Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York Medical Journal, Vol. 83: Incorporating the Philadelphia Medical Journal and the Medical News; January to June, 1906, Inclusive They are and have been well recognized surgical conditions, and their avoidance and relief have given rise to much speculation. Still no definite or generally accepted procedure has been adopted. It is somewhat surprising how different surgeons have expressed themselves on these postoperative results, based both on their own and other oper ators' cases. I have encountered these complica tions in my personal experience and have noted them also as results of other operators' work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York Medical Journal, Vol. 101: Incorporating the Philadelphia Medical Journal and the Medical News, a Weekly Review of Medicine; January to June, 1915, Inclusive At the field hospital we were ready to operate day or night, within an hour after a definite diag nosis was made. The teaching of that great teacher and operator, Deaver, that delay means disaster, was kept constantly in mind. At the field hospital five medical officers were on duty. Consultants were at hand, and interference by solicitous relatives and friends was not a cause' for delay. A careful examination with a leucocyte count was made in each case. A diagnosis having been made, the patient was placed in bed in the Fowler position even for the hour's time while preparation was made for operation. The simplification of modern surgi cal asepsis was a big factor as a time saver. The area for Operation was given a dry shave, and paint ed with one half strength U. S. P. Tincture of iodine, half an hour before operation; this was followed by a thorough painting of the area with the same strength solution immediately preceding operation. The machinery for its economic and successful management already exists. The Marine Hospital Service, through its medical officers, can readily assume and perform all the duties required in making such an examination, etc. Now, it is notorious that 110 marine hospital service at present exists at many of our large cities, and, if it be created, the physician who is occupied with the sick cannot spend his time examining recruits.
