Book excerpt: Abstract: This study explores the perspectives of PhD scholars in India regarding the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 scholars from diverse academic disciplines to assess their awareness, perceived opportunities, challenges, and expectations concerning NEP 2020. The results indicate a significant gender disparity in awareness levels, with 35% of male participants reporting high awareness compared to 25% of females, while 40% of female scholars expressed a lack of awareness. Participants identified opportunities such as the promotion of research culture and interdisciplinary studies, but also highlighted challenges including lack of implementation strategies and inadequate research infrastructure. The study found that NEP 2020 is anticipated to positively impact research culture, inter-institutional collaborations, and research output, though concerns about inclusiveness and accessibility remain, particularly regarding gender equality. Recommendations for effective implementation include strengthening policy monitoring, enhancing faculty development programs, and bridging the gap between policy and practice. The insights from this study contribute to the existing literature and provide valuable guidance for policymakers to support the successful realization of NEP 2020's objectives, ultimately enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By drawing on quantitative data and qualitative analyses of five major national education policies implemented in India over the last 15 years, this comprehensive volume explores their impact on teacher quality and perceived effectiveness, explaining how this relates to variations in student performance. Responding to a national agenda to increase the quality of the Indian teacher workforce, Teacher Quality and Education Policy in India critically questions the application of human capital theory to Indian education policy. Chapters provide in-depth and strategically structured analyses of five national policies – including the recently approved National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 – to see how Indian policymakers use teacher quality as a driver and measurement of education and national economic development. Ultimately, the text offers evidence-based policy recommendations to improve teacher quality in India, suggesting that while all five policies have contributed significant frameworks and recommendations for teacher quality reform, they have failed to move beyond a symbolic function. Given its rigorous methodological approach, this book will be a valuable addition to the under-researched question of education policymaking in postcolonial contexts. It will be an indispensable resource not only for scholars working on policymaking in the Indian context, but also for those working at the intersection of education, teacher development, and policymaking in developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is an important reference work in understanding education systems in the South Asia region, their development trajectory, challenges and potential. The handbook includes the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries for discussion---Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka---while also considering countries such as Myanmar and the Maldives that have considerable shared history in the region. Such a comparative perspective is largely absent within the literature given the present paucity of intra-regional interaction. South Asian education systems are viewed primarily through a development lens in terms of inequalities, challenges and responses. However, the development of modern institutions of education and the challenges that it faces requires cultural and historical understanding of indigenous traditions as well as indigenous modern thinkers and education movements. Therefore, this encompassing referenc e work covers indigenous education traditions, formal education systems, including school and preschool education, higher and professional education, education financing systems and structures, teacher education systems, addressing huge linguistic and other diversities, and marginalization within the formal education system, and pedagogy and curricula. All the countries in this region have their own unique geographical, cultural, economic and political character and histories of interest and significance, and have responded to common issues such as overcoming the colonial legacy, language diversity, or girls’ education, or minority rights in education, in uniquely different ways. The sections therefore include country-specific perspectives as far as possible to highlight these issues. Internationally renowned specialists of South Asian education systems have contributed to this important reference work, making it an invaluable resource for researchers and students of education interested in South Asia.

Book excerpt: This book reports the results of a research project that investigated assessment methods aimed at supporting and improving inquiry-based approaches in European science, technology and mathematics (STM) education. The findings were used to influence policy makers with guidelines for ensuring that assessment enhances learning. The book provides insights about: - The concept of competence within the STM domains and its relevance for education - The conceptualisation and teaching of four key competences: scientific inquiry, mathematical problem-solving, design processes, and innovation. - Fundamental aspects of the two main purposes of assessment, formative and summative, the relations between the two purposes and ways of linking them. - The main challenges related to the uptake of formative assessment in daily teaching-learning practices in STM and specifically, the usability of formative on-the-fly dialogue, structured assessment dialogue, peer assessment and written teacher feedback. - The systemic support measures and tools teachers need in order to integrate formative assessment of student learning into their classroom practices and how it can conflict with summative assessment practices. - How research-based strategies for the formative use of assessment can be adapted to various European educational traditions to ensure their effective use and avoid undesirable consequences. - How relevant stakeholders can be invited to take co-ownership of research results and how a productive partnership between researchers, policy makers, and teachers can be established. - Concrete research vistas that are still needed in international assessment research.

