful understanding of the undulations and vibrations of their instruments. All the old masters have probably passed through trying periods, in which they sought, by means of experiments, to further instruct themselves and increase their knowledge. They learned closely to observe and discriminate, gleaning from nature a definite method according to which they regulated their instruments. They must have understood the nature of their instruments thoroughly, being unable, however, to find scientific names to express the results of their experiments. Through untiring research and persistent experiments, they acquired and developed an acute sense of feeling and mental perception, which was of great assistance to them in their work and which is evidenced to day by the instruments preserved to us. Not a prescribed measuring of surface with a compasses, nor yet a copy of a model, guaranties the complete success of an instrument, but the sense of feeling must render material aid, since only he. Some of the early sonatas mentioned in it were, however, written for instruments of the jack or tangent kind. Even Beethoven's sonatas up to Op. 27, inclusive, were published for Clavicembalo o Pianoforte. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Complete Information About Pianos Rubinstein, the great prince of pianists, said I prefer the piano to any other instrument because it is a musical entity; all other instruments, including the human voice, are fragmentary to a certain extent. No other instrument so delights both the highly cultivated sense of musicians and the natural, untrained musical taste of the great majority; none other completely satisfies the demands of the most skilful and at the same time yields such gratifying results to the beginner. It is suited to the largest concert hall or the cosiest home. It is adapted to all places and all occasions. It is the universal instrument. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Piano Came to Be From the dried sinews stretched across the shell of a dead tortoise to the concert-grand piano of the present day is a far flight. Yet to this primitive source, it is said, may be traced the evolution of the stringed instrument which reached its culmination in the piano. The latter has been aptly called the household orchestra, and in tracing its origin one must go far back into the annals of the past. If we accept the Bible as history, and it is the greatest of all histories, the stringed instrument is of very ancient date. It is recorded that the ambassadors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Description and History of the Pianoforte and of the Older Keyboard Stringed Instruments There is no musical instrument so extensively used as the piano forte, and there is certainly none so little understood by the player, in the construction, or the legitimate treatment according to the construction. It would be more intimately known if the performer had to tune it, but the difficulty Of tuning renders the employment of a specialist in that art necessary. Few piano players know more about a piano than that the sounds are caused by hammers striking against wire strings. There has, however, arisen in our leading music schools a desire to know more, and students are not now satisfied to remain unacquainted with the nature of their instru ment. TO assist those who are curious about its construction is one of the Obj ects for which this book is written. I have chosen to start from the introduction of iron in the construction of the pianoforte, about 1820, as convenient for my purpose, regarding the entirely wooden framed piano as appertaining to an historical division, in which the precursors Of the piano, the clavichord, virginal or spinet, and harpsichord will be found. It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of Pianists and Composers for the Pianoforte: With an Appendix of Manufacturers of the Instrument OF all musical instruments, the Pianoforte is decidedly the most popular, and, with but few exceptions, every composer of instrumental music has written longer or shorter works for it. The interest we take in a composer and performer is certainly enhanced by knowing the country and time of his birth or death, the names, respectively, of his teachers and pupils, what his appointments were, and the distinctions which were conferred on him. To give some short and concise information on these points is the aim Of this book, which follows the scheme of the popular and useful fach-lexica, issued at Leipzig by the Bibliographical Institute. It is a special book, which deals only with the Piano, and thus the productions of composers in other branches of the musical art are not within its scope.
