Book excerpt: With fewer than 5000 native speakers remaining, the Mexican indigenous language of Coatzospan Mixtec (CM) faces potential extinction in coming generations. Spoken only in the remote northern mountains of the Mexican state of Oaxaca in San Juan Coatzospan, the language has received relatively little linguistic documentation, though some fundamental work has been conducted by Pike and Small (1974) and Gerfen (1999). The primary goal of this project is to continue the process of describing this endangered language in the hope of gaining a more complete knowledge of the linguistic systems of tone used around the world. Specifically, this thesis is concerned with the description of how lexical tone is implemented phonetically in CM both in words produced in isolation as well as in combination with other words. Using voice recordings of a selection of single words and two word phrases, the fundamental frequency of the voice was measured and averaged across repetitions to show how the phonological process of terracing downstep influences the fundamental frequencies of an isolated word. The findings show that tone patterns may be affected by adjacent tones when spoken in sentence context. A downstep process phoneme /!/, postulated by Pike and Small (1974), appears to cause downstep when contiguous to an H tone. When adjacent to an L tone it does not show the same downstep effects. The data also show that a shift in H f0 target placement before a lowered H or a L tone may occur in an attempt to further disperse the articulation of adjacent tone targets. L.H. tones that follow /!/ lose their sharp rise but still resist declination while the L target of a L.L. couplet seems to shift rightward and fall sharply.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BACKGROUND This book focuses on two major issues - vowel glottalization and nasalization - in the phonology and phonetics of Coatzospan Mixtec (henceforth CM). CM is an Otomanguean language currently spoken by roughly 2000 people (Small 1990) in the village of San Juan Coatzospan, which is located in the Sierra Mazateca of northern Oaxaca, Mexico.' Though Mixtec constitutes a major branch of the Otomanguean family, the so-called dialects are most appropriately viewed as distinct languages. According to Josserand (1982), there are at least 22 mutually unintelligible varieties of Mixtec. For its part, CM is among the most isolated. Located in the mountains, the village is surrounded entirely by Mazatec speaking communities. Only two other Mixtec languages exhibit over a 25% rate of mutual intelligibility with CM (Josserand 1982). And though it is not clear how this group of Mixtecs came to settle in what is a Mazatec speaking area, their isolation has given rise to special properties not shared by other varieties of the language. Major elements of both the phonology of vowel glottalization and nasalization under focus in this book are, to my knowledge, unique to CM among the Mixtec languages.

Download or read book Tone Analysis for Field Linguists written by Keith Snider and published by SIL International. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tone, the use of pitch to provide phonological contrast between morphemes, plays an integral role in the structures of many languages. This book teaches linguists a tried-and-proven methodology for analyzing tone in any part of the world. Significant features: • Delivers the most comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to tone analysis for field linguists • Emphasizes the discovery of contrastive tone patterns of morphemes, as opposed to contrastive tones of tone-bearing units • Focuses on keeping constant all factors that can potentially affect tone, so that utterances being compared are truly comparable • Includes a chapter on the phonetic properties of pitch • Presents principles for developing orthographies for tone languages • Includes comprehensive accompanying online exercises* that guide students from beginning to end through a complete analysis of nominal tone in a single language, Chumburung. Assuming little prior knowledge of tone or tone languages, Tone Analysis for Field Linguists is readily accessible to students and field workers alike who have previously taken introductory courses in articulatory phonetics, phonology, and morphology and syntax. *Instructors may access the accompanying online exercises. Download or read book The Phonetics and Phonology of Tone Mapping in a Constraint-based Approach written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation concerns both phonetic and phonological aspects of tone mapping in various Chinese languages. The central issue addressed is the role of contrast and positional prominence and neutralization in the realization of tone. The inventory of tonal contrasts constrains the outputs of contextual neutralization as well as the location of pitch targets in phonetic implementation. Two prominent phonological positions in the tone sandhi domain are distinguished: peripheral (initial and final) positions and metrically strong positions. Input tones occupying different prominent positions in the input are preserved in the output; their realization in the output can be determined by the location of stress. A typology of diverse patterns of tone preservation and realization emerge from the interaction of positional faithfulness and positional markedness constraints. The research findings reported here have implications for both phonetics and phonoloy.
