Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of the Invertebrata As more attention has been paid to the morphology Of the Invertebrata, it is not our Object to speak of that branch of the subject further than Is necessary; but in some cases the function Of an organ or a tissue cannot be comprehended without referring to its anatomy. According to the great apostle* Of biological thought, the actions of living matter are termed its functions; and these functions, varied as they are, may be reduced to three categories. They are either - (i) Functions which affect the material composition of the body, and determine its mass, which is the balance of the processes Of waste on the one hand, and those of assimilation on the other. Or (2) they are functions which subserve the process of reproduction, which is essentially the detachment of a part endowed with the power of developing into an independent whole. Or (3) they are functions in virtue Of which one part Of the body is able to exert a direct influence on another, and the body, by its parts or as a whole, becomes a source of molar motion. Book excerpt: This new 3-volume set provides informative reviews on the physiology of sponges, cnidarians, round and flat worms, annelids, echinoderms, and crustaceans, advancing our knowledge of the physiology of these major invertebrate groups (Phyla). Invertebrates exhibit the largest number of species and occupy virtually every conceivable ecological niche. They are economically important in food chains, they recycle organic waste, and they are crucial pollinators of plants and sources of food. They are also medically relevant as parasites that cause major diseases in both humans and livestock. Volume 1 looks at non-Bilaterians (sponges, cnidarians, placozoans). The focus on sponge biology has recently been on symbiosis, nutrient uptake, and sensory biology. The section on cnidarians covers biomineralization, the nervous system, and development. The biology of placozoans is described in depth, including the role of neuropeptides in feeding. Volume 2 and covers crustacean physiology and diverse physiological topics, ranging from molting, respiration, water balance, biomineralization, bioreceptors, and temperature regulation to the land adaptation of terrestrial crustaceans. Echinoderms and annelids are covered in Volume 3.

The volume looks at temporary adhesion and regeneration as two important areas in echinoderm biology. It includes an important review of juxtaligamental cells, which may regulate the mechanical properties of connective tissue. Annelid physiology is discussed (neurobiology of locomotion in leeches, regeneration, reproduction) as is neuro-endocrine-immune response. Volume 1 looks at non-bilaterians (sponges, cnidarians, placozoans), while Volume 2 focuses on crustacean physiology, covering diverse physiological topics ranging from moulting, respiration, water balance, biomineralization, bioreceptors, and temperature regulation to the land adaptation of terrestrial crustaceans.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a comprehensive overview on the diverse strategies invertebrate animals have developed for nitrogen excretion and maintenance of acid-base balance and summarizes the most recent findings in the field, obtained by state-of-the-art methodology. A broad range of terrestrial, freshwater and marine invertebrate groups are covered, including crustaceans, cephalopods, insects and worms. In addition the impact of current and future changes in ocean acidification on marine invertebrates due to anthropogenic CO2 release will be analyzed. The book addresses graduate students and young researchers interested in general animal physiology, comparative physiology and marine/aquatic animal physiology. Also it is an essential source for researchers dealing with the effects of increasing pCO2 levels on aquatic animals, of which the vast majority are indeed invertebrates. All chapters are peer-reviewed.

Book excerpt: In the comparative physiology of photoreception by the Protista and the invertebrates two aspects are emphasized: (1) the diversity of visual processes in these groups and (2) their bearing upon general mechanisms of photoreception. Invertebrates have evolved a far greater variety of adaptations than vertebrates modifications aiding survival in the remarkably different biotopes they occupy. The number of species in itself suggests this multiformity; each of them has peculiarities of its own, in morphology as well as in physiology and behavior. But these special adaptations are variations on a few great themes. Although the catalogue of invertebrate species is immense, the literature concerning them nearly rivals it in extent-even if one considers only that fraction dealing with visual physiology. Taxonomy proceeds by grouping the species, categorizing them in genera, families, orders, and progressively larger units. Similarly, comparative physiology aims at an analogous, more or less compre hensive, classification. This Part A of Volume VII/6, like Part B that follows it, emphasizes the broad questions that concern groups larger than the individual species; in some cases these questions have general applicability. The middle course between approaches that are too specialized and those that are too general is often elusive, but here we attempt to follow it. The vast number of special adaptations-probably, as we have said, as large as the number of species-is beyond the range even of a handbook.

Book excerpt: The importance and originality of this book lie in its functional approach to the study of invertebrate anatomy. The authors deal with all the major groups of invertebrates, illustrating the text with realistic drawings based on whole or dissected animals. The book is intended as a text reference for use by undergraduate and graduate students of zoology and biology. The book's approach should also help the ecologist see more clearly how the activities of each kind of animal contribute to the system he is studying, and the physiologist relate the particular function in which he is interested to all those which the animal performs. Palaeontologists too may find the book of value.
