Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painters of Barbizon Millet Rousseau Diaz Of the career Of a group Of painters, to whom is generally attributed the development in Landscape in the great change that has lately taken place in the canons Of French Art, which is described by some writers on the subject as the ivictory' Of the Romantic School over Classicism. The practical nineteenth-century standard Of the success Of this group is the enormous money value of their work in the international market, and the history that has to be told is as much a commercial as an aesthetic development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Barbizon School of Painters: Corot, Rousseau, Diaz, Millet, Daubigny, Etc The pictures painted by the group of French artists who lived around Ban, bizon, have been for many years the admiration of the artistic world. But very little has yet been done to tell their story, and it is the aim of this volume to set forth the biographies of these artists, illustrated with such representa tions of their works as will give an adequate conception of their methods and achievements. Personal knowledge of these artists I have had none, and for this reason it has been possible, perhaps, to take a less partial view than those writers nearly all Frenchmen - who have written articles, pamphlets, or monographs on the artists, which have been chiefly eulogies, and at the best have either been brief or unsatisfactory. To those who have not yet felt the influence of the painters of the Barbizon School, the claim of impartiality may appear, in certain instances, somewhat questionable, but I have carefully avoided ex treme commendation, and the praise accorded is believed in every case to be fully deserved. Though they were often ridiculed or ignored by their contemporaries, their paintings are now revered around the world. Their dazzling works are familiar to even the most casual art lovers—but how well do we know the Impressionists as people? The first book to offer an intimate and lively biography of the world’s most popular group of artists, including Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne, Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Morisot, and Cassatt. Sue Roe’s Private Lives of the Impressionists, follows an extraordinary group of artists into their Paris studios, down the rural lanes of Montmartre, and into the rowdy riverside bars of a city undergoing monumental change. Vivid and deeply researched, it casts a brilliant light on this unparalleled society of genius colleagues who lived and worked together for twenty years—and transformed the art world with their breathtaking depictions of ordinary life.

Download or read book In the Forest of Fontainebleau written by Kimberly A. Jones and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100 works by artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), Théodore Rousseau (1812-1867), Jean-François Millet (1814-1875), Claude Monet (1840-1926), Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884), and Eugène Cuvelier (1837-1900) explore the French phenomenon of plein-air (open-air) painting and photography in the region of Fontainebleau, a pilgrimage site for aspiring landscape artists. The forest also inspired a new school of landscape photography, as figures such as Gustave Le Gray and Eugène Cuvelier, working side by side with painters, explored the camera's potential to reveal nature in a fresh and unadorned manner. The exhibition also includes 19th-century artists' equipment and tourist ephemera.
