Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature Review from the year 2004 in the subject Medicine - Dentistry, Rajiv Gandhi University (A B shetty memorial institute of dental sciences), course: master of dental surgery, language: English, abstract: Team work is the essence for the success of any venture. A multidisciplinary approach is often necessary to treat and prevent dental problems in a patient. Orthodontics and periodontics are interrelated in a variety of ways. Orthodontic treatment is based on the principle that if prolonged pressure is applied to a tooth, tooth movement will occur as the bone around the tooth remodels. Bone is selectively removed in same areas and added in others. In essence, the tooth moves through the bone carrying its attachment apparatus with it, as the socket of the tooth migrates. Since the bony response is mediated by the periodontal ligament, tooth movement is primarily a periodontal ligament phenomenon. Orthodontic tooth movement, which is the basis of the orthodontic treatment, is possible because of the inherent nature of the periodontium. Many advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms involved in the process of tooth movement. However, there are many pathologic conditions affecting the periodontium which may affect these mechanisms of tooth movement and alter the end result of the orthodontic treatment. Similarly awareness of the pathologic changes or other undesirable changes which can occur in the periodontium as a result of ideal or less than ideal orthodontic procedures would help in better treatment procedure and management of the patients. Altered tooth position may affect periodontal health. Placement of orthodontic appliances causes microbiological changes as well as changes in the periodontium. With the success, in the recent decades of the fixed multi banded appliance, orthodontic treatment in adults has continuously grown in the United States and Europe. It is in connection with adult orthodontics that periodontal factors are becoming more important to the orthodontist. Orthodontics in the adult patient, specially the periodontally compromised patient requires adequate periodontal considerations to maintain the periodontium in a healthy condition during and after treatment. Minor periodontal surgery may be required to prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment. In addition, since periodontal diseases can secondarily cause malocclusion, very often orthodontic treatment would be an essential adjunct if the periodontal therapy is to succeed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients spend millions of dollars each year on diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease. A practicing dentist and expert witness with over twenty-five years of experience takes a behind-the-scenes look at the world of dentistry while teaching about the importance of good occlusion, how orthodontists have failed their patients, and the many shortfalls of periodontics. David DiBenedetto, DMD, claims that occlusion-how our teeth meet when our jaws are brought together-is of crucial importance to dental health. He also states that the field of orthodontics continues to concern itself about aesthetics, not on how jaws function, even though studies illustrate that orthodontic treatment does not increase the chances of keeping teeth later in life. Dr. DiBenedetto has made it his life's work to educate dental patients on the importance overall health plays in determining dental health and in what treatment works best for periodontal disease. You will learn: How periodontists and orthodontists think How the jaw works How to determine what you want from your orthodontist How you can keep your teeth and gums healthy Case histories, photographs, and diagrams are provided in this informative guidebook that will help explore your difficult dental questions in a logical manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque and is the most frequent reason for tooth loss in adults. It is now well-recognized that certain systemic diseases can affect the response of the periodontal tissues to plaque. Furthermore, certain types of systemic drug therapy can have an adverse effect on the gingival tissues, whereas other drugs with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions may be beneficial to the periodontal tissues. All of these problems are encountered in dental practice, especially those specializing in periodontology. The aim of this book is to document and discuss the effect of various systemic factors and drugs on the periodontal tissues and their response to plaque. This book is aimed at the periodontologist or dental practitioner with a specialty in periodontology. The book is also a useful reference for postgraduate students.

Periodontitis has become a global health burden in recent days. It is noteworthy that oral health is being considered as the mirror of general health and the study of oral-systemic health connections has advanced among scientists, clinicians, and the public as well. We wish the array of chapters that highlights the importance and impact of periodontal health could be a useful guide for the community of public, students, and clinicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for complex rehabilitative dental treatments in the adult patient and in developmental age raises the need for multidisciplinary therapies. The book is intended to trace the orthodontic-periodontal relationships, analyzing how orthodontic procedures can enhance the periodontal treatment plan, increasing its predictability, integrating it, interacting in the surgical approach and, at the same time, how Periodontology increases the potential and predictability of orthodontic treatments, synergically completing them. The Authors describe how orthodontic therapy can also be an aid to implant therapy both as a prosthetic-rehabilitative treatment plan and as a tissue and bone regenerative treatment, obtaining an enhancement of results that can only be achieved with a combined regenerative orthodontic-periodontal intervention. Supported by the recent international literature, all ortho-perio treatments, the Authors’ orthodontic and standardized surgical techniques, and biomechanics, are described with the help of photographs of clinical cases in vestibular and lingual orthodontic techniques.
