Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parable of the Prodigal Son, or From Heaven to Hell and Return We have tried to show the reader that Heaven is a creation of the God of the universe, or, in other words, the Conscious God, and the world is only a. House divided against itself, and a creation of the uncon scious god in man to awaken the truth within and bring out the consciousness. What the Conscious (lod created is real and endures forever, and cannot be forgotten when once known; but the world of belief, or death, is only another name for unconscious ness. Being dead in the sense of unconsciousness does not mean that you cannot believe that you move and have life, for if you did not believe that the world of belief was real, it) would not accomplish that for which it was created, namely, the awakening of the consciousness of life within, where all knowledge dwells. When we say within we include the whole universe, which has no limitations, for man is in the image and likeness of (lod, and (10d means everything that is: so the world is onlv belief, because it will consume itself and pass away. When we sav belief we mean anything that man created and calls by one name or another, because they are all self con suming if you only will give them time enough therefore, such cannot be knowledge or created by God, for all things that God created are eternal, always were and always will be, without beginning or ending. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OVER TWO MILLION COPIES SOLD! It's the most powerful force in the universe, our only hope for love and forgiveness, and a foretaste of eternal life: amazing, radical, life-changing grace. Millions of lives have been changed by award-winning author Philip Yancey's startling exploration of grace at street level. Grace is the one thing the world can't duplicate, the healing force we need, and the key to transforming a broken world. In this revised and updated edition of his personal and provocative book, Yancey offers true portraits of grace's life-changing power. These stories, set in the midst of life's stark realities, evoke such questions as: If grace is God's love for the undeserving, how do I get it? How well are we dispensing grace to a world that knows far more of strife and unforgiveness than it does of mercy? Can grace make a difference in the midst of such atrocities as the Nazi holocaust, and how can it withstand the brutality of hate? With powerful stories, rich theology, and practical suggestions, Yancey challenges us to become living answers to a world that desperately needs to know, What's So Amazing About Grace?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, this classic work is essential reading for all who ask, “Where has my struggle led me?” A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. Here he shares the deeply personal and resonant meditation that led him to discover the place within where God has chosen to dwell. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt’s painting in light of his own life journey, he evokes a powerful drama of the classic parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son’s return, the father’s restoration of sonship, the elder son’s resentfulness, and the father’s compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as God’s beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and is here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The personal testimony of a 21st Century Prodigal. His days in the ‘far country’, his Redemption, Restoration and the Problems he encountered from the ‘older brothers’ in the house. One fateful Wednesday morning, the story hit me with such a powerful force that I was speechless for some moments! I had read the story of the prodigal son in the Bible many times before but the story never ministered to me the way it did on this Wednesday morning. All of a sudden, it was as if a switch had been turned on in my head and the story took a whole new line of meaning in my life. The Holy Spirit began to show me that this is the story of my life. The grace extended to the prodigal son in the story is the same type of grace I have received from God and this is the message that the Holy Spirit wants me to testify to: that is, the unlimited grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to the lost, the wayward, the incorrigible and the damned. The Lord stands ready to show His divine favor and grace on all who would dare to return from the wilderness. He dares us to return to Him and see whether He really is just and faithful to forgive us all our iniquities as He promised through His prophets

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the parable "The Prodigal Son" attributed to Jesus by the Synoptic Gospel writer Luke - a father has two sons. The word prodigal means "wastefully extravagant"), becomes destitute and he dies and is reanimated. He makes his way home expecting his his father is likely to no longer recognize him. The father welcomes him back and celebrates his return. The older son refuses to participate. The father reminds the older son that he should still celebrate the return of the younger son because he was 'dead' and is now found.A portion of this parable deals with death and reconstitution, specifically the 32nd verse of Luke 15. The Vulgate translation of the highlighted text from the Koine Greek is: "quia frater tuus hic mortuus erat et revixit." This is best translated into modern English as "because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again". English substitutions might also render this as; deceased, departed or passed on. If the meaning was that the prodigal was lost, removed, detached, parted from or estranged - the appropriate Koine or Latin word would have been employed, rather than 'dead'. This distinction is paramount to the meaning of the parable as Christ intended it to be understood. Death is death - but victory over death is possible, and integration into the community [family] is also possible. As with the Elias-John the Baptist transmigration acknowledgement of Jesus - this parable deals on several levels with death, reanimation, recognition and reconciliation. It also chastises the hubris of the older son who clings to avarice and the Mosaic law at the expense of mercy.

Book excerpt: Over half of Americans believe in a literal heaven, in a literal hell. Most people who hold these beliefs are Christian and assume they are the age-old teachings of the Bible. Ehrman shows that eternal rewards and punishments are found nowhere in the Old Testament, and are not what Jesus or his disciples taught. He recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. Ehrman shows that competing views were intimately connected with the social, cultural, and historical worlds out of which they emerged. -- adapted from jacket
