Book Synopsis The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia by : Nathan L. Vanderford
Download or read book The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia written by Nathan L. Vanderford and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky has more cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths than any other state in the nation, and most of these cases are concentrated in the fifty-four counties that constitute the Appalachian region of the commonwealth. These high rankings can be attributed to factors such as elevated smoking rates, unhealthy eating habits, lower levels of education, and limited access to health care. What is lost in the statistics is just how life-changing cancer can be—something that editors Nathan L. Vanderford, Lauren Hudson, and Chris Prichard have endeavored to address. The Cancer Crisis in Appalachia features essays written by a group of twenty high school and five undergraduate students, all of whom are residents of Kentucky's Appalachian region and are participants in the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center's Appalachian Career Training in Oncology (ACTION) program, which is funded by the National Cancer Institute's Youth Enjoy Science Program. These authentic and candid student essays detail the effects of cancer diagnoses and deaths on individuals, families, friends, and communities, and proclaim these cases as more than nameless statistics. The authors shed light on personal cancer stories in hopes of inspiring readers to avoid cancer-risk behaviors, get involved with cancer-prevention initiatives, give generously, and uplift cancer patients and their loved ones.

Book Synopsis The Allen Family of Eastern Kentucky by :

Book excerpt: "We are pleased to present to you a collection of Allen family genealogy. We have included primarily the families of William Allen and Caty Gearheart, Richard Allen and Edy Williams, George Allen and Cynthia Patton, James Allen and Nancy Louise Roberts, Samuel Patton Sr. and Elizabeth Allen, Isaac E. Allen and 1st wife Frances E. Pettit and 2nd wife Margaret Poplett ... Settlement of the Big Sandy, Licking and Kentucky River valleys was happening by 1800. By tracing the Allen generation on back before this date, we find that they lived in Virginia or North Carolina. By 1800 many of them began their westward movement into eastern Kentucky ... again we are reminded of the different 'sets' of Allens, such as the Floyd County set, the Breathitt County set, or the Morgan County- White Oak set; however it is believed but not fully proven that all the so-called 'sets' are really just branches of one family tree with a progenitor yet unproven"--Foreword, p. Download or read book Life Goes Better with Chocolate Gravy written by Norma Patrick Seto and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her tiny red rocker turned upside down atop a pile of furniture packed in a mule-drawn wagon, little Norma Seto moved with her family to Turkey Branch in Magoffin County Kentucky in preparation for another year of sharecropping a small farm. Experiencing early life in houses without indoor plumbing or electricity, Norma first enjoyed the taste of a soda pop cooled in a nearby creek, the frustration of finding the dipper frozen in a bucket of water in an effort to relieve her thirst in the middle of the night, and the enjoyment of a flavorful dish of poke greens. In a collection of true stories of those who lived in eastern Kentucky mostly during the forties, fifties, and sixties, Seto chronicles the experiences of not just her family but also the faith, laughter, sadness, and celebrations of those around them. While focusing on the strength and ingenuity that these Kentuckians relied on to overcome hardship, Seto leads others back to a time when a good work ethic was embraced, a strong faith in God was encouraged, and the simple gifts in life were appreciated. “Through her heartwarming, humorous, and entertaining memoir of growing up in the hills of eastern Kentucky, Norma invites us to meet colorful characters who lived life the way it was meant to be lived – simply and to the fullest.” —Dr. Jeffrey F. Neal, Director, Cooperative Education Program, Clemson University

Book Synopsis Night Comes To The Cumberlands: A Biography Of A Depressed Area by : Harry M. Claudill
Download or read book Night Comes To The Cumberlands: A Biography Of A Depressed Area written by Harry M. Claudill and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “At the time it was first published in 1962, it framed such an urgent appeal to the American conscience that it actually prompted the creation of the Appalachian Regional Commission, an agency that has pumped millions of dollars into Appalachia. Caudill’s study begins in the violence of the Indian wars and ends in the economic despair of the 1950s and 1960s. Two hundred years ago, the Cumberland Plateau was a land of great promise. Its deep, twisting valleys contained rich bottomlands. The surrounding mountains were teeming with game and covered with valuable timber. The people who came into this land scratched out a living by farming, hunting, and making all the things they need-including whiskey. The quality of life in Appalachia declined during the Civil War and Appalachia remained “in a bad way” for the next century. By the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, Appalachia had become an island of poverty in a national sea of plenty and prosperity. Caudill’s book alerted the mainstream world to our problems and their causes. Since then the ARC has provided millions of dollars to strengthen the brick and mortar infrastructure of Appalachia and to help us recover from a century of economic problems that had greatly undermined our quality of life.”-Print ed.
Book Synopsis The Kentucky Legislature by : Malcolm E. Jewell
Download or read book The Kentucky Legislature written by Malcolm E. Jewell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago the Kentucky General Assembly was one of the least powerful and least effective legislatures in the country, almost entirely dominated by the governor. Over the past two decades the legislature has changed—gradually and with little public attention—into a far more powerful, professional, and independent body. This book is a study of that process of change: its causes, the obstacles encountered, and the political and policy consequences. It is a study of changing relationships between governor and legislature, caused in part by less aggressive gubernatorial leadership and in part by the growing assertion of legislative independence. It is also a study of the men and women who initiated change and who play major roles in the legislature today. One important area of change has been in the kinds of persons elected to the legislature. Today's Kentucky legislators are more professional in their approach to legislative service, serve longer tenures, and are likely to be committed to long-term political careers. They work harder to become known in their districts, and they devote more time to constituency service. In preparing this study, Malcolm E. Jewell and Penny M. Miller interviewed and sent questionnaires to many past and present members of the Kentucky legislature, as well as examining election returns, roll call votes, and committee records. They also traced developments since the 1960s to provide historical perspective. The Kentucky General Assembly is not a "typical" legislature. It is less professional and meets less frequently than those in most states. But trends in the Kentucky legislature are typical of those in other states, and this book puts the changes in Kentucky into national perspective.
