Book excerpt: Is Jewish education simply an ancient and archaic type of socialization into "customs and ceremonies" or a sophisticated practice, based on rich cultural conceptions of the educated individual, the decent society and the relationship of knowledge and virtue? This author, rather than offering a dry analysis, takes the reader on a leisurely yet careful excursion into the world of Jewish tradition in order to discover models of the educated human being within it. In the process, the reader discovers dialogues between Western philosophy and Talmudic Midrash and is offered a fresh view of culture, faith and identity.
Book Synopsis Reading Fear in Flavian Epic by : Dalida Agri
Download or read book Reading Fear in Flavian Epic written by Dalida Agri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the textual representations of emotions, fear in particular, through the lens of Stoic thought and their impact on depictions of power, gender, and agency. It first draws attention to the role and significance of fear, and cognate emotions, in the tyrant's psyche, and then goes on to explore how these emotions, in turn, shape the wider narratives. The focus is on the lengthy epics of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Statius' Thebaid, and Silius Italicus' Punica. All three poems are obsessed with men in power with no power over themselves, a marked concern that carries a strong Senecan fingerprint. Seneca's influence on post-Neronian epic can be felt beyond his plays. His Epistles and other prose works prove particularly illuminating for each of the poet's gendered treatment of the relationship between power and emotion. By adopting a Roman Stoic perspective, both philosophical and cultural, this study brings together a cluster of major ideas to draw meaningful connections and unlock new readings.

Download or read book Ashes ... written by Stefan Żeromski and published by . This book was released on 1928 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shows the unsightly side of the Habsburg Empire. It is a declaration of disagreement with idealization of the Austrian partition and the model of state management used in its territory. From the postcolonial point of view, it is a novel about people and territories forced, in spite of bloody resistance, to become the periphery of an empire. The Old Republic of Poland was not a glorious metropolis, but it was still a metropolis. Colonization transformed and divided this metropolis into provinces of three empires, with all the consequences that a transformation of this kind brings. The so-called Polish Sarmatism, from which the heroes of Ashes derive endowed citizens of "Sarmatian" Poland with a sense of self-worth and liberty. Austrian colonization destroyed their liberty and compelled the Poles to serve the interests of their conquerors. Ashes is a narrative of the Sarmatian culture that survived among the nobility with pedigrees and estates, and was also potentially present among smallholders with no pedigree and no assets. The novel suggests that it is not necessary to be a noble to possess the sense of liberty that the Republic of Poland developed and cultivated.

Book excerpt: This book, which draws on the principles and practices of philosophy, is packed full of sound, concrete advice and guidance from the wise of both East and West. It shows us how to become free of fear--that tyrant of the soul by living more from the Self than the ego. Dr. Costello details the dynamics of fear from the perspective of Advaita Vedanta--its forms and figures--before presenting the nine fundamental fears with the help of the Enneagram system. There are Stoic strategies for facing fears, existential exercises, and recommended daily practices. Dr. Costello writes as both a philosopher and clinician and brings to this fascinating subject, in which we're all implicated, his erudition in both theory and therapy. The work complements his online course hosted by Udemy, "Therapy Technique for Anxiety, Phobias, & OCD," which highlights the importance of "paradoxical intention," derived from Viktor Frankl's school of philosophical psychology.
