Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three generations of American photography - by a family that, like no otber, has influenced the history of international photography, the photographic scene around the world, and its technical perfection. Edward Weston, the father of Cole and the grand-father of Kim, has become a legend as a photographer. In the early twenties he had already created a sensation with his soft, clay-colored studies whose artistic subject matter reminds one of the "Photo Secession" founded by Alfred Stieglitz in 1902. Edward Weston's purist studies of bodies, of landscapes, of fruit, vegetables, and other commonplace things propagate the pure, unmanipulated photograph with a tendency towards abstraction. Joint experiments with the new developments in color photography helped Cole Weston to realize quickly that color afforded him new lighting possibilities. It gave him the possibility to create his own identity and to step out of his father's black and white shadow. Cole Weston perfected his work to such an extent that today he is known as a pioneer in the field of artistic color photography. Kim Weston has broken with the Weston tradition of objectivity. His studio work is always staged and recalls a style characteristic of the surrealists in the twenties and the thirties. The black and white scenarios have an allegorical character; they comment on the human society and the rat race of modern times so that they almost form an antithesis to the landscape photography of his father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Internet is an important source for locating photographic images, there still are hundreds of photography books published each year for whose contents there is no external access. This second supplement to Photography Books Index addresses this need by analyzing important photographic anthologies that have been published since 1985. Accessing more than fifty photographic anthologies that are widely held in libraries across the country--along with images from two critical annual compilations, Best of Photojournalism and Graphis Annual--this book identifies photographs that record the history of our times. This reference guide provides an important index to contemporary as well as historical photographers, including those for whom full monographs have not been published. Photographs of important individuals as well as photographic records of cataclysmic events can be located through this index. Extensive descriptions of the individual photographs--from the commonplace to the extraordinary--are identified in this volume. Organized into three sections--Photographers, Subjects of Photographs, and Portraits of Named Individuals--these descriptions provide the researcher with important information on each photograph. An essential volume for all public, special and academic libraries, this index will be an invaluable resource for reporters, historians, academics, students and anyone wishing to research photographs and photographers.

Book excerpt: Long out of print, this seminal collection of essays and photographs are by artist, theorist and filmmaker, Allan Sekula. Originally published by the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1984, in these essays and images Sekula sought to portray the inextricable bond between labour and material culture, drawing deeply on Marxist theory to argue passionately for a collective model of progress. Sekula taught at California Institute of Arts (CalArts) from 1985 until his death in 2013, and from that insider's position he critiqued photography and the circumstances of its production and consumption, exposing what the medium failed to represent - women, labourers, minorities and the institutional structures that reinforce cultural biases. Allan Sekula (1951-2013) was an American artist, whose work spans multiple media: long form photographic series (Aerospace Folktales, 1973; School as a Factory,1980; War Without Bodies, 1991/96), critical texts (The Body and the Archive, 1986 and Debating Occupy, 2012) and film (The Forgotten Space, 2012).
