Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing a good life is almost always defined in material terms, typified by individuals (usually men) who have considerable wealth. But classed, gendered and racialized social supports enable the “self-made man.” Instead, this book turns to Indigenous knowledge about realizing a good life to explore how marginalized men endeavour to overcome systemic inequalities in their efforts to achieve wholeness, balance, connection, harmony and healing. Twenty-three men, most of whom are Indigenous, share their stories of this journey. For most, the pathway started in challenging circumstances — intergenerational trauma, disrupted families and child welfare interventions, racism and bullying, and physical and sexual abuse. Most coped with the pain through drugging and drinking or joining a street gang, setting many on a trajectory to jail. Caught in the criminal justice net, realizing a good life was even more daunting as their identities and life chances became barriers. Some of the men, however, have made great strides to realize a good life. They tell us how they got out of “the problem,” with insights on how to maintain sobriety, navigate systemic barriers, and forge connections and circles of support. Ultimately, it comes down to social supports — and caring. As one man put it, change happened when he “had to care for somebody else” in a way he wanted to be cared for.

Book excerpt: Society played a part in the death of my baby brother. The demand for perfection and what was deemed acceptable by our everyday standards helped mold a fragile frame in a young man's mind. The security and resolution I needed was never to be found within the realms of the everyday working world. I learned to reconcile with what you may unfairly call the "ills of society". I found not only resolve, but also harmony within the world, a world that all members of our populace are exposed to in their lives and is part of a culture, even if you chose to ignore it, is one we all live in. I'm not only lucky enough, but also privileged to have been welcomed and accepted in this world, and here their stories will show that this syndicate are of the same making of us all. For me and my brothers none of our heroes wore capes.

Book excerpt: Kevin Smith is full of sh*t, and in this Deluxe eBook he introduces each chapter with a sh*tastic video—that’s over 25 minutes of bonus sh*t talking! That Kevin Smith? The guy who did Clerks a million years ago? Didn’t they bounce his fat ass off a plane once? What could you possibly learn from the director of Cop Out? How about this: he changed film making forever when he was twenty-three, and since then, he’s done whatever the hell he wants. He makes movies, writes comics, owns a store, and now he’s built a podcasting empire with his friends and family, including a wife who’s way out of his league. So here’s some tough sh*t: Kevin Smith has cracked the code. Or, he’s just cracked. Tough Sh*t is the dirty business that Kevin has been digesting for 41 years and now, he’s ready to put it in your hands. Smear this sh*t all over yourself, because this is your blueprint (or brownprint) for success. Kev takes you through some big moments in his life to help you live your days in as Gretzky a fashion as you can: going where the puck is gonna be. Read all about how a zero like Smith managed to make ten movies with no discernible talent, and how when he had everything he thought he’d ever want, he decided to blow up his own career. Along the way, Kev shares stories about folks who inspired him (like George Carlin), folks who befuddled him (like Bruce Willis), and folks who let him jerk off onto their legs (like his beloved wife, Jen). So make this your daily reader. Hell, read it on the toilet if you want. Just make sure you grab the bowl and push, because you’re about to take one Tough Sh*t.

Book excerpt: Brightside: A Psychological Thriller Imagine a world where the person next to you—stranger, friend, lover—can creep into your mind and steal your most intimate thoughts. Now imagine you are the Thought Thief who is so greatly feared that your freedom and your life are threatened. Welcome to Brightside…you won’t be leaving. Brightside takes a unique twist on the psychic phenomena of telepathy. The fearful masses panic and create Brightside, a town that is essentially a prison. Protagonist Joe Nolan is one of the many Thought Thieves who have been rounded up and forced to live in Brightside, with little hope of ever leaving. Suspense builds as Joe finds himself on a mission to break free on his 100th day of captivity. "THAT’S WHY THEY’VE ROUNDED US UP, STUCK US IN THIS LITTLE TOWN. IT’S TO MAKE YOU FEEL SAFE. BUT THEY CAN’T KEEP US HERE FOREVER. IT’S DAY 100 AND IT’S ALL GONNA END. ONE WAY OR ANOTHER, I’M GETTING OUT OF BRIGHTSIDE." The reviews tell why Brightside should be your next read:"A well-written and well-executed story by first-time author Mark Tullius. It reads like a gritty, postmodernism novel similar to Blade Runner or A Scanner Darkly. Very interesting character development and plot elements, especially since the protagonist can't hide anything. A quick and fast read that keeps you glued to the pages." - eNovel Reviews “Brightside is a fiction novel about a believable "now" where a large population of the world are telepathic, or "Thought Thieves" as they call them in the book. The fearful and ignorant masses cause panic and mass arrests and institutionalization of these individuals, who are sent to a "island in the sky" called Brightside, which is basically a prison on top of a mountain. The book follows Joe and his journey through 100 days at Brightside, and the people he interacts with along the way.”Add Brightside to your bookshelf today!

Book excerpt: This is the story of my life from earliest memories to present day. I am male to female transsexual and as such have led a life of many ups and downs, most notably spending the best part of 50 years in total denial of my condition. I start my story on the day I told my wife why our marriage had been such a sham for the previous 5 years and admit that I am transsexual. The book progresses on two paths. The first describes my early childhood and development into an adult, getting married and having children. The second path describes my journey of transition following the disclosure to my wife. It details the process up to and including my Sex Reassignment Surgery in January 2010. It finishes with my receipt of a Gender Recognition Certificate and the issue of the new Birth Certificate with that all-important change of sex, which had been altered from the M on my original birth certificate to F on my new certificate thereby correcting the error at my birth and giving the book its appropriate title.
