Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping exploration of the joys, hardships, and truths of Black students through intimate, honest dialogues and stunning photography, author of Heavy “A radical, reverential, and restorative document of community.”—Rebecca Bengal, author of Strange Hours: Photography, Memory, and the Lives of Artists When photographer Adraint Bereal graduated from the University of Texas, he self-published an impressive volume of portraits, personal statements, and interviews that explored UT's campus culture and offered an intimate look at the lives of Black students matriculating within a majority white space. Bereal's work was inspired by his first photo exhibition at the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin, entitled 1.7, that unearthed the experiences of the 925 Black men that made up just 1.7% of UT's total 52,000 student body. Now Bereal expands the scope of his original project and visits colleges nationwide, from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to predominantly white institutions to trade schools and more. Rather than dwelling on the monolith of trauma often associated with Black narratives, Bereal is dedicated to using honest dialogue to share stories of true joy and triumph amidst the hardships, prejudices, and internal struggles. Using an exciting and eclectic design approach to accompany the portraits and stories, each individual profile effectively conveys the interviewee's unique voice, tone, and background. The Black Yearbook reframes society's stereotypical perception of higher education by representing and celebrating the wide range of Black experiences on campuses.

Book excerpt: INSTANT #1 BESTSELLER FINALIST for the 2021 National Jewish Book Awards SHORTLISTED for the 2022 Rakuten Kobo Emerging Writer Prize A collection of funny personal essays from one of the writers of Superbad and Pineapple Express and one of the producers of The Disaster Artist, Neighbors, and The Boys. (All of these words have been added to help this book show up in people’s searches using the wonders of algorithmic technology. Thanks for bearing with us!) Hi! I’m Seth! I was asked to describe my book, Yearbook, for the inside flap (which is a gross phrase) and for websites and shit like that, so… here it goes!!! Yearbook is a collection of true stories that I desperately hope are just funny at worst, and life-changingly amazing at best. (I understand that it’s likely the former, which is a fancy “book” way of saying “the first one.”) I talk about my grandparents, doing stand-up comedy as a teenager, bar mitzvahs, and Jewish summer camp, and tell way more stories about doing drugs than my mother would like. I also talk about some of my adventures in Los Angeles, and surely say things about other famous people that will create a wildly awkward conversation for me at a party one day. I hope you enjoy the book should you buy it, and if you don’t enjoy it, I’m sorry. If you ever see me on the street and explain the situation, I’ll do my best to make it up to you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of two parts: “The Law of Peoples,” a major reworking of a much shorter article by the same name published in 1993, and the essay “The Idea of Public Reason Revisited,” first published in 1997. Taken together, they are the culmination of more than fifty years of reflection on liberalism and on some of the most pressing problems of our times by John Rawls. “The Law of Peoples” extends the idea of a social contract to the Society of Peoples and lays out the general principles that can and should be accepted by both liberal and non-liberal societies as the standard for regulating their behavior toward one another. In particular, it draws a crucial distinction between basic human rights and the rights of each citizen of a liberal constitutional democracy. It explores the terms under which such a society may appropriately wage war against an “outlaw society” and discusses the moral grounds for rendering assistance to non-liberal societies burdened by unfavorable political and economic conditions. “The Idea of Public Reason Revisited” explains why the constraints of public reason, a concept first discussed in Political Liberalism (1993), are ones that holders of both religious and non-religious comprehensive views can reasonably endorse. It is Rawls’s most detailed account of how a modern constitutional democracy, based on a liberal political conception, could and would be viewed as legitimate by reasonable citizens who on religious, philosophical, or moral grounds do not themselves accept a liberal comprehensive doctrine—such as that of Kant, or Mill, or Rawls’s own “Justice as Fairness,” presented in A Theory of Justice (1971).

Book excerpt: As COVID-19 swept across the globe with merciless force, it was working people who kept the world from falling apart. Deemed "essential" by a system that has shown just how much it needs our labor but has no concern for our lives, workers sacrificed--and many were sacrificed--to keep us fed, to keep our shelves stocked, to keep our hospitals and transit running, to care for our loved ones, and so much more. But when we look back at this particular moment, when we try to write these days into history for ourselves and for future generations, whose voices will go on the record? Whose stories will be remembered? In late 2020 and early 2021, at what was then the height of the pandemic, Maximillian Alvarez conducted a series of intimate interviews with workers of all stripes, from all around the US--from Kyle, a sheet metal worker in Kentucky; to Mx. Pucks, a burlesque performer and producer in Seattle; to Nick, a gravedigger in New Jersey. As he does in his widely celebrated podcast, Working People, Alvarez spoke with them about their lives, their work, and their experiences living through a year when the world itself seemed to break apart. Those conversations, documented in these pages, are at times meandering, sometimes funny or philosophical, occasionally punctured by pain so deep that it hurts to read them. Filled with stories of struggle and strength, fear and loss, love and rage, The Work of Living is a deeply human history of one of the defining events of the 21st century told by the people who lived it.

Created by the members themselves in 1991, the UNPO provides a platform for those nations, peoples and minorities not represented in established international forums such as the United Nations. The mission of the organization is to assist its members in advancing their interests effectively through nonviolent means, including diplomacy, use of the UN and other international procedures for the protection of human rights, the exploration of legal options in defending their rights and the development of public awareness and opinion. Book excerpt: Now in its second year of annual publication, the UNPO Yearbook contains important information about the current state of affairs of the 50 Members of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO). UNPO was created in 1991, by the members themselves, in order to provide a platform for those nations, minorities and peoples who are not represented in established international forums such as the United Nations. The mission of UNPO is to assist these people to advance their interests effectively through non-violent means, including diplomacy, through the use of the United Nations and other international procedures for the protection of human rights, through development of public opinion and through the exploration of legal options to defend their rights. The number of UNPO Members has grown rapidly since its founding and today the 50 Members represent over 100 million people. The UNPO Yearbook provides a comprehensive overview of the 1996 activities of UNPO, a review of the history and current positions of UNPO Members, a selection of key UNPO documents and annual information, as well as 1996 Conference and Mission Reports. An essential reference work for anyone involved in current international affairs, the UNPO Yearbook is the only publication which gives access to the material of the UNPO and its Members. The UNPO Yearbook for 1996 represents a considerable body of information providing a record of the changes and developments relating to UNPO and to the activities of its Members during the past year.
