Book excerpt: It all began before the turn of the twentieth century when Pancho Villa and his faithful lieutenant Leonardo Regaldo took by force of arms a massive treasure stolen from the Mexican people by the despot dictator Porfirio. In the mid 1980’s, the search and recovery of this treasure was to become a contest of wills between the direct descendants of Leonardo and Porfirio. Carl Webb and Jack Morgan get unwittingly entangled in this conflict and a simple treasure hunt soon becomes a deadly contest between the opposing forces. It was in the remote reaches of the Guadalupe Mountains of New Mexico where the two groups fought it out with no quarter given on either side. Will Carl Webb and Jack Morgan survive this military assault? Earlier the two adventurers had endured an attempt by pirates to commandeer the Motor-Sailor yacht Freeman Barnes off the coast of California. Carl and Jack prevailed then but this is now and they have a far more dedicated enemy who is both clever and resourceful.

This book explores and examines twenty-one of the Old West's most baffling mysteries, which lure the curious and beg for investigation even though their solutions have eluded experts for decades. Many relate to the death or disappearance of some of the best-known lawmen and outlaws in history, such as Billy the Kid, Buckskin Frank Leslie, John Wilkes Booth, The Catalina Kid, and Butch Cassidy. Others involve mysterious tales and legends of lost mines and buried treasures that have not been recovered—yet.

Book excerpt: Track pirate gold and misplaced riches across 168 counties in this comprehensive guide to the lost treasures of Texas. Countless fortunes have disappeared into the vast expanse of the Lone Star State. The history of the coast is cluttered with shipwrecks like that of the 1554 Spanish fleet. Even when pirates such as Jean Laffite managed to get their ill-gotten gains ashore, their loot vanished just as completely as if it had sunk beneath the waves. Entire mines, including the ventures of Jim Bowie and San Saba Presidio, have been reclaimed by the earth. The unmarked caches of bandits like Jesse James and Pancho Villa still bedevil the dreams of treasure seekers today. W. Craig Gaines reveals what has been lost, what has been found and what remains to be recovered.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cock of the Walk, Qui-Qui-Ri-Qui!: The Legend of Pancho VillaPancho Villa has dominated my literary interest from the year 1935, when I moved from New York to Alpine, Texas. In Alpine, El Paso, Presidio, and other Texas Mexico border towns I heard so many stirring tales about him that I visited shortly, in that same year, a few cities in Mexico, such as Chihuahua, Juarez, and Ojinaga. Again, in 1939, I traveled through the same border country. Much later, at El Paso in 1946 and thereafter, I interviewed peo ple and Visited battle scenes in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, and traveled in the interior of Mexico to Mexico City itself, visiting such other famous historical sites as Parral and Torreon.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alongside Moctezuma and Benito Juárez, Pancho Villa is probably the best-known figure in Mexican history. Villa legends pervade not only Mexico but the United States and beyond, existing not only in the popular mind and tradition but in ballads and movies. There are legends of Villa the Robin Hood, Villa the womanizer, and Villa as the only foreigner who has attacked the mainland of the United States since the War of 1812 and gotten away with it. Whether exaggerated or true to life, these legends have resulted in Pancho Villa the leader obscuring his revolutionary movement, and the myth in turn obscuring the leader. Based on decades of research in the archives of seven countries, this definitive study of Villa aims to separate myth from history. So much attention has focused on Villa himself that the characteristics of his movement, which is unique in Latin American history and in some ways unique among twentieth-century revolutions, have been forgotten or neglected. Villa’s División del Norte was probably the largest revolutionary army that Latin America ever produced. Moreover, this was one of the few revolutionary movements with which a U.S. administration attempted, not only to come to terms, but even to forge an alliance. In contrast to Lenin, Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Fidel Castro, Villa came from the lower classes of society, had little education, and organized no political party. The first part of the book deals with Villa’s early life as an outlaw and his emergence as a secondary leader of the Mexican Revolution, and also discusses the special conditions that transformed the state of Chihuahua into a leading center of revolution. In the second part, beginning in 1913, Villa emerges as a national leader. The author analyzes the nature of his revolutionary movement and the impact of Villismo as an ideology and as a social movement. The third part of the book deals with the years 1915 to 1920: Villa’s guerrilla warfare, his attack on Columbus, New Mexico, and his subsequent decline. The last part describes Villa’s surrender, his brief life as a hacendado, his assassination and its aftermath, and the evolution of the Villa legend. The book concludes with an assessment of Villa’s personality and the character and impact of his movement.
