Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over fifty years have passed since the first patient was treated with fast neutrons, but this form of therapy is still a matter of bitter dispute. Neutron generators have been installed in many countries and now patients can be treated with equipment that is technically similar to modern megavoltage x-ray equipment. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams presents a full discussion of the physical and radiobiological factors governing the production and use of fast neutron beams for therapy. The book discusses vastly improved neutron generators, advances in the standardization of dosimetric methods, and the specification of radiation quality. In addition, it explores nuclear methods of analysis, particularly neutron activation analysis in vivo. Influencing the place of radiotherapy with neutrons and other heavy particles, the radiobiological factors governing the treatment of cancer with radiation are examined. The author also studies the radiation hazard of neutrons, a matter of importance in the use of neutrons for chemical analysis in vivo. The Physics and Radiobiology of Fast Neutron Beams will be a valuable introduction to the subject for radiotherapists, medical physicists, radiographers, and radiobiologists new to the field. The book is also a useful summary of current knowledge for those already established in the use of fast neutrons for medical purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical methods for generating fast-neutron beams for cancer radiotherapy are compared (DT versus D on Be). A general effort is made to compare and contrast the interactions and depth-dose patterns for gamma ray beams with those for the NRL fast-neutron beam of app. 14-MeV average energy (35-MeV D+ on Be). Typical instrumentation for dosimetry and monitoring are described, and the procedure for absolute dose calibration of non-tissue-equivalent ionization chambers is outlined, based on application of the Bragg-Gray relation. The buildup of the dose by the secondary proton field in TE first few millimeters of tissue (which gives rise to 'skin-sparing' in radiotherapy) has been measured in TE plastic, and the compromise of skin sparing by superposition of various materials is also shown, along with restoration of skin sparing by interposing lead foils to filter out the recoil protons. Narrow-broad-beam attenuation coefficients for 60 Co gamma rays vs the NRL neutron beam are shown for a variety of materials, and some semi-broad-beam data for Benelex (pressed wood), Pb, and Fe are also included. The book gives an overview of the developments of the past 28 years, assesses the results of fast neutron treatment, and reviews the compiled clinical data worldwide. The authors describe the radiobiological profile of the neutron beams and evaluate the neutron RBE for secondary cancer induction, they introduce heavy-ion therapy, which combines high physical selectivity with the biological advantages of high-LET radiation for some tumor types, and finally they describe the very recent developments in Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).

Book excerpt: 14 MeV neutrons, or fusion neutrons, have more energy than other neutrons (10 times more than fission neutrons) and, as such, offer unique advantages in various industrial uses. This book gives a detailed account of neutron activation for threat material detection such as in landmines, packaged explosives and cargo containers, as well as under extreme conditions, including underwater and in space. It also provides extensive treatment of neutron logging for oil industry applications, neutron radiography and other medical applications.
