Download or read book The Rothschilds and Their Collections of Illuminated Manuscripts written by Christopher De Hamel and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The art collections of the Rothschilds were legendary for their extravagance and refinement. This is the first history of the Rothschilds as bibliophiles and, especially, as collectors of medieval illuminated manuscripts. It describes the extraordinary collections of the Rothschilds, and the movement of these supremely important manuscripts across the private libraries of Europe. In 1940 the Rothschilds' collections in Paris were looted by the Nazis, and the tale pursues the fate of the stolen manuscripts, some of them still missing. The inquiry traces literally hundreds of illuminated manuscripts, including some of the world's most famous books, made for the Duc de Berry, Catherine of Cleves, Isabella the Catholic, and many others.

Download or read book Operation XX And Me written by Glyndwr Phillips and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approached by the Intelligence Force to help in the release of VIPs held by the Germans in is last year at school and the last year of World War II, Glyndwr afterwards returns to real life, looking for a job he likes and can do. Years later he is drawn back to help the Force and they offer an expected incentive. This becomes a pattern for his life. This story, written in the late 1970s, remained undiscovered until three years after the authors death in 2014. Much of it was familiar but the sections involving Operation XX were completely unknown. At first it was thought the title referred to the group of boys trained for the first operation but internet searches brought to light the double meaning of XX: 20 (in Roman numerals) and double-cross. Operation XX was set up in 1941 to use captured German spies to feed back misinformation to Germany. It eventually came under MI5. Glyndwr always questioned what choice, if any, he had in the events and the way life took him. For his family the discovery of the story raised many questions that may never be answered.

Book excerpt: The library of Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) is arguably the most important collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual. It was bequeathed to the nation by Sir Robert's granson in 1701. The British Library is currently engaged in laying the groundwork for a new and definitive catalogue of the manuscripts.
