Book excerpt: This qualitative study on teacher's perceptions of social studies and possible causes of marginalization of the content is intended to add to the existing research pertaining to social studies' education. The data from the study can further address gaps in the literature relating to issues that impact social studies. The study took place at a middle school in rural southwest Georgia. Semi-structured interviews were used in this qualitative study to gather information rich data from eight middle school social studies teachers. An interview protocol was developed and used during the interview phase of the study. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a qualitative software program, QDA Minor Lite. The study produced mixed results, yet the participants agree that there are issues impacting the teaching of social studies. The researcher suggested the need for further studies pertaining to issues that impact social studies.
