Book excerpt: The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.

Book excerpt: I have been teaching courses on experimental techniques in nuclear and particle physics to master students in physics and in engineering for many years. This book grew out of the lecture notes I made for these students. The physics and engineering students have rather different expectations of what such a course should be like. I hope that I have nevertheless managed to write a book that can satisfy the needs of these different target audiences. The lectures themselves, of course, need to be adapted to the needs of each group of students. An engineering student will not qu- tion a statement like “the velocity of the electrons in atoms is ?1% of the velocity of light”, a physics student will. Regarding units, I have written factors h and c explicitly in all equations throughout the book. For physics students it would be preferable to use the convention that is common in physics and omit these constants in the equations, but that would probably be confusing for the engineering students. Physics students tend to be more interested in theoretical physics courses. However, physics is an experimental science and physics students should und- stand how experiments work, and be able to make experiments work. This is an open access book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Propagation of Gamma Quanta in Matter deals with various problems of the propagation and absorption of gamma quanta in matter, including the occurrence of multiple scattering of radiation. A general account of theoretical methods of solving problems of multiple scattering of quanta is presented, with emphasis on the results of solving such problems. This book consists of three chapters and begins with a discussion on the interaction of gamma radiation with matter; multiple scattering of gamma quanta; and the distribution function and quantities connected with it. The next chapter focuses on the theory of multiple scattering of gamma quanta and covers subjects such as the transport equation and its analytical solution; method of moments; method of random sampling; and method of successive collisions. The last chapter examines the propagation of radiation for various geometrical configurations of the sources and absorbing media, paying particular attention to a point source in a homogeneous medium and on the boundary of two media; unidirectional radiation in a homogeneous medium; reflexion of gamma radiation from the surface of a scattering medium; a plane isotropic source; and a thick radiating layer of an absorbing medium. This monograph will appeal to students as well as physicists and engineers engaged in shield design problems.

Book excerpt: Experimental Techniques in High-Energy Nuclear and Particle Physics is a compilation of outstanding technical papers and reviews of the ingenious methods developed for experimentation in modern nuclear and particle physics. This book, a second edition, provides a balanced view of the major tools and technical concepts currently in use, and elucidates the basic principles that underly the detection devices. Several of the articles in this volume have never been published, or have appeared in relatively inaccessible journals. Although the emphasis is on charged-particle tracking and calorimetry, general reviews of ionization detectors and Monte Carlo techniques are also included. This book serves as a compact source of reference for graduate students and experimenters in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, seeking information on some of the major ideas and techniques developed for modern experiments in these fields.

Book excerpt: Radioactive Investigations of Oil and Gas Wells: A Textbook focuses on the radioactive methods used in the investigations of oil and gas wells, including radioactivity, nuclear reactions, and tracer method. The book first offers information on physical principles of the radiometry of wells and radioactive properties of rocks. Discussions focus on artificial transformation of elements and nuclear reactions; radioactivity and the law of radioactive disintegration; natural radioactivity; and induced radioactivity of rocks. The text then ponders on the methods of well geometry and radiometric apparatus. The publication examines the interpretation of results of measurements by the natural radioactivity method and working technique and interpretation of diagrams of the tracer method. Topics include selection of the radioactive isotope and technology of preparation of activated fluid and determination of absorbing strata and of communication between the strata outside the tubing in production wells and pressurized wells. The text is a dependable reference for readers interested in the radioactive methods used in the investigations of oil and gas wells.

Book excerpt: This book presents more than 300 exercises, with guided solutions, on topics that span both the experimental and the theoretical aspects of particle physics. The exercises are organized by subject, covering kinematics, interactions of particles with matter, particle detectors, hadrons and resonances, electroweak interactions and flavor physics, statistics and data analysis, and accelerators and beam dynamics. Some 200 of the exercises, including 50 in multiple-choice format, derive from exams set by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Research (INFN) over the past decade to select its scientific staff of experimental researchers. The remainder comprise problems taken from the undergraduate classes at ETH Zurich or inspired by classic textbooks. Whenever appropriate, in-depth information is provided on the source of the problem, and readers will also benefit from the inclusion of bibliographic details and short dissertations on particular topics. This book is an ideal complement to textbooks on experimental and theoretical particle physics and will enable students to evaluate their knowledge and preparedness for exams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the traditional concept of nuclear medicine, this textbook presents cutting-edge concepts of hybrid imaging and discusses the close interactions between nuclear medicine and other clinical specialties, in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. Today the diagnostic applications of nuclear medicine are no longer stand-alone procedures, separate from other diagnostic imaging modalities. This is especially true for hybrid imaging guided interventional radiology or surgical procedures. Accordingly, today’s nuclear medicine specialists are actually specialists in multimodality imaging (in addition to their expertise in the diagnostic and therapeutic uses of radionuclides). This new role requires a new core curriculum for training nuclear medicine specialists. This textbook is designed to meet these new educational needs, and to prepare nuclear physicians and technologists for careers in this exciting specialty.
