Yet that he was also a landscapist is hardly known. Mrs. Charles F. Williams has just lent the Museum alandscape by West of great charm and charac.ter It appears'to be late afternoon or early evening in the picture, that time of day when the sun is low and the shadows are long. From a rift in the clouds' a saffron glow lights up' the sky. It is such a sky as Claude Lorrain loved to paint. Below are distant woods, and nearer at hand a country road, a stream and a great brick arched bridge. At the left, in the foreground, across a ford, sheep are being driven by a 'shepherd. At the right, in the shadow of the bridge, On the bank of the stream, is a picnic party, composed of a man, a woman, two children and a dog. While in the middle of the picture, racing over the bridge, is a coach filled with a gay company, and drawn by four white horses. The middle knight wears a rose-lavender colored hauberk, with white chain mail on his legs. The two side knights are clad in white with ruby hose and ruby belts about their waists. It is to be noticed that the knight on the right has his sword in his ruby scabbard, for, unlike the others, he wields an axe. In other respects the coloring of the panel is like the other, with. A blue background and ruby border, but there appear to be more restored portions. Probably but half of this medallion has its original glass. The trees are stranger than those of the first; rose lavender and pale green, curling and twisting, they resemble the stems of vines. It is even more difficult to tell What these two subjects represent, than to date them. Generally, glass of this period depicts some Bib lical story. They must have been minor parts of a large window, full of medallions, and these tell only part of a story. These knights may represent Christian champions combatting the forces of heathendom, symbolized _as a wilderness of trees; they may themselves be returned Crusaders, the Teutonic Knights, who drove back the un-christian hordes of Northeastern Germany in the thirteenth century. A window is formed of bits of colored glass which are cut into the shapes of faces, or figures, or robes, or canopies, or whatever you want and whatever the subject demands; then features are painted on the faces, folds on the robes, and so forth - not with color, but merely with brown shading; then, when this shading has been burnt into the glass in a kiln, the pieces are put together into a picture by means of grooved strips of lead, into which they fit (stained Glass Work. C. W. Whall, p. The paint, spoken of above, consists of a brown pigment ground up with powdered soft glass (or equivalent silicate) which, when the glass is fired, fuses and becomes part and parcel of it. The powder is first mixed with gum so that it can be painted on the glass with an ordinary brush. This paint is practically Opaque, and must not be confused with the stain and enamels of later centuries. In the rare cases where it is used thin it became a muddy, brown smear.
