Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Being, Vol. 1: Reflection and Mystery It might be said in the first place that a road implies space; and that the notion of space is something from which a meta physical investigation, as such, must abstract. One must make thesimple answer that if my metaphor must be rejected on this count, so must every kind of discursive thinking; for it is all too evident that the notion of discursiveness implies, and rests on, a simple physical image like that of walking along a road. Moreover, we shall later on have occasion to recognize the existence and philosophical rights of a sort of spatiality which might be called the spatiality of inner experience; and it may be that this spatiality of inner experience is coextensive with the whole spiritual life. But the objection may be put in another way, which has a dangerous look of being much more genuinely awkward. To lay down a road in a place where at first there were only tracks, is that not equivalent to fixing in advance a certain destination at which one intends to arrive, and must not that destination, itself, be very exactly located? The underlying image would be that of a grotto, a mine, or a sanctuary whose whereabouts one knew in advance. It would be a matter of showing the way there to those who for one reason or another wanted to have a look at the place, no doubt in order to profit from its riches. But does not this presuppose that the result we are working for has already been achieved, even before we start working for it: does it not pre suppose a preliminary or original discovery of the grotto or the sanctuary? Well, looking at the matter in my own way, I must ask whether, in the realm of philosophy, we can really talk about results? Is not all such talk based on a misunderstanding of the specific character of a philosophical investigation, as such? The question raised here at least obliges us to come to much closer grips with the very notion of a result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Matter, and Other Essays World has ever known before to associate the emotions of religion with the discoveries of science. To those whose only notion of alliance between religion and science consists in the futile compromise of a Bridge water Treatise this may appear a bold assertion. But those to whom the most obvious emotion of religion is reverential awe, and its chief fruits self-subordination, uncompromising truth, and charity, will gladly allow that science, as represented by its most distinguished masters, is increasingly affected by the inspirations of the spiritual life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eleusinian and Bacchic Mysteries: A Dissertation, 3d Ed Alcibiades was drunk when he ventured to touch what his countrymen deemed sacred. The undercurrent of this world is set toward one goal; and inside of human credulity - call it human weakness, if you please - is a power almost infinite, a holy faith capable of apprehending the supremest truths of all Existence. The veriest dreams of life, pertaining as they do to "the minor mystery of death," have in them more than external fact can reach or explain; and Myth, however much she is proved to be a child of Earth, is also received among men as the child of Heaven. The Cinder-Wench of the ashes will become the Cinderella of the Palace, and be wedded to the King's Son. The instant that we attempt to analyze, the sensible, palpable facts upon which so many try to build, disappear beneath the surface, like a foundation laid upon quicksand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy of Mysterious Agents, Human and Mundane, or the Dynamic Laws and Relations of Man: Embracing the Natural Philosophy of Phenomena Styled "Spiritual Manifestations" While every other field of natural inquiry seems to be occupied with busy, patient plodders for the ore of truth, - while the pro foundest talents and the most varied learning are employed in developing the sublime laws of the heavens and the earth, - while the mysteries of light, heat, electricity, and of magnetism, of chem ical aflinity and of molecular agency, are being displayed, in their wonderful relations to this mundane sphere, - no profound learn ing, no master mind, seems to have entered this field with the same spirit of patient inquiry and unmystified intellect that, in modern times, characterize our chemists and our astronomers, in their respective fields. But we have to remember that, by the former, the mysteries of alchemy have been transformed to the precise laws of chemistry; and that, by the latter, the fearful wonders of astrology have assumed the sublim0 principles of astronomy. Numerous works have been written upon the mys. Ries of which this volume treats but, with only here and there an exception, they have regarded the phenomena as the disclosures of the invisible world as the manifestations of spirits not as the phenomena of nature, to be classified and arranged accord ing to their relations, that their real agency may be discovered. We are always going after mental gymnastics. Now the mystery story is mental gymnastics. By the time the reader has followed a chain of facts through he has exercised his mind, given himself a mental breather. But the claims of the true mystery story do not end with the general reader. It is entitled to the consideration of the discriminating because it indubitably takes its own place as a gauge of mastery in the field of the short story.
