Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pedagogy of College Ethics To be sure many colleges already have courses in hygiene and where such is the case ethics is relieved of a part of what would otherwise be its burden. But the plea here is that the hygiene taught must be with a moral significance. If only the scientific facts are. Given in the hygiene course, then the ethics must build upon it, make the moral applications and inspire to practice in a way which the bare scientific teaching may not have attained. There need be no danger of wasteful repetition. The two courses, where they exist, may supple ment each other and make each the more effective. From this point of attack ethics becomes frankly biological. Yet it leads to no crass materialism, but rather, as Sutherland has Shown, to a most inspiring comprehension of the fullness and grandeur Of morality. By leading back to the biological, it leads out to the cosmological aspect which arouses that great fundamental religious interest, aroused originally by reverence for nature. Fear of the bioligical trend reverberates the old theology which condemned the esh. The modern esteems the body and gives it its rightful place; and thus a biological ethics comes into' harmony with the modern Chris tian concept of life. In many of these Colleges Ethics is a professional subject, and the students naturally expect that it will be treated in such a way as to reveal its bearing on the work which they will have to do in the education of the young'. In this book it has been my aim to drive a few main lines through ethical theory, and to indicate the application of moral principles to the actual life of the school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True Pedagogics and False Ethics: Morality Cannot Be Taught Without Religion So much for the original meaning of words, from which it is clear that pedagogy, pedagogics are very well chosen to indicate what ought to belong to both the earlier and to the academic training in general and can stand with full propriety for what we may mean by the science and the art of educa tion. Unfortunately, the difficulty begins when we go on to consider what is meant by education. For, the word, education, is very widely taken to mean only a part of what it really means. The laws of conduct, the rules for the building and establishment of character are often assigned a minor place, or are treated as a negligible quantity, in the science of pedagogics as it is understood and taught and applied amongst us to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Value of a Study of Ethics: An Inaugural Lecture Then, as everyone knows, the spirit of our age is scientific. The characteristic of Science is patient, thorough, systematic enquiry. Science needs no apology for its existence. It has established itself by doing its work, thus enforcing a lesson on the value of acting out our convictions if we wish others to believe in them. The influence of scientific thought and literature is felt by the student before he enters the university, and no one can take a university training without becoming more or less familiar with scientific methods. Since Bacon wrote his Instauration of the Sciences and exposed the various z'a'ols that hinder the attainment of truth, authority has been discredited in science. One of the first things a student of science learns to do is to mistrust his previous opinions. In many enquiries they appear to him as mere prejudices, preventing him from seeing the truth and giving an impartial decision. We started with the assumption that we were to exclude all critical investigation of Ethics, and employ only the dogmatic method. But, as we have seen, the other influences that we have enumerated all con cur in destroying the student's respect for the dogmatic method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pedagogical Chairs in Colleges and Universities The last argument derives additional strength from the peculiar stage of education upon which the foremost nations and countries have now entered. Education has at last reached the reflective or scientific stage. Throwing off the clutch of the empiricist, she has ascended to her long-vacant seat in the family of sciences. Evidences of this are the increased attention paid to education by text-writers on psychology and ethics, the later pedagogical literature, and the more systematic and rational methods of instruction in schools, and the rapidly-increasing facilities for teaching educational science. Thus the very existence of the chair is a proof of its usefulness and its necessity. On this ground alone - indeed, on the narrower ground of eu dowing research alone - the chair can be fully vindicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethical and Moral, Instruction in Schools The problem of moral education is an old one, older indeed than schools. The obligation for its solution has therefore rested upon the shoulders of others besides schoolmasters every responsi ble class in the community has borne a share of the burden. That our present discussion should emphasize schools and school-teaching merely indicates the special form which the problem takes in our time. In no way does it denote that moral education is wholly the business of the school, or that it is the school's whole business. It simply suggests that there is an increasing con scious dependence upon the school as a moulder of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Training of the Young-Pedagogical Principles and Methods, And, What an Ethical Culture Society if For I have been interested in the Ethical Society, not only on account Of the basis it offers, but the common meeting ground which it gives to those of different beliefs, not only because it brings ethics thus to the front, but because the Ethical Society as an association represents the ear nest endeavor On the part Of individuals to combine on behalf Of the interests that are most precious and impera tive. And I take it that these interests which have been at work in the organization and that have drawn me per sonally to a closer association with the Ethical move ment, are those which have animated the efforts of your leaders, here and elsewhere. An Ethical Society is not primarily a protest against other religious organizations. It is not born Of any failure to appreciate the enormous service rendered to the world by every institution that in any way seeks to conserve the ethical interests Of hu manity. There are few associated with the Ethical move ment, I take it, who do not realize the debt of the world to every phase of organized religion, every great system which has given its great ethical enunciations and exer cised an influence towards a larger and nobler relation ship Oi men and men. The Ethical Culture movement represents an endeavor to gather together the best in fluences and teachings, the highest reaches Of thought and imagination which the world has anywhere and every where expressed, in order that they may be brought to a focus upon the conditions of our own time and the prob lems of our personal lives. And it is significant that there184 what AN ethical culture society IS for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Ethics: And Other Essays on Educational Subjects Hat the actions of the individual often fall short of his ideals is a barren truism, but that the ethical standard of a community is generally lower than that of the individuals who compose it is a fact which may not be so easily recognized. And yet we habitually observe that men in the mass are capable of deeds at which they would severally shrink. Whether it be in the great game of nations, where diplomacy and skill are often the merest euphemisms for trickery and deceit, or on the humbler stage of party warfare, where insincerity is often the readiest weapon, we see how frequently the man in private life is superior to the same man in his capacity as member of a party, or a society, or a state. This is particularly true in the case of a community of boys. The force of example and the influence of tradition are stronger in childhood than at a more.
