Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: B+ (79%), Bishop's University Lennoxville, language: English, abstract: The Pardoner’s Prologue and Tale by Geoffrey Chaucer can be seen as an outstanding example of a jape. The shrewd Pardoner thinks he is able to play a game of confidence with the other pilgrims. According to the Middle English Dictionary, the noun “japerie” can also contain the meaning of irony, which is also true for the Prologue and the Tale. At the heart of the definition of irony lies incongruity or contradiction. The Oxford English Dictionary defines irony as: firstly, “[a] figure of speech in which the intended meaning is the opposite of that expressed by the words used; .... [secondly a] condition of affairs or events of a character opposite to what was, or might naturally be, expected; a contradictory outcome of events as if in mockery of the promise and fitness of things (87). The Pardoner’s Prologue and the Pardoner’s Tale provide many facets illustrating ironic contradiction. Particularly interesting is to analyze the Pardoner himself, as he is definitely contradictory in his behaviour as well as in his statements. An analysis of the Pardoner’s presentation in his Prologue reveals the contradictions and the irony in the exemplum he chooses for his tale. The exemplum’s characters and actions not only mirror the ambiguous and complex character of the Pardoner, but also contain several instances of irony. Based on that, one can see how the Pardoner’s leitmotif, “Radix malorum est Cupiditas” (l. 334) unifies the ironic contradictions of the Prologue and of the Tale.

Book excerpt: The Canterbury Tales recounts the stories told by pilgrims to one another as they make their way from London to the shrine of St. Thomas Beckett in Canterbury. This volume contains the Pardoner's Tale - a story rich in detail about the exploitation of ordinary folk in medieval times at the hands of men of religion. The odd-numbered pages contain Chaucer's original text written in Middle English. Alongside, there is room in the wide margins to make translation notes of The Pardoner's Tale, or perhaps, to define unfamiliar key words. The reverse, even-numbered pages contain a new translation into modern English. The translation into modern English differs only slightly from those found elsewhere. Here, the key difference is that each line is translated separately, and thereby avoids the problem seen in some translations that words are borrowed from adjacent lines to help maintain Chaucer'srhyming structure. Accordingly, this translation adheres more closely to Chaucer's own words; although, in doing so, it may occasionallycontain rather more descriptive explanations than is usual in translated works. Nevertheless, this 'word for word' approach will greatly assistthose new to Chaucer's middle English. This volume contains the complete and unabridged text (with line numbers), a helpful translation and a personal study notebook - which means it offers excellent value for money.

This interlinear edition places Chaucer's original middle English text in alternating rows with a new translation into modern English. This allows readers to understand unfamiliar words and phrases immediately, and without needing to look elsewhere. Alongside, there is room in thewide outer margins for readers to write their own notes, define unfamiliar words, or perhaps, to consider alternative constructions. The translation into modern English differs only slightly from those found elsewhere. Here, the key difference is that each line is translated separately, and thereby avoids the problem seen in some translations that words are borrowed from adjacent lines to help maintain Chaucer'srhyming structure. Nevertheless, this 'word for word' approach will greatly assist those new to Chaucer's middle English.Parents will be pleased that The Pardoner's Tale contains no lewdness or vulgarity as can be found in some of the other Canterbury Tales. In this regard, it may appropriately be studied at Middle School level. This volume contains the complete and unabridged text (with line numbers), a helpful translation and a personal study notebook - which means it offers excellent value for money.
