Book excerpt: This book represents a comparison of the critique of Buddhism as set forth in the interpretations of Sankara, Madhva, and Ramanuja to the sutras of the second section (adhyaya) of the Brahma-sutras concerned with the refutation of Buddhism, with the positions actually elaborated by the Buddhists in their own texts. An attempt is also made to compare the conflicting interpretations of the three commentators to these particular sutras, in accordance with the philosophical approach unique to each commentator. The book is divided into two parts. The first part consists of an Introductory Background. It includes a brief description of the Brahma-sutras as a text and summarizes the philosophical positions of the three commentators. The second part proceeds sutra by sutra to study the three commentators' interpretations of the particular sutras directed against the Buddhists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hoped that this book will recreate an interest in Schopenhauer’s philosophy in India and abroad with a new perspective. There is a recent revival of Schopenhauerism or at least a rediscovery of certain very original and fundamental ideas of Schopenhauer in the contemporary academic world. Schopenhauer has been rightly described as a â€Âbridge’ between Western and Indian philosophy. In this regard Prof Kossler (President of Schopenhauer Gesellschaft) writes, â€ÂI think in his (Schopenhauer’s) thinking lies a way of bridging cultural differences but that requires a thorough investigation of the relations between the two, which can only be carried out in co-operation with scientists of both cultures.†Hence, this kind of research-oriented volume will further foster mutual understanding between the Eastern and Western philosophical traditions. Indian philosophy already owes so much to Schopenhauer in the sense that he paid homage to the Vedas, Upanisads and Buddhism. Hence the significance of the book would have to be judged in terms of a tribute to Schopenhauer. It will be an honour to the memory of Schopenhauer, one of the first Western thinkers who brought recognition to Indian Philosophy in the west. The most important aspect of the book is that the list of paper-contributors is composed of an international team which includes selected Schopenhauerian scholars from Australia, Japan, USA, Canada, Germany and India who are working on this theme for a long time. But the significance is that the serious research works of these international scholars will be combined for the first time in one single book. Its specialty lies in the fact that the Indian scholars are participating in a large number in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some postcolonial theorists argue that the idea of a single system of belief known as "Hinduism" is a creation of nineteenth-century British imperialists. Andrew J. Nicholson introduces another perspective: although a unified Hindu identity is not as ancient as some Hindus claim, it has its roots in innovations within South Asian philosophy from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries. During this time, thinkers treated the philosophies of Vedanta, Samkhya, and Yoga, along with the worshippers of Visnu, Siva, and Sakti, as belonging to a single system of belief and practice. Instead of seeing such groups as separate and contradictory, they re-envisioned them as separate rivers leading to the ocean of Brahman, the ultimate reality. Drawing on the writings of philosophers from late medieval and early modern traditions, including Vijnanabhiksu, Madhava, and Madhusudana Sarasvati, Nicholson shows how influential thinkers portrayed Vedanta philosophy as the ultimate unifier of diverse belief systems. This project paved the way for the work of later Hindu reformers, such as Vivekananda, Radhakrishnan, and Gandhi, whose teachings promoted the notion that all world religions belong to a single spiritual unity. In his study, Nicholson also critiques the way in which Eurocentric concepts—like monism and dualism, idealism and realism, theism and atheism, and orthodoxy and heterodoxy—have come to dominate modern discourses on Indian philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the oldest philosophical texts of the world, the Vedas have always aroused much scholarly curiosity among people from all disciplines. Esteemed philosophy scholar Paul Deussen rigorously and systematically studied the Vedanta. Using the premises of Plato and Kant to solve the fundamental problem of causality posed to the Advaita Vedanta, he paved the way for the dialogue between Indian and western philosophy. Although Deussen found the Advaitic principles to be of the greatest value to mankind, he objectively examines the conflicts within Sankara s thought in The Philosophy of the Vedanta and the Vedantasara. A full compilation of Sadananda Yogendra s Vedantasara is provided with an in-depth enquiry into each verse accompanied by critical notes from various intellectual sources. The Sanskrit verses have also been given in their original script.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hindu scriptures the Upanishads are, according to German scholar PAUL DEUSSEN (1845-1919), the culminating point of the Indian doctrine of the universe, an achievement that had been reached even before the arrival of the Buddha. In this work-originally published in German in 1906 and translated into English two years later-Deussen explores the place of the Upanishads in the literature of the Veda and explains the theology, cosmology, and psychology of that holy book. A landmark for East-West cross-cultural scholarship, The Philosophy of the Upanishads helped create the European understanding of the mind and heart of India, a philosophical and cultural endeavor that consumed both academics and armchair truth-seekers of the day. Today, it is still essential reading for anyone wishing to obtain a deeper knowledge of Indian spiritual wisdom.

Book excerpt: Eternal Wisdom explains the connection between art, mythology, spirituality, and religion through the language of symbols. These concepts are taken outside of the context of religious philosophy to explain how these ideas should be revised to achieve a positive cultural outlook for the increasingly bleak modern era. Archetypes and mystical experiences possess an inherent immortal existence in the collective human subconscious. They are eternally existent in artistic symbolism and spiritual traditions. Part earthly and part-other worldly, these hidden forces interact with humanity by providing a primordial source for the creative facets of human existence that are channeled into the diverse range of spiritual, mystical, and cultural experiences. This book examines the strands of esoteric thought and gnosis provided in the teachings of perennial philosophy - a topic that has been predominantly associated with prestigious authors such as Carl Jung, René Guénon, Frithjof Schuon, Ananda Coomaraswamy, Huston Smith, and Aldous Huxley. Eternal Wisdom aspires to expand on the existing corpus of teachings by advocating for the inclusion of polytheist cultural sources. Additionally, esoteric practices - including divination and the alchemy - are discussed within the context of perennial philosophy and the primordial tradition.
