Book excerpt: This report presents an extensive examination of the Ontario environmental protection industry, including a review of industry size, growth prospects, export market opportunities and competitiveness. A model for estimating the economic impact of selected environmental projects is also given. The report updates a 1988/89 study, describing the current structure and scale of the industry in Ontario; reviewing trends in legislation and the market demand for environmental products in Canada and selected foreign markets; discussing government policy impacts on the environmental protection industry; and describing the environmental impact model used. A database was developed through a mail survey of 550 companies, with a telephone follow-up, and interviews with a sample of 50 companies in various segments of the industry. Interviews were also conducted with representatives of manufacturing industries, utilities and municipalities that purchase environmental products and services in Ontario and with 20 additional industry participants and professional associations on human resource skills in the province.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper aims to evaluate the availability and suitability of waste paper for conversion to biofuel and to look generally at environmental impacts of processing waste paper. It starts by providing data on waste paper quantities by paper type for each province or territory. Next, it gives a detailed analysis of the variation of prices by paper type and future price projections. The major practices of waste disposal, recycling, conversion and landfilling are discussed and the quantities of waste paper which would not be available for recycling due to technical and practical constraints are estimated. The feasibility of using waste paper as feedstock for each of 3 conversion processes is discussed and then scenarios are developed for different recycling rates and conversion options. Environmental impacts of these scenarios are described and emission factors for each utilization or disposal process are discussed. The emission factors are next applied to quantities of waste paper for each of the scenarios and results are discussed. The document ends with conclusions and recommendations for future work.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is often considered to be a journey. The lifecycle of waste can similarly be considered to be a journey from the cradle (when an item becomes valueless and, usually, is placed in the dustbin) to the grave (when value is restored by creating usable material or energy; or the waste is transformed into emissions to water or air, or into inert material placed in a landfill). This preface provides a route map for the journey the reader of this book will undertake. Who? Who are the intended readers of this book? Waste managers (whether in public service or private companies) will find a holistic approach for improving the environmental quality and the economic cost of managing waste. The book contains general principles based on cutting edge experience being developed across Europe. Detailed data and a computer model will enable operations managers to develop data-based improvements to their systems. Producers oj waste will be better able to understand how their actions can influence the operation of environmentally improved waste management systems. Designers oj products and packages will be better able to understand how their design criteria can improve the compatibility of their product or package with developing, environmentally improved waste management systems. Waste data specialists (whether in laboratories, consultancies or environ mental managers of waste facilities) will see how the scope, quantity and quality of their data can be improved to help their colleagues design more effective waste management systems.
