This book was released on 2022-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Connecticut Yankees began to settle the Wyoming Valley in the 1760s, both the local Pennsylvanians and the powerful native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) strenuously objected. The Connecticut Colony and William Penn had been granted the same land by King Charles II of England, resulting in the instigation of the Yankee-Pennamite Wars. In 1788, during ongoing conflict, a band of young Yankee ruffians abducted Pennsylvania official Timothy Pickering, holding him hostage for nineteen days. Some kidnappers were prosecuted, and several fled to New York's Finger Lakes as the political incident motivated state leaders to resolve the fighting. Bloody skirmishes, the American Revolution and the Sullivan campaign to destroy the Iroquois all formed the backdrop to the territorial dispute. Author Kathleen A. Earle covers the early history of colonial life, war and frontier justice in the Wyoming Valley.
Book Synopsis Pennsylvania Land Wars with Connecticut and Virginia by : Don Corbly
Download or read book Pennsylvania Land Wars with Connecticut and Virginia written by Don Corbly and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the land wars Pennsylvania found itself embroiled in during the latter half of the 18th Century. The wars stemmed from the ambiguous Charters that established the the Colonies of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Virginia. Charles II created the conflict between Pennsylvania and Connecticut by the overlapping of the boundaries of the land he granted to each colony. Similarly, the land granted to Pennsylvania was contested by Virginia. But Virginia could have contested nearly any Colony's land grant. Virginia's grant from James I included most of present-day United States, northern Mexico, and most of western Canada. These armed conflicts were settled only by the first Congress established by the newly formed United States Constitution in 1787, when it ruled in Pennsylvania's favor. This book is purchased at the lowest cost through Lulu.com.
Download or read book Wild Yankees written by Paul B. Moyer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley was truly a dark and bloody ground, the site of murders, massacres, and pitched battles. The valley's turbulent history was the product of a bitter contest over property and power known as the Wyoming controversy. This dispute, which raged between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, intersected with conflicts between whites and native peoples over land, a jurisdictional contest between Pennsylvania and Connecticut, violent contention over property among settlers and land speculators, and the social tumult of the American Revolution. In its later stages, the controversy pitted Pennsylvania and its settlers and speculators against "Wild Yankees"—frontier insurgents from New England who contested the state's authority and soil rights. In Wild Yankees, Paul B. Moyer argues that a struggle for personal independence waged by thousands of ordinary settlers lay at the root of conflict in northeast Pennsylvania and across the revolutionary-era frontier. The concept and pursuit of independence was not limited to actual war or high politics; it also resonated with ordinary people, such as the Wild Yankees, who pursued their own struggles for autonomy. This battle for independence drew settlers into contention with native peoples, wealthy speculators, governments, and each other over land, the shape of America's postindependence social order, and the meaning of the Revolution. With vivid descriptions of the various levels of this conflict, Moyer shows that the Wyoming controversy illuminates settlement, the daily lives of settlers, and agrarian unrest along the early American frontier.

Book Synopsis The Vietnam War Trilogy by : John M. Del Vecchio
Download or read book The Vietnam War Trilogy written by John M. Del Vecchio and published by Warriors Publishing Group. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 1879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three classic novels by John M. Del Vecchio about Vietnam, Cambodia, and the aftermath of war. A classic combat novel and National Book Award finalist, The 13th Valley follows the terrifying Vietnam combat experiences of James Chelini, a telephone-systems installer who finds himself an infantryman in the North Vietnamese Army–infested mountains of the I Corps Tactical Zone. Spiraling deeper and deeper into a world of conflict and darkness, this harrowing account plunges Chelini into jungle warfare and traces his evolution from semi-pacifist to all-out, combat-crazed soldier. The seminal novel on the Vietnam experience, The 13th Valley is a classic that illuminates the war in Southeast Asia like no other book. Some reviewers have called For the Sake of All Living Things the most terrifying book they have ever read. This saga follows a rural Cambodian family—father Chhoun; his beautiful daughter, Vathana; and his young son, Samnang, who becomes the Khmer Rouge yothea Met Nang—from the mid-sixties through the escalation of the civil war, into the horrors of the holocaust, and finally to the country’s quest for rebirth. Documenting their story is American Special Forces Captain John Sullivan who served with the Military Equipment Delivery Team, and who has fallen in love with Vathana. Carry Me Home brings the troops back to America—a nation confused and divided by the wars in Southeast Asia. In this poignant epic, Del Vecchio transports a group of soldiers to their final battlefield: the home front. High Meadow Farm, in the fertile hill country of central Pennsylvania, becomes their salvation. In Vietnam they had been brothers in arms. Now, in the face of personal tragedy and bureaucratic deception, they create an even deeper allegiance—one of the spirit and of the land. This is the remarkable story of the veterans’ struggle to find one another and themselves. In its scope, breadth, and brilliance, Carry Me Home is much more than a novel about Vietnam vets; it is a testament to history and hope, to hometowns and homecomings, to love and loss, and to faith and family. It is an inspiring and unforgettable novel about America itself.

Book Synopsis The Delaware River Story by : Lee Hartman
Download or read book The Delaware River Story written by Lee Hartman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware River flows some 330 miles from its headwaters near Hancock, New York, to the mouth of the Delaware Bay. It is the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi and one of America’s most important rivers. Not only is it the primary water supply for New York City, but it provides clean drinking water to every home within a 150-mile radius. When the reservoirs were built on the East and West Branches, they disrupted the natural flows and turned nature upside down. The once-warm waterway now has cooler flows creating a self-sustaining wild trout population and establishing a modern-day fishing and boating industry to fuel the economy of the Upper Delaware River communities. Protecting this important waterway—the clean drinking water, quality fishery, and recreational opportunities—has been a daunting task. There are many heroes, both living and dead, who have labored to keep its flows clean, healthy, and prosperous over the past four centuries. This book is about the individuals and organizations, who have, and are, sacrificing their time and effort to keep the Delaware River flowing free and clear without detriment to its flora and fauna. Focusing on both the history and the author’s personal story in helping preserve the fishery, this book gives readers a colorful and unique perspective of what it’s like to fish the Delaware and how important it is to protect the cold-water fishery that is so valuable to the economy of the region.
