Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined the perceptions of regular education teachers, special education teachers, and administrators regarding the impact of inclusionary practices on the academic skills of elementary students with disabilities from four school districts in south central Pennsylvania. Information gained from this study yielded perceptions of teachers and administrators about including students with disabilities for reading and math in the general education classroom. The participants included regular education teachers, special education teachers, and administrators who included elementary principals and central office administrators from four school districts in two counties. Using an on-line survey, open-ended questions, and interviews, this study was guided by three research questions related to the perceptions of including students with disabilities in the general education setting for academic skills. The results showed that regular education teachers, special education teachers, and administrators had varied perceptions of students being successful academically in an inclusion setting. Four themes evolved from the study: the need for (a) a common vision and support system, (b) an increase of inclusion practices in the general education setting for students with disabilities in order to improve academic skills, (c) curriculum modifications, and (d) staff training.

Book excerpt: This thesis set out to determine if nondisabled children, who participate in inclusive educational settings, are affected by the presence of special needs children in the classroom. This study examined this issue by administering a Likert-type questionnaire to 33 elementary school teachers and 61 Grade 6 students. The participants were also asked for comments in order to expand on their opinions. It was found that, overall, inclusive settings have a positive effect on nondisabled students. However, negative effects were reported in terms of academic progress, and teacher time and attention. The findings suggest that the current policies regulating inclusive classrooms are not sufficient. Better regulations in terms of class size, number of children with disabilities, type of disabilities present, and amount of resource support are needed. Limitations of this study and questions for further research are also discussed.

Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

Four elementary general education teachers shared their perceptions via interviews. Elementary general education teachers identified common themes for general education students receiving instruction in an inclusive environment. Common positive academic themes included: peer tutors and modeling and expectations for learning is the same for all. Negative academic themes included: slows the pace of learning and misbehavior can cause stress and anxiety. Common positive social themes included: exposure and acceptance of disabilities, peer buddies, and increased empathy and social skills. Common negative social themes included: inappropriate behaviors can be disruptive. Elementary general education teachers identified common themes for special education students receiving instruction in an inclusive environment. Common positive academic themes included: increases achievement, held to higher standards, and provides more learning opportunities. Common negative academic themes included: one size does not fit all and parents are misinformed about performance on grade level.
