Book excerpt: The Physics of SiO2 and Its Interfaces covers the proceedings of the International Topical Conference on the Physics of SiO2 and its Interfaces, held at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York on March 22-24, 1978. The book focuses on the properties, reactions, transformations, and structures of silicon dioxide (SiO2). The selection first discusses the electronic properties of vitreous SiO2 and small polaron formation and motion of holes in a-SiO2. Discussions focus on mobility edges and polarons, deep states in the gap, and excitons. The text also ponders on field-dependent hole and exciton transport in SiO2 and electron emission from SiO2 into vacuum. The publication takes a look at the electronic structures of crystalline and amorphous SiO2; band structures and electronic properties of SiO2; and optical absorption spectrum of SiO2. The text also tackles chemical bond and related properties of SiO2; topological effects on the band structure of silica; and properties of localized SiO2 clusters in layers of disordered silicon on silver. The selection is a good reference for physicists and readers interested in the physics of silicon dioxide.

Book excerpt: The first international symposium on the subject "The Physics and Chemistry of Si02 and the Si-Si02 Interface," organized in association with the Electrochemical Society, Inc. , was held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 15- 20, 1988. This symposium contained sixty papers and was so successful that the sponsoring divisions decided to schedule it on a regular basis every four years. Thus, the second symposium on "The Physics and Chemistry of Si02 and the Si02 Interface was held May 18-21, 1992 in St. Louis, Missouri, again sponsored by the Electronics and Dielectrics Science and Technology Divisions of The Electrochemical Society. This volume contains manuscripts of most of the fifty nine papers presented at the 1992 symposium, and is divided into eight chapters - approximating the organization of the symposium. Each chapter is preceded with an introduction by the session organizers. It is appropriate to provide a general assessment of the current status and understanding of the physics and chemistry of Si02 and the Si02 interface before proceeding with a brief overview of the individual chapters. Semiconductor devices have continued to scale down in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. This has resulted in thinner gate and field oxides as well as much closer spacing of individual device features. As a result, surface condition, native oxide composition, and cleaning and impurity effects now provide a much more significant contribution to the properties of oxides and their interfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silicon, the basic material for a multibillion-dollar industry, is the most widely researched and applied semiconductor, and its surfaces are the most thoroughly studied of all semiconductor surfaces. Silicon Surfaces and Formation of Interfaces may be used as an introduction to graduate-level physics and chemical physics. Moreover, it gives a specialized and comprehensive description of the most common faces of silicon crystals as well as their interaction with adsorbates and overlayers. This knowledge is presented in a systematic and easy-to-follow way. Discussion of each system is preceded by a brief overview which categorizes the features and physical mechanisms before the details are presented. The literature is easily available, and the references am numerous and organized in tables, allowing a search without the need to browse through the text. Though this volume focuses on a scientific understanding of physics on the atomistic and mesoscopic levels, it also highlights existing and potential links between basic research in surface science and applications in the silicon industry. It will be valuable to anyone writing a paper, thesis, or proposal in the field of silicon surfaces.

Book excerpt: The properties of Si02 and the Si-Si02 interface provide the key foundation onto which the majority of semiconductor device technology has been built Their study has consumed countless hours of many hundreds of investigators over the years, not only in the field of semiconductor devices but also in ceramics, materials science, metallurgy, geology, and mineralogy, to name a few. These groups seldom have contact with each other even though they often investigate quite similar aspects of the Si02 system. Desiring to facilitate an interaction between these groups we set out to organize a symposium on the Physics and Chemistry of Si()z and the Si-Si()z Interface under the auspices of The Electrochemical Society, which represents a number of the appropriate groups. This symposium was held at the 173rd Meeting of The Electrochemical Society in Atlanta, Georgia, May 15-20, 1988. These dates nearly coincided with the ten year anniversary of the "International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and its Interfaces" held at mM in 1978. We have modeled the present symposium after the 1978 conference as well as its follow on at North Carolina State in 1980. Of course, much progress has been made in that ten years and the symposium has given us the opportunity to take a multidisciplinary look at that progress.

Book excerpt: Surfaces and Interfaces: Physics and Electronics covers the proceedings of the second Trieste ICTP-IUPAP Semiconductor Symposium, conducted at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy on August 30 to September 3, 1982. The book focuses on the processes, methodologies, reactions, and approaches involved in semiconductor physics. The selection first elaborates on the electronic properties and surface geometry of GaAs and ZnO surfaces; electronic structure of Si (III) surfaces; and photoemission studies of surface states on Si (III) 2X1. Discussions focus on consistency of different experiments, relating experiments to a theoretical model, quenching of surface states by hydrogen, inverse photoemission results, and basic data and models of the low-index ZnO surfaces. The text then examines Si (III) 2X1 studies by angle resolved photoemission; electronic surface states at steps in Si (III) 2X1; and a novel method for the study of optical properties of surfaces. The manuscript takes a look at spot profile analysis (LEED) of defects at silicon surfaces; chemisorption-induced defects at interfaces on compound semiconductors; and surface defects on semiconductors. The microscopic properties and behavior of silicide interfaces, recombination at semiconductor surfaces and interfaces, and dipoles, defects, and interfaces are also discussed. The selection is a highly recommended source of data for physicists and readers wanting to study semiconductor physics.

This conference was a sequel to the first conference INFOS 79 held in Durham. INFOS 81 attracted 170 participants from universities, research institutes and industry. Attendants were registered from 15 nations. The biannual topical conference series will be continued by INFOS 83 to be held in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in April 1983. The conference proceedings include all the invited (Y) and contrlDUtea (42) papers presented at the meeting. The topics range from the basic physical understanding of the properties of insulating films and their interface to semiconductors to the discussion of stability and dielectric strength as well as growing and deposition techniques which are relevant for technical applications. Strong emphasis was given to the semiconductor silicon and its native oxide; however, sessions on compound semiconductors and other insulating films also raised strong interest. The proceedings survey the present state of our understanding of the system of insulating films on semiconductors. As a new aspect of the topic, the properties of semiconductors deposited and laser processed on insulating films was in cluded for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monographic book addresses the basics of the charge carrier photoemission from one solid to another - the internal photoemission, (IPE) - and different spectroscopic applications of this phenomenon to solid state heterojunctions. This is the first book in the field of IPE, which complements the conventional external photoemission spectroscopy by analysing interfaces separated from the sample surface by a layer of a different solid or liquid. IPE is providing the most straightforward and, therefore, reliable information regarding the energy spectrum of electron states at interfaces. At the same time, the method provides the unique capability of analysing the heterostructures relevant to the modern micro- and nano-electronic devices as well as new materials involved in their design and fabrication. In addition to the discussion of fundamental physical and technical aspects of IPE spectroscopic applications, several “hot topics are addressed. These include development of new insulating materials for advances Si MOS technology (both high-k gate insulators and low-k dielectrics for interconnect insulation), metal gate materials, development of heterostructures based on high-mobility semiconductors, etc. Thanks to a considerable activity in this field over the last few years, the recent results concerning band structure of most important interfaces involving novel materials can now be documented. - First complete description of the internal photoemission phenomena - A practical guide to internal photoemission measurements - Describes reliable energy barrier determination procedures - Surveys trap spectroscopy methods applicable to thin insulating layers - Provides an overview of the most recent results on band structure of high-permittivity insulating materials and their interfaces - Contains a complete collection of reference data on interface band alignment for wide-bandgap insulating materials in contact with metals and semiconductors
