Book excerpt: Tadema Gallery was founded in 1978 by Sonya and David Newell-Smith in London's famed Camden Passage in Islington. They were successful photojournalists who ventured into the field of twentieth-century abstract art and the decorative arts of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By 1982 they had discovered a passion for artist-designed jewelry and showed in the gallery an eclectic choice of jewels from significant designers of the Revivalist, Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, Jugendstil, Art Deco, and Modernist movements. With over 500 unique jewelry pieces from the 1860s to 1960s, the book reflects the forty-year history of the gallery and the superb eye of its inspirational founders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential guide continues Duncan's survey of this key period with a study of both orfevrerie - the objects d'arts created by gold and silversmiths - and metalware. At this point in history, the distinction between the fine and decorative arts began to weaken, resulting in exquisite enamelling by such luminaries as Lalique, brilliantly fashioned household accoutrements of bronze and wrought iron and a flourishing of sculpture. Over 2,000 illustrations beautifully document these important pieces.

Book excerpt: The extraordinary fecundity of the photographic medium between the first and second world wars can be persuasively attributed to the dynamic circulation of people, of ideas, of images, and of objects that was a hallmark of that era in Europe and the United States. Voluntary and involuntary migration, a profusion of publications distributed and read on both sides of the Atlantic, and landmark exhibitions that brought artistic achievements into dialogue with one another all contributed to a period of innovation that was a creative peak both in the history of photography and in the field of arts and letters. Few, if any, collections of photography capture the imaginative spirit of this moment as convincingly as the Thomas Walther Collection at The Museum of Modern Art.0This volume represents an important chapter in the rich and complex lives of these works, providing ample evidence of the brilliance of the photographers practicing on both sides of the Atlantic in the interwar period.00Exhibition: Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland (25.04-01.08.2021) / Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (14.09.2021-30.01.2022) / CAMERA, Turin, Italy (03-06.2022).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OBJECT:PHOTO shifts the dialogue about modernist photography from an emphasis on the subject and the image to the actual photographic object, created by a certain artist at a particular time and present today in its unique physicality. This shift is especially significant for a study of the period during which photography developed a distinctive formal language. A growing awareness of the rarity of images made between the two world wars has altered historians' considerations, encouraging new approaches privileging the originality of each work and the density of references each contains. This richly illustrated publication culminates a four-year collaborative research endeavor between The Museum of Modern Art's Departments of Photography and Conservation, and nearly 30 visiting scholars, on the material and aesthetic evolution of avant-garde photography in the early twentieth century. The 341 modernist photographs known as The Thomas Walther Collection, a major museum acquisition made in 2001, is presented in its entirety, establishing a new standard of depth for the medium. Essays by curators, researchers, and conservators consider the history of collecting from this era to the present and how deepening knowledge has shifted the perspective on the medium; the material facts of the Walther pictures as a baseline for understanding the development of photographic materials in this era; and how the intellectual formation of the writers of critical photographic publications of the era and the societal and cultural pressures of that historical moment inflected the photography's sense of its own history. Together with thematic, object-based case studies of groups of pictures that demonstrate new approaches in specific, divergent examples, these contributions reanimate the dialogue on this formative era in photography.

Book excerpt: Once the State-run Salon in Paris closed, an array of independent Salons mushroomed starting with the French Artists Salon and Womenâ (TM)s Salon in 1881 followed by the Independent Artistsâ (TM) Salon, National Salon of Fine Arts and Autumn Salon. Offering an unparalleled choice of art identities and alliances, together with undreamed-of opportunities for sales, commissions, prizes and art criticism, these great Salons guaranteed the centripetal and centrifugal power of Paris as the â oemodern art centreâ . Lured by the prospect of being exhibited annually in Salons the size of Biennales today, a huge number and national diversity of artists, from the Australian Rupert Bunny to the Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, flocked to Paris. Yet by no means were these Salons equal in power, nor did they work consensually to forge this â oemodern art centreâ . Formed on the basis of their different cultural politics, constantly they rivalled one another for State acquisitions and commissions, exhibition places and spaces, awards, and every other means of enhancing their legitimacy. By no means were the avant-garde salons those that most succeeded. Instead, as this culturo-political history demonstrates, the French Artistsâ (TM) and National Fine Art Salons were the most successful, with the genderist French Artists' Salon being the most powerful and â oeofficialâ . Despite the renown today of Neo-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Fauvism, Cubism and Orphism, the most powerful artists in this â oemodern art centreâ were not Sonia Delaunay, Ã0/00mile GallÃ(c), Paul Signac, Henri Matisse or even Picasso but such Academicians as LÃ(c)on Bonnat, William Bouguereau, Fernand Cormon, Edouard Detaille, Gabriel Ferrier, Jean-Paul Laurens, Luc-Oliver Merson and AimÃ(c) Morot, who exhibited at the â oeofficialâ Salon supported by the machinery of the State. In its exposure of the rivalry, conflict and struggle between the Salons and their artists, this is an unprecedented history of dissension. It also exposes how, just below the welcoming internationalist veneer of this â oemodern art centreâ , intense persecutionist paranoia lay festering. Whenever Franceâ (TM)s â oecivilizing missionâ seemed culturally, commercially or colonially threatened, it erupted in waves of nationalist xenophobia turning artistic rivalry into bitter enmity. In exposing how rivals became transmuted into conspirators, ultimately this book reveals a paradox resonant in histories that celebrate the international triumph of French modern art: that this magnetic â oecentreâ , which began by welcoming international modernists, ended by attacking them for undermining its cultural supremacy, contaminating its â oecivilizing missionâ and politically persecuting the very modernist culture for which it has received historical renown.
