Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the insights of Indigenous feminist legal theory, Emily Snyder examines representations of Cree law and gender in books, videos, graphic novels, educational websites, online lectures, and a video game. Although these resources promote the revitalization of Cree law and the principle of miyo-wîcêhtowin (good relations), Snyder argues that they do not capture the complexities of gendered power dynamics. The majority of the resources either erase women’s legal authority by not mentioning them, or they diminish women’s agency by portraying them primarily as mothers and nurturers. Although these latter roles are celebrated, Snyder argues that Cree laws and gender roles are represented in inflexible, aesthetically pleasing ways that overlook power imbalances and difficult questions regarding interpretations of tradition. What happens when good relations are represented in ways that are oppressive? Grappling with this question, Snyder makes the case that educators need to critically engage with issues of gender and power in order to create inclusive resources that meaningfully address the everyday messiness of law. As with all legal orders, gendered oppression can be perpetuated through Cree law, but Cree law is also a dynamic resource for challenging gendered oppression.

Book excerpt: Gifts from the Elders renews womanhood's legacy by opening women's circles to support girls growing into womanhood. With a focus on play and nature, women's circles will provide girls with tools for confidence and competence, the ingredients for self-esteem. By weaving women's circles with community building and relationship training girls will acquire mastery, generosity, and independence while they pirouette in the safety of women. When women form circles around girls, eight to eighteen and meet regularly, they will participate in the most ancient and rewarding legacy of women. Rites of Passage for girls need to be offered by women in every neighborhood around the country. Recovered as part of womanhood's heritage, initiation celebrations can eliminate a host of adolescent risks. We can learn from our native elders that adolescence is the special time in girls' development to create a strong foundation for the rest of their lives. When a secure network of women supports each girl, she can master nature skills and safely explore her developing mind, body, and spirit. Our legacy for womanhood can be re-created by encircling girls with playful mentors and a safe place to explore all of emergent facets within a backdrop of nature training.

Book excerpt: An in-depth, meticulously documented exploration of the ecological wisdom of Native Peoples from around the world Arranged thematically, Wisdom of the Elders contains sacred stories and traditions on the interrelationships between humans and the environment as well as perspectives from modern science, which more often than not validate the sacred, ancient Wisdom of the Elders. Native peoples and environments discussed range from the Inuit Arctic and the Native Americans of the Northwest coast, the Sioux of the Plains, and the Pueblo, Hopi, and Navajo of the Southwest to the Australian Outback, to the rich, fecund tropics of Africa, Malaysia, and the Amazon. “Our technological civilization is speeding toward a violent collision with nature, and we are threatening the ability of the Earth—our home—to support life as we know it. Suzuki and Knudtson’s extraordinary work powerfully reminds us that we are indeed one with the Earth. We are truly indebted to them for charting for us the course toward a healthy and sustaining relationship with our planet.”—Vice President Al Gore

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html “Inasmuch as you don't want to be stubborn, sail to Valaam, and if you don't want to be harsh, go to Sarov. If you want to be experienced, go to Optina,” Russian people used to say in the old days. And not without reason. Optina Desert raised in its monastery walls a whole galaxy of elders who were distinguished by the most valuable spiritual gift - the gift of reasoning. Not only ordinary people came to them for advice, but also the intelligentsia - great Russian writers and public figures: F.M. Dostoevsky, N.V. Gogol, L.N. Tolstoy, K.N. Leontiev, V.S. Soloviev. The elders, wise in spiritual experience, opened the will of God to those who were asking, consoled in difficult life trials, diverted them from sinful life and turned to repentance - sometimes strictly, and sometimes with a joke-joke. The advice and instructions of the elders, preserved in letters or spoken in conversations and recorded by eyewitnesses, are relevant at all times, and especially in ours, meager spiritual mentors. The teachings collected in this book are only a small part of the richest Optina treasury. Great and incomparably beautiful is the river of God - Holy Optina! This river flows from the sources of temporary life in the sea of eternally joyful endless life in the kingdom of the inexorable Light, and it bears on itself the boats and its desert inhabitants, and many other mournful, tortured, suffering souls who have found the truth of life at the feet of the great Optina elders. What miracles, what signs of the mercy of God, as well as his righteous anger, are not concealed in the transparent deep life-giving waters of this majestic, beautiful, mysteriously wonderful river! How many times from its picturesque bank, covered with a tent of lush green pines and firs, wrapped in the coolness of curly oaks, lace birches, aspens and maples of the reserved monastery forest, my seine descended into its bottomless depths, as clear as rock crystal, and -not in vain ... Oh, blessed Optina! S. A. Nilus If you do any mercy to anyone, you will be pardoned for that. If you suffer with a suffering person (it is not great, it seems, this is) - you are numbered as martyrs. If you forgive the offender, for this all your sins will be forgiven. Advice and guidance from Moses of Optina

