Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Laffoley is a Visionary artist who lives and works in a tiny space in Boston he calls "the Boston Visionary Cell." A trained architect, Laffoley produces brilliantly colored mandala paintings filled with symbols and texts. Each painting is accompanied by a tex called a "thought-form," which serves as commentary on the painting's content. The paintings--many of them large (73 x 73 inches)--have titles that range from the paranormal and arcane ("The Ectoplasmic Man," "The Sexuality of Robots") to the erudite: "De Rerum Natura," referring to the poet Lucretius. Laffoley is interested in "the mechanics of mysticism," time and space, dreams, magic, and consciousness. In addition to painting, he has also designed a time machine and a prayer gun. This book collects what Laffoley and his gallerist, Douglas Walla, see as "the essential works"--94 color plates w/91 attendant thought-forms. It also includes an introduction by Walla, a biography of Laffoley by artist Steven Moskowitz, and essays by two scholars. Linda Dalrymple Henderson (University of Texas at Austin, Art History) is a renowned expert on Henri Bergson, Duchamp, the art/science juncture, and "the fourth dimension." Arielle Saiber (associate professor of Italian, Bowdoin College) analyzes one Laffoley's major works: Dante's 'Divine Comedy' Triptych.

Book excerpt: For centuries mankind has been exploring the nature of reality. The materialistic scientific worldview would have us believe that physically measurable phenomena are all that exist. Yet the answers to the key of reality go far beyond this mindset. This book explores the clues we have about the nature of reality, especially those aspects that cannot yet be proven. If we can understand the most baffling aspects of reality, then we will move closer toward understanding its ultimate cause and nature.

The inventory he accumulated and added to almost every day during this period was his attempt to study them: thousands of Polaroid and digital photographs, several leporello notebooks full of meticulously logged data and around 3,000 small spheres made of various kinds of wood.At the beginning of each day he also produced a 'Tagesbild' (picture of the day), numbered images of newspapers, groceries and measuring instruments arranged on the kitchen table, which were intended to record the respective cold ray exposure.English and German text.

Book excerpt: Beginning with staged portraits and self-portraits, John Brill's imagery becomes increasingly nebulous, increasingly concerned with how resonance can remain unaffected by the systematic removal of content. Taking scavenged pictures, some from real life and some from off the television screen, Brill works to distance the image from its origin through multiple printings, fragmentation, tonal shifts, and value reversals. In the end, the pictures derive more from mind than from matter, projections of Brill's own will, contrived of his own desire. John Brill was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1951. With a degree in physiological psychology, Brill steeped himself in the scientific method--the practice of discriminating fact from hypothesis--before committing himself in 1981 to art making. Since then, he has shown in galleries in New York, Atlanta, and Hoboken.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after the publication of A Dictionary of the Avant-Gardes, the distinguished critic and arts historian Richard Kostelanetz returns to his favorite subject for a third edition. Rewriting earlier entries, adding hundreds of new ones, Kostelanetz provides intelligence and information unavailable anywhere else, no less in print than online, about a wealth of subjects and individuals. Focused upon what is truly innovative and excellent, he ranges widely with insight and surprise, including appreciations of artistic athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Johan Cruyff, and the Harlem Globetrotters and such collective creations as Las Vegas and his native New York City. Continuing the traditions of cheeky high-style Dictionarysts, honoring Samuel Johnson and Nicolas Slonimsky (both with individual entries), Kostelanetz offers a "reference book" to be enjoyed not only in bits and chunks, but continuously as one of the dozen books someone would take if they planned to be stranded on a desert isle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This surreal fable, set in America's Old West, features a cast of notorious characters: The Crying Gun, who breaks into tears at the sight of his opponent; The Priest, who goes into gunfights giving his adversaries the last rites; and The Nihilistic Kid himself, Kim Carson, a homosexual gunslinger who, with a succession of beautiful sidekicks, sets out to challenge the morality of small-town America and fight for intergalactic freedom. Fantastical and humorous, The Place of Dead Roads continues William Burroughs' exploration of society's controlling forces - the State, the Church, women, literature, drugs - with a style that is utterly unique in twentieth-century literature.
