Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pianist and the Art of Music: A Treatise on Piano Playing for Teachers and Students The pianist's relation to the art of music is in our present age materially different from that of the earlier virtuosos, not so much on account of greater skill in the management of the improved instrument as in reference to the ends which the artist is expected to accomplish. The piano-virtuoso, whose efforts were of an individual type altogether, following a long line of eminent players and composers (Scarlatti, Mozart, Clementi, Dussek, Woelfl, Steibelt, Gramer, Hummel, Field, Herz, Thalberg, etc.) has, in the natural process of development, made room to the pianists, whose strength rests in the reproduction of the works of other masters, such as Liszt, Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Reinecke, Hiller, Hallé, Rubinstein, Buelow, Essipoff, D'Albert, Paderewski and others. The increasing beauty and artistic variety of the masterworks of piano literature seem destined to gain a constantly increasing influence in this direction, so that an adequate reading of the gems of pianistic art will always be considered superior to the ephemeral, though perhaps novel display of individual taste and talent. Book excerpt: So many of the great pianists and teachers have come out of Poland and Russia (Rubinstein, Anton as well as Arthur, Leschetizky, Paderewski, the Lhevinnes, Gilels, Richter, and others), yet we know little about their methods of learning and teaching. George Kochevitsky in The Art of Piano Playing supplies some important sources of information previously unavailable in the United States. From these sources, tempered by this own thinking, Kochevitsky formulated a scientific approach that can solve most problems of piano playing and teaching. George Kochevitsky graduated in 1930 from Leningrad Conservatory and did post-graduate work at Moscow Conservatory. After coming to the U.S., he taught privately in New York City, gave a number of lectures, and wrote for various music periodicals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of the Pianist: Technic and Poetry in Piano Playing, for Teacher and Student I realized, later on, that I should have begun my piano study with a foundation of principles, and carried it on along educational lines; that I should have used my hands Without fear, in vigorous practice, and in other manual occupa tions. I would then have accomplished all I have done in a quarter of the time it has taken me to do it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
