Book excerpt: Included in the present volume are selected pages from Volume I, II, and IV of the CRC Handbook of Microbiology. Data from Volume II has not been included (microbial products), which did not lend itself readily to the selection of a few pages. As it is the present volume includes information about the various groups of microorganisms, their cell walls, and their genetics. Data on amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids re included, together with diagrams of metabolic pathways and information on immunocompetent cells. General reference data include a glossary, statistical tables and other information that is hoped to be found useful by the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial Physiology and Metabolism focuses on research on bacteria, as well as metabolism of carbohydrates, fermentation, and oxidation of acids. The book first offers information on nutrition and growth of bacterial cultures, including requirements for growth, nutritional classification of bacteria, measurement of bacterial growth, and synchronous growth of bacterial cultures. The manuscript then considers the chemical composition of bacteria, oligosaccharide catabolism, and transport of sugars. The publication takes a look at the fermentation of sugars and aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates. Discussions focus on Embden-Meyerhof fermentations, miscellaneous pathways, and hexose, pentose, polyol, and hexuronic acid oxidation. The text also elaborates on oxidation of organic acids, electron transport, oxidation of hydrocarbons, and protein and amino acid catabolism. The text is a dependable reference for readers interested in bacterial physiology and metabolism.

Book excerpt: By 1960 the scientific community began observing an ever increasing explosion in the literature embrac ing the many facets of industrial microbiology. Many of the so-called traditional areas were being replaced by more modern provocative channels of endeavor. It was about this time that excellent review-type annual publications, such as Advances in Applied Microbiology, Progress in Industrial Microbiology and Developments in Industrial Microbiology emerged reporting the ex citing new work. It was soon, thereafter, that the Division of Microbial Chemistry shed its probationary status to become a bona fide unit of the American Chemi cal Society. A rash of new applied microbiological v vi FOREWORD textbooks arrived on the scene. The number of journals reporting the day-to-day scientific achievements also burgeoned. Early in my industrial career, I found it impera tive to devise a "workable" key to the ever increasing volume of literature that was emerging. This I com piled over the years on voluminous stacks of file cards which have in essence been reprinted here as "my" Guide to the Literature for the Industrial Microbiologist. The Guide has, indeed, served me well and through it, one can readily ascertain the state of the art of any of the many specialized subjects of industrial micro biology. Logically, one would first consult recent textbooks to obtain an overview of the subject being searched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Theoretical Biology, Volume 1 brings together the significant and timely theoretical developments in particular areas of biology. Topics range from chemical evolution and biological self-replicating systems to quantitative aspects of goal-seeking self-organizing systems. An essay on Erwin Schrödinger (1887-1961) and his work on genetics and quantum mechanics, as well as its influence on molecular biology, is also included. Comprised of five chapters, this volume first discusses chemical evolution in terms of organic geochemistry and prebiotic chemistry. Dehydration condensation reactions as well as the generation of order and new information are also considered. The next chapter deals with biological self-replicating systems and focuses on such topics as the minimum system capable of self-replication; the minimum system capable of self-replication in terms of the generalizations of terrestrial biology; and which biological systems most nearly approach this limiting behavior. A series of definitions that provide a framework for examining minimal reproducing systems are also presented. The final three chapters explore the quantitative aspects of goal-seeking self-organizing systems; statistical thermodynamics of polymerization and polymorphism of proteins; and the importance of models in theoretical biology. This book is intended for both biological and physical scientists.
