Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public No More examines the quickly changing environment within higher education, including the permanent decline in state support for public universities. This book raises the question of how research universities can survive with reduced subsidies and increased competition from both non-profit and growing for-profit institutions. Authors Gary C. Fethke and Andrew J. Policano, both longtime university administrators, offer a strategic framework for determining how tuition and access should be set and how universities should decide on quality and program scope. Throughout the text, real-world examples illustrate successful and unsuccessful adoptions of the authors' proposals. Leadership within public higher education, policymakers, and researchers alike will find Public No More to be a sober and well-grounded guide to what lies ahead for universities across the nation.

Book excerpt: This book is for the people who lead our companies. Our world suffered a staggering blow. We will recover. Many of our companies are still suffering. Some of them will not recover. We’re in a time of disruption. A company’s culture will play a big part in managing through this disruption. Senior leaders must establish a clear purpose, a strong set of core values, and a plan to translate strategy into action. Companies will be seeking to transform, to become more efficient and resilient. Most attempts to do so fail. They fail because we try to solve the wrong problem with the wrong system. We attempt to change the way people act. But to achieve sustained improvement, we must focus on changing the way they think. Over the last thirty years, we’ve experimented with Lean, Six Sigma, and other improvement initiatives. Each failed to move beyond average performance and sustain transformational improvement. Average then became a learned behavior. To move forward, we must unlearn some things. We must change our problem definition and our defined systems. And we can do this by framing the problem through the lens of Operational Excellence.

Book excerpt: The "Super Excellence" title provides a rich menu of solutions and ideas on how to drive excellence in its new meaning in the context of the digital revolution and how to pave the way for a path that can lead to sustainable superior performance. The start of the end of excellence as we know itThe quality profession has continued to take the view that measuring up against criteria of excellence that were set thirty years ago is a valid argument. Further, it continues to be considered a mindset that is powerful enough to induce the practice of quality and support the nudging, growth and development of organisations aspiring to become excellent, and also to create elite categories of role model organisations that can claim to have achieved dominant positions in the practice of excellence as we know it. The reality, however, demonstrates that the world around us has changed enormously and all of the industries that serve the world with products and services have either been disrupted by the introduction of digital technology, or in many cases, have disrupted the innovative thinking that drives specific sectors, in order to create new momentum, new high levels of performance. If one looks, for instance, at the list of most admired companies in the world in 2017 (Fortune List 2017), none of the top ten organisations are associated with either using the principles of excellence via the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award or the European Quality Award, and none have been previous winners of these prestigious awards. Starting, for instance, with Apple in the computer industry, they are admired for their constant disruptiveness and the power of their innovative thinking in producing generations of sophisticated and desired innovations. Amazon, which was classified as the second most admired company in 2017 and represents top-level internet services and retailing, has also continued to pioneer with its disruptive thinking in the fields of distribution and retailing, using the power of technology and, more and more, using digital tools for reaching out to the global consumer society. Starbucks, classified as the third most admired company, represents the food services sector and is recognised for its consumer experience supremacy. Disney, as a similar example, has been a pioneer in the field of entertainment with augmented reality and theme parks and provides memorable experiences to consumers. South West Airlines, classified as number eight in the Fortune classification of the world

Book excerpt: Pathways to Excellence suggests ways in which Zambia could liberate herself from mediocrity and become the world class economy it is meant to be. In addition to sensible prescriptions such as maximizing the efficacy of public spending, and creating conditions that support Zambian entrepreneurship, the author argues that the country's full potential cannot be realized until the ghost of colonialism is exorcised from the national psyche. Ways are suggested as to how Zambians can regain the confidence of their pre-colonial ancestors, and proceed to excellence ___________________________________________________ Chisanga Puta-Chekwe is uniquely placed to write about Zambia.
