Before long, he falls in love with the people of the Old Order Mennonite community, accepts a job, and settles into the area. He is touched by the good people and their strong faith, even though he still has a lingering dispute with God. Most of all, he is fond of Anna. The more he gets to know her, the more he falls in love with her. But Anna is not happy in Piney Meadows. The Mennonite community is changing, but it's not changing fast enough for her. She longs to move to Minneapolis to get a job, make her way in the world, and find herself. Chad doesn't want her to go, but Anna can only see the freedom she imagines she will get in the big city. When she's ready to leave he contemplates leaving with her, but a personal crisis shakes Chad to his core. Feeling let down by everyone—including God—Chad wonders if Anna will now desert him too.

Book excerpt: The Narrow Path is a story about a couple who must face their differences and learn to work together as they look toward a lifetime of love. Miranda Klassen's Mennonite church is big and modern and she loves the mixture of faith, action, and activity. But in order to follow her dream she moves across the country to a small town to organize the 75th anniversary celebration of an Old Order Mennonite church. Ted Wiebe has been assigned to assist and guide Miranda, feeling good that his church has chosen another Mennonite. But except for sharing the same basic faith and denomination, their churches have nothing else in common. His church embraces old-style roots, so Ted expects to find someone similar at the airport: a woman who never wears pants, no body piercing (including pierced ears), no makeup, and wearing a head covering as a sign of modesty, someone else who lives in accordance with old-fashioned values. But the woman who acknowledges him is wearing unreasonably high and outlandishly expensive shoes, denim jeans, and makeup, including bright red lipstick. As she gets off the plane she's fiddling with an iPod and yapping on the cell phone. When Miranda enters Ted's church and community she feels like she's been transported back into Little House On The Prairie. Ted is supposed to help Miranda fit in, and Miranda is supposed to help his church reach out into the community. When it's time to start planning and organizing for the celebration, then the fun really begins.

The whirling tornado that cuts down the life she's built drops Jessie onto the sandy beach of Malibu with a thud, penniless and alone. As Jessie tries to rebuild, she realizes she can't move on, not without answers. Reluctantly, Jessie turns to beach bum/private investigator Danny Callahan for help. But is she staking her future success and happiness . . . on a ring and a prayer?

They watch the Macy’s Christmas parade, admire the decorated store windows, skate at the Rockefeller Center rink and— Annie’s favorite—get a glimpse of a writer’s life while visiting the New York Times building. But others aren’t as thrilled with Annie’s lure to the Big Apple. Aaron has long been attracted to Annie and is sure he’s in love. As he watches her engage in big city life, he grows concerned that she won’t want to return to their quieter life. Will Annie follow Aaron back home? Or stay and pursue her dreams? Competing for her attention, Aaron sets out to show Annie that Christmas isn’t about the glitz and glamour, but about family, love, and the birth of Jesus.

Stranded in Sarasota until his daughter recovers, Jacob grows increasingly wary of events that unfold in his unfamiliar surroundings—including the strange curiosity of Englischer Natalie Bennett. Natalie never thought her circus career as an aerial silks artist would end with a blown-out knee at the age of 25. She also never knew her late mother had a secret—that she was once Amish. When Natalie meets the Millers at the Sarasota hospital, she is attracted to their warm hospitality and simple ways—and soon wonders if they can help her find her mother's family. As Jacob and Natalie fall in love, their worlds collide. Will their differences tear them apart? Or will their love be strong enough to blend their clashing cultures?

When she catches her mother in the arms of her former high school principal, Priscilla can’t get out of town fast enough. Eager to get back to her more comfortable life, Priscilla runs head on into an ultimatum: Tim tells her they’re not getting any younger—as if she has to be reminded.

Book excerpt: In the late 1880’s, Dave Smith finds work at a freight line in a remote mining town as he pursues the reason why renegade Cheyenne chief, Yellow Band, is stealing assay rock samples; and why vindictive Sheriff Gus Tern turns the entire town against him. One of the surprising finds is none other than Andee Piper who now teaches at a local School for Girls. Five years earlier, Dave encounters the teenage irrepressible tom-boy, finds she is now all grown up, and regards Dave in an entire different manner, renewing her efforts toward captivating him. Floyd Wilkins also has notions of exclusive intentions on Andee which soon creates a clash. Maxwell Perkins, a successful mine owner and operator, also sees Andee’s unique personality as fascinating. This creates a three way conflict is one which Dave would sooner evade than confront. A near fatal Indian holdup while Dave is driving the freight run points toward his being set up to take the blame for the incident. Instead he tracks the bunch, and after a shootout recovers the wagon. He captures the prize, renegade Chief Yellow Band who does not remain captive long. In a later attack, Dave stands off the horde long enough to survive. Dave pursues the fleeing attackers into the mountains on a rigorous track. Joined by Floyd Wilkins, who grimly rescues Dave from his own folly, the two man hunt becomes a trial of wits against wily Yellow Band. Unable to identify who has been paying off Yellow Band, Dave investigates the gold mines owners and slowly begins to unravel the devious plot to high-grade a mine. Now immersed in identifying the devious scheming behind a killer’s organization, Dave doggedly pursues leads that eventually strike pay-dirt. The climax requires all of Dave’s grit, honesty, and resolute determination to stay alive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep within the heart of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, the Piney people have built a vibrant culture and industry from working the natural landscape around them. Foraging skills learned from the local Lenapes were passed down through generations of Piney families who gathered many of the same wild floral products that became staples of the Philadelphia and New York dried flower markets. Important figures such as John Richardson have sought to lift the Pineys from rural poverty by recording and marketing their craftsmanship. As the state government sought to preserve the Pine Barrens and develop the region, Piney culture was frequently threatened and stigmatized. Author and advocate William J. Lewis charts the history of the Pineys, what being a Piney means today and their legacy among the beauty of the Pine Barrens.
