But Lewis and Clark didn't know that. They took the wrong fork at Three Forks, Montana. They should have taken the Madison River, not the Jefferson. The Madison takes you south into the Snake River which is in Island Park, Idaho. The Snake is a wide, deep-flowing river that flows into the Columbia River-which was Lewis and Clark's destination in 1805. The book describes the unique country where these three states meet-Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. This area includes Yellowstone, the Tetons and Island Park. The headwaters of the Snake River starts at Big Springs, Idaho. That area was discovered by Andrew Henry and his trappers in 1810. How many Native Americans must have camped at that beautiful spot over the centuries? It was the trappers who opened up the West-after Lewis and Clark. They went everywhere! Then came the settlers, Mormons, miners, Mormon Battalions' road and the Mexican War ('46-48). Included is the early Spanish Southwest and California history. That's how the United States was born-in just 40 years-from 1806 to 1848, from the East to the West! It's amazing!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is the first world power to inhabit an immense land mass open at both ends to the world’s two largest oceans—the Atlantic and the Pacific. This gives America a great competitive advantage often overlooked by Atlanticists, whose focus remains overwhelmingly fixed on America’s relationship with Europe. Bruce Cumings challenges the Atlanticist perspective in this innovative new history, arguing that relations with Asia influenced our history greatly. Cumings chronicles how the movement westward, from the Middle West to the Pacific, has shaped America’s industrial, technological, military, and global rise to power. He unites domestic and international history, international relations, and political economy to demonstrate how technological change and sharp economic growth have created a truly bicoastal national economy that has led the world for more than a century. Cumings emphasizes the importance of American encounters with Mexico, the Philippines, and the nations of East Asia. The result is a wonderfully integrative history that advances a strong argument for a dual approach to American history incorporating both Atlanticist and Pacificist perspectives.

Book excerpt: The Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-1806 across America from Pittsburg to the Pacific and back was the third recorded transcontinental journey. President Jefferson had negotiated the Louisiana Purchase of over two million square kilometres from the French in 1803, and the aim of the expedition was to investigate the territory involved. He commissioned a Corps of Discovery as a scientific and military expedition to survey the acquisition, appointing his aide Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) to lead it. It was hoped to discover that the Missouri and other rivers could be used for transcontinental communication and transport, and to assess the natural resources of the area. Some of the party returned east with specimens, reports and a map, while the remainder reached the Pacific in December 1805. Volume 2 covers the journey from Three Forks, Montana, the source of the Missouri, to the Pacific, and their winter quarters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Thomas Jefferson sent a team of explorers to discover a way to the Pacific Ocean two hundred years ago, the western border of the United States was the Mississippi River. It was Jefferson's dream to uncover the mysteries of the distant lands beyond. In 1803, the president sent a team of thirty men, lead by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, up the Missouri River, across the Rocky Mountains, down the Columbia River to the Pacific, and back home again. During this monumental, two-and-a-half-year expedition, Lewis and Clark gathered samples of plants, animals, and Indian crafts. Into the Wilderness describes the difficult yet successful journey that made these men the celebrated heroes they are today. James J. Holmberg, curator of special collections at the Filson Historical Society, is the author of Dear Brother: Letters of William Clark to Jonathan Clark.