Book excerpt: Diverse Perspectives on NEP 2020: A Comprehensive Review of Educational Reforms is an edited collection that examines the transformative changes introduced by India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The book gathers insights from prominent educationists, scholars, and policymakers to provide a well-rounded analysis of the policy’s impact on various levels of the education system. The volume covers critical aspects of the NEP, including curriculum restructuring, skill development, and teacher training. It emphasizes the NEP’s vision of moving away from rote learning towards a more holistic and experiential approach to education. The policy’s focus on foundational literacy, early childhood care, and vocational education is highlighted as essential for shaping a stronger and more inclusive education framework. The book also emphasizes the NEP’s focus on providing equitable education, especially for marginalized communities, aiming to reduce disparities in access and quality. A central theme is the integration of technology into education, where the NEP outlines pathways for incorporating digital learning to enhance educational outcomes. The policy’s commitment to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and multilingualism is explored, with discussions on how these reforms could help students thrive in a globally competitive environment while preserving India’s rich cultural diversity. The book also delves into the challenges of implementing the NEP, particularly in rural and under-resourced areas, where issues such as infrastructure gaps, teacher shortages, and inadequate resources pose significant hurdles. Contributors critically assess these challenges while also offering constructive solutions for making the reforms more effective. Ultimately, Diverse Perspectives on NEP 2020 is a valuable resource for those seeking a deep understanding of the policy’s far-reaching reforms. It offers a balanced mix of praise and critique, making it essential reading for educators, policymakers, and researchers interested in the future of education in India.

Book excerpt: This book pays attention to education in India as part of several overlapping stories developed along different axes: stories of dissent, contestations, appropriation and social action. It historicises the enterprise of formal education by paying attention to the numerous policy shifts. Further, it theorises the education policy discourse by analysing the ways in which education is increasingly being shaped by international/transnational knowledge production, actors and norms. Focusing on the cultural politics of education policy production, circulation and translation across different contexts, the book revisits some of the long-standing and unresolved debates on social reforms, justice, nationalism and mobility. Evolution of ideas such as mass education, national education, adult literacy and education through public-private-partnerships showcase the momentous shifts in education policy over the course of last century. Ideas, institutional and economic arrangements, administrative formulations and frameworks for implementation make frequent appearances in the cultural as well as political reading of education policy. In a departure from the traditional policy research, this work sees policy as socially and culturally constructed; connected to questions of power, context and struggle; and part of a number of processes at large.

Had it not been done at that time, the whole of Kashmir would have been an integral part of India today. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir would not have come into existence. Regrettably, it was never brought into the discussion as to why an untimely ceasefire was declared? What was the compulsion? In no history has it been written that the war-winning army declares a ceasefire at a time when a large part of its territory is occupied by foreign forces! Then the United Nations was approached on 1st January, 1948. This decision was also a personal decision of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was a big mistake; the country bore the brunt of it for years. —Amit Shah Union Home Minister We saw that the Leftist, elite society, the power system, the media had already established their narrative over the last several decades. These widely propagated narratives were the so-called truth. It was about our society, nationality, Ramjanmabhoomi, the inalienability and inevitability of Article 370 in Kashmir, social harmony, the role model of the country, the Western model of development, the imperative of English, etc. These were in relation to the beliefs and faith in so-called values which developed an inferiority complex about our history and past at the cost of our history and glorious knowledge tradition. —Anil Joshi Vice Chairman, Kendriya Hindi Shikshan Manda