This book invites readers to navigate a purposeful path from adulthood to elderhood with choice, curiosity, and courage. Everyone is getting old; not everyone is growing old. But the path of purposeful aging is accessible to all—and it's fundamental to health, happiness, and longevity. With a focus on growing whole through developing a sense of purpose in later life, Who Do You Want to Be When You Grow Old? celebrates the experience of aging with inspiring stories, real-world practices, and provocative questions. Framed by a long conversation between two old friends, the book reconceives aging as a liberating experience that enables us to become more authentically the person we always meant to be with each passing year. In their bestseller Repacking Your Bags, Richard J. Leider and David A. Shapiro defined the good life as “living in the place you belong, with people you love, doing the right work, on purpose.” This book builds on that definition to offer a purposeful path for living well while aging well.

We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth, the atrocities of war, the global scourge of poverty, the prevailing culture of materialism, the epidemics that threaten the health of the Earth’s peoples, and with the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We, the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, believe that our ancestral ways of prayer, peacemaking, and healing are vitally needed today. . . . We believe that the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. In some Native American societies, tribal leaders consulted a council of grandmothers before making any major decisions that would affect the whole community. What if we consulted our wise women elders about the problems facing our global community today? This book presents the insights and guidance of thirteen indigenous grandmothers from five continents, many of whom are living legends among their own peoples. The Grandmothers offer wisdom on such timely issues as nurturing our families; cultivating physical and mental health; and confronting violence, war, and poverty. Also included are the reflections of Western women elders, including Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem, Helena Norberg-Hodge, and Carol Moseley Brown.

Book excerpt: This book is a product of over ten years of work. It addresses intermarriage circles, transformations of customs, the rise and fall supernatural forces, power relations among gods, ghosts and people in “synchronic communities,” and tongxiangtongye (same hometown, same industry) economies based on rural sociocultural networks in the author’s native Sun Village in Putian. The author explores the details of microhistory by examining changes and continuities in everyday life to show the grand through the minute. This exciting book possesses important theoretical significance, including reflections on binary frameworks such as state vs. society and tradition vs. modernity or revolution, along with new arguments about commonly used concepts such as “the cultural nexus of power” and “the hollowing-out of the rural.”

Book excerpt: THE CIRCLE OF LIFE presents traditional oral Native American sacred teachings from the Iroquois, Lakota, and other traditions. The author has been receiving these teachings from elders since his youth. The wisdom embraces cosmology, ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, sociology, psychology, healing, dream interpretation, and more.Audlin calls himself neither a spiritual teacher nor an authority, but a conduit through which these oral traditions can be presented meaningfully to people in a modern world. He outlines universal principles common to many traditional peoples worldwide. The Red Road is available to all --regardless of religion or ethnicity -- willing to follow its paths. These paths, however, are often not easy and require deep personal and spiritual commitment. Audlin says in his introduction: "If this book serves any purpose, let it be to help us bring the Sacred Hoop of All the Nations back together again, so we and all that lives may stand as one in silent awe before that Great Mystery."
