Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion, Vol. 1: A Critical and Speculative Treatise of Man's Religious Experience and Development in the Light of Modern Science and Reflective Thinking Volume deals chiefly with the collection and exhibition Of the data furnished by religious experience. It attempts a general survey Of the phenomenology Of religion, as regarded from the historical and psychological points Of view. A mere refer ence to the titles Of the three different Parts into which this Volume is divided will make this more clear. It need only to be added in this connection that, in treating Of the religious being of man, I have laid especial emphasis upon those larger, social reactions Of the human Self which relate the spiritual life and development to all the other important forms of race culture. In this way Only can the immense social value which religion necessarily has, be made sufficiently apparent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History, Vol. 1 The first edition of this book was published at a time in many ways unfavourable to the reception of such a work. The book has yet in a comparatively short period made its way far beyond the limits of Germany, and though attacked in some quarters, has for the most part found great favour. The more have I felt it incumbent on me when the opportunity arose for a new edition to remove, as far as I was able, the defects of my work, to which I was by no means blind. What was most required was a considerably extended treatment of the first part of the work, the history of the philosophy of religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, Vol. 1 of 3: Together With a Work on the Proofs of the Existence of God As regards the rendering of the more strictly technical terms employed by Hegel, it has seemed advisable not to adhere rigidly to any one set of English words, but rather to vary the renderings according to the various changes of meaning, and occasionally to add an alternative English equivalent. Thus Begrifi' has usually been translated by Notion - a word which, however objec tionable otherwise, has already firmly fixed itself in our philosophical terminology; but conception has also been used for it in cases where there was no risk of mis understanding. Miss Sanderson had decided on idea as the least objectionable rendering of Vorstellung, - perhaps the most troublesome word in the Hegelian language, - and this the Editor has retained where the German word was used in a very special sense; but ordinary thought, popular conception, and other equivalent expressions have been freely employed; and in this connection the Editor desires to acknowledge the great assistance he has derived from the notes on Hegelian terms given by Professor Wallace in the valuable Prolegomena to his translation of Hegel's Logic. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion provides a broad overview of the topics which are at the forefront of discussion in contemporary philosophy of religion. Prominent views and arguments from both historical and contemporary authors are discussed and analyzed. The book treats all of the central topics in the field, including the coherence of the divine attributes, theistic and atheistic arguments, faith and reason, religion and ethics, miracles, human freedom and divine providence, science and religion, and immortality. In addition it addresses topics of significant importance that similar books often ignore, including the argument for atheism from hiddenness, the coherence of the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, and the relationship between religion and politics. It will be a valuable accompaniment to undergraduate and introductory graduate-level courses.

Book excerpt: When Gene Long, editor of Kluwer's Handbook of Contemporary Philosophy of Religion Series, first invited me to write the volume on Analytic Philosophy of Religion, I accepted with great enthusiasm. My only explanation for that enthusiasm now is that I was younger and more naive at the time. Soon after starting work on the volume, my enthusiasm was dampened by the daunting magnitude of the task. I began as a sprinter and quickly settled into the pace of a long-distance runner. Although I considered myself well read in the subject, I soon discovered that I had a great deal of research to do to be confident that I had considered all of the major contributions to the various discussions, issues, and of religion. As I read more and more problems found within analytic philosophy books and articles, I realized that I had rushed into a territory already well trodden by the angels. I am greatly impressed by the sophistication and subtlety of philosophical argument that characterize the different debates in contemporary analytic philosophy of religion. This volume covers a vast amount of material. I have endeavored to provide the fairest possible reading of different authors, and, in cases where I include my own critical evaluations and develop my own positions, I have endeavored to provide the strongest possible interpretations of the positions I criticize.
